Altair is the brightest star of the constellation Aquila, which gives it the alpha designation. Altair is unique in the sense that it rotates quickly -- every 9 hours -- which gives the star an oblate spherical shape. It is fairly close to our own solar system at 16.7 light-years away, which is why it is bright in our sky. Learn more about the spectral class and shape of this beautiful star.

I’ve been kind of binge-watching this wonderful series on constellations, and I have to express my gratitude for all the work and passion you put into it. I started stargazing only recently (it’s a new passion of mine!) and I’ve found these videos so informative and enjoyable! Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge and passion with us. Happy stargazing!

Thank you Janine , I love astronomy I have hand drawn the 88 constellations and written summaries on all of the star's in each of them , also showing the NGC,s and Messier objects it has taken along time but I do enjoy studying the whole subject, the reason for this obsession my mine is I think its the way to learn the sky.I think your channel is very educational.

I'm glad you enjoy studying the sky. I never get tired of it. There is always something new to learn. The Messier Objects are really fun to learn about about. I definitely have a few favorites...I love Messier 45 (Pleiades) and Messier 31 (Andromeda Galaxy). Thank you for your support! 🌟

Vega and Altair: The Love-Crossed Stars Chinese mythology Through the varying shapes of the delicate clouds The sad message of the shooting stars A silent journey across the Milky Way One meeting of the Cowherd and the Weaver Amidst the golden autumn wind And jade-glistening dew Eclipses the countless meetings In the mundane world The feelings soft as water The ecstatic moment unreal is a dream How can one have the heart To go back on the bridge made of magpies If the two hearts are united forever Why do the two persons need to stay together Day after day, Night after night Qin Guan, Song dyn, 11th C.

Where in the night sky? north, south, east, west? This would be useful. It is difficult to see any stars here in summer not because of light pollution but because of midnight twilight(even at 55 degrees north). Only the very brightness stars are visible. It never truly gets completely dark.

I have a question... Did the rough math for "AU distance in a light-year"... got 64,516 AU. That right? Anyone? 93 million miles in AU... 6 trillion miles in a light-year.
@learnthesky
@learnthesky 4 года назад
You are very close. There are approximately 63,242 astronomical units in one light year.

Do you have a recommendation for an android app to use for viewing constellations? I am using the basic Google skylight I believe its not very accurate at times. Any ideas?? I hope to get a telescope one day!
@learnthesky
@learnthesky Год назад
Hello! 👋 The app I would recommend is Stellarium. I use this the most when I teach my students in the classroom. I do not often use an app when I'm outside on my phone because the giant sky does not always translate well onto a very tiny screen. I usually use my computer instead before I go out. I hope this helps. 🌟

there are asterisms for certain constellations that look very similar and it can be confusing which constellation we are looking at.. maybe you could do a series of comparison between the shape and location for similar looking but different asterisms!
@learnthesky

Can i ask, can there be 2 or even 3 altair stars because i read that stars are usually formed in groups meaning that there is a possibility of being multiple altair or even vega stars that can exist 😮
@learnthesky
@learnthesky 27 дней назад
Yes, multiple star systems exist. But the two you mentioned, Altair and Vega, are single star systems.

@@learnthesky so there's no 2 Vegas or altaïr's But there could be a possibility though right?
