The ice bucket challenge has existed for a while and has been a way for people to donate for random charities of their choice. It was a sports man (don't remember the name) who was diagnosed with ALS who went ahead and nominated people to take the challenge and it spread like wildfire from there. Glad they are raising so much money for ALS! However, I do think people can move onto other causes now. There's a million other areas that need money (even a fraction of what ALS raised).
I agree that it is great that people are participating in the ice bucket challenge to bring awareness to ALS. However, I feel the walk you mentioned or other alternatives would be better. California is in a very severe drought this year :(
But Jovita I think it's more about spreading awareness about ALS so that more people donate towards the R&D of cure for this disease but unfortunately it's more about the "Challenge" itself than any charity for many folks out there but not to forget all those who donated & did spread awareness....thanks to you too for doing the same Cheers :)
I am so with you on this one. People who crib about it and all this bull about wasting water ...Will they skip a couple of showers to save water ? I bet the ice bucket challenge takes up less water than that.. You tell em girl xxx
So, I can't reply to your comment, probably coz I don't have google plus, but his name is Pete Frates. The video is flooding fb, I'm sure you'll find it easily. It's called The story behind the ALS ice bucket challenge.
The feeling of numbness because of ice cold water is similar to the feeling once ALS progresses.. hence, this challenge/campaign was founded.. Grt video! Few posts on fb doing rounds about wastage of water vs shortage in Africa! Ridiculous!
I echo what was previously said. For one people are just throwing water without talking about the disease and two there is a SEVERE drought in California USA. I'm also seeing it used to promote businesses...which is low in my opinion. Learning about the disease SHOULDN'T be boring. I would rather learn than throw away precious resources! If it bores you then I'm sorry someone's life and pain isn't important to you!
I like the idea of this challenge, to raise funds and awarness, but I don't like the method chosen. There are some pobable negatives to this challenge. 1.) Yes, it waste water - But us 1st world citizens have been doing that for ages. 2.) Racist connotations? - Because throwing buckets of ice cold water was a common assult towards blacks in America's past some people now view this challenge as offensive. 3.) Fatalities - There have been reports of some people dying or getting sick, due to hypothermia, from pooring gallons of ice cold water onto themselves. 4.) It's just a fad - will people continue to support this cause or is it gonna die down in a month or two. And are we litaraly passing the buck with this cause? Some people choosing to just poor buckets of water on them selves instead of donating money. This writer seems to think so: www.vice.com/read/dumping-a-bucket-of-ice-on-your-head-does-not-make-you-a-philanthropist-813 5.) Distraction from other current and quite important matters - Not that helping this cause isnt important but is it hogging attention from other activisms? Hear"s an article that further expresses this: jezebel.com/whitewashing-and-the-problem-with-the-ice-bucket-challe-1629034733 6.) Taking a utilitarian view: Is it really one of the most imminent health issues to focus massively on. I know that's a cold question to ask but it does hold some importance. One journalist poses this question here: www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/better-ice-bucket-challenge
I'm sorry but I disagree. Don't take me the wrong way, its just my personal opinion. The ASL ice bucket challenge did raise awareness about a certain cause. But its taking away awareness about another issue. Its great to raise awareness about a certain issue through something interesting, but taking away awareness from one issue to raise awareness about another isn't helping the world. 2000 people die each day because they don't get clean water. 2.2 million people die a year because they don't get clean water. I'm not saying that they shouldn't raise awareness about ASL. Off course they should. Every life is valuable. But there are better ways to do it. Are you telling me people can't think of other fun ideas to raise awareness apart from wasting water? And no, not through boring things like documentaries and stuffs. But they could of done thousand of other things than waste water. For example, cut a little piece of your hair, or dress up as clown, or whatever (these are just examples and ideas). There could have been tonnes of ideas to raise awareness. Please don't feel offended. I really like your videos but this is just my opinion on this particular cause.
