Astral and NRS (not anymore?) make great river shoes, I step away from the mainstream and try some other brands you maybe have never heard of. Trying to find the ultimate river shoe!
My main criteria for a shoe that I would confidently wear running any river has to have the best traction, good ankle support, and hopefully last at least a season or more.
I've been trying out a shoe that i've never seen on the river before, the Altama OTB Maritime Assault Boot Mid Cut, since April 2022. I can claim over 40 days in the river with these shoes over the last few months and have come to a conclusion that they check at least two of the three boxes I want. But I really need something that can check all three, so I tried some other uncommon shoes. Eventually I (and my wallet) decided it was time to get the best of the best.
Hope you find this information useful, If you have river shoes you think are great leave a comment and maybe i'll try them out too!
Stay tuned for future review of the Hydro-Lace and other gear.

Those of us wearing Altama for the intended purpose like them alot. They where not made for walking in the places you tried to apply them. They do evacuate water quickly and help speed up drying while worn.

That sucks about the Altama, was just about to pull the trigger on a pair. Astrals have failed at the stitching and separating between the sole and cloth. They did warranty the stitching one without a problem. Aquaseal on the separation works great. The Adidas Hydro-lace is discontinued. The search continues. Thanks for the great video!

The difference in traction between the Altamas and the Astrals is negligible, and the Altamas will last at least twice as long with identical usage patterns at a little over half the price. I converted to Altama three years ago for hiking and river guiding. Wool socks keep the feet warm and the sand and pebbles out. My only complaint is that they don't have drains in the heal.

I too tried a pair of maritime assaults and was unimpressed. Compared to my sub $30 barefoot trail runners that have been serving as water shoes, the MA were a bit more comfortable wet without socks, but the wet traction was sooooo bad.

Was tempted to jump on those, but managed to find the hydro lace in my size. When these eventually die I'll likely have to give the Mtb shoes a shot.
