A candid behind-the-scenes look at William Shatner and his American Saddlebreds. We visited Shatner's Belle Reve Farm near Lexington, KY and shot scenes of Shatner working with his horses. The feature ends with the World Championship competition between the legendary stallion, Ch. Skywatch and gelding Ch. Imperator in a head-to-head competition at Freedom Hall.

Me too and have owned them since the early 70's. My first was a gelding called Manner's Special Assignment by the stallion Modern Manners. I gaited him and showed in the 5 gaited classes, but he was calm enough for kids to show and at one show he won all 5 classed he was entered in with a 13 year old girl riding. They are no longer the versatile horse they were back then. The same could be said for the TWH and I hate what they are like now.

Saddlebreds usually have the tendon in their tail cut so it can be carried unnaturally high, and must wear a tail set harness in their stalls. Their hooves are allowed to grow very long, and many wear heavy shoes. Many are trained with chains or wood rattles around their fetlocks. Lighter fluid was sometimes used on hoof bottoms to enhance leg action. They are a beautiful breed naturally, no cruel, unatural enhancement needed.

You and others need to open your eyes and actually go to a Saddlebred show and see that most of what a Good or Great Saddlebred does so Naturally and Effortlessly without the need of abuse or artificial applications Etc.... Look at the beautiful dark filly with the 4 white socks that is being presented at 24.20. She moves naturally with high elevation, with a natural, floating tail and without the painful long steel leverages in her mouth you use in competition. Both the seller and the buyer agree that she is pretty and elegant. What do you want more !!! Can't you be satisfied with the horse as it was created by our Creator??? God made the horse a social animal that needs contact with other horses. He gave it not the speech but the language of the body. A normal tail of some length that can move naturally is what God has given to the horse. Please abolish those ridiculous, mutilated tails we see at competitions. Install a regulation that makes competitors equal in this. Please be kind to the animal and try to see and to show God's creation as He meant it to be. God bless you.

You talked about the bit, and Shatner explained that the bit is for light hands, and trained hands, but if used by someone not trained properly it can be bad. Also, you said do you want more? Well, look at people on stage who use hair extensions and crazy high heels and go to the extreme to put on a performance. That's what people do to put on a show to wow the audience. The horse is putting on a performance in the show ring to please the audience. There are officials at the shows to make sure people abide by rules and protect the horse at all times. These horses are pampered and loved more than you can imagine. People will not go to a show and watch a horse that looks like a horse in a pasture. They can ride down the road and see horses in a pasture all day long. Show horses do have contact with other horses. After all, Singers and performers don't have contact with other people while getting ready for their show.

And please never ride horses at the age of 2, you can wait 4 or 5 years when they're fully formed, patients is a virtue after all. Cuz you could cause them to have issues earlier on in life if you put too much stress on 'em when they're young. Riding at age 2 just reminds me of the awful racing industry.
