Incredible vintage speakers, glad I had this opportunity. These and the Sansui SP20,000 I restored have been the best vintage speakers I've ever heard. Very impressive for the 1970s.
Glorious!! That restore should breathe at least 2 more lifetimes into em! Nice modest rig too, very appropriate. Consider a sealed box sub with these and you couldnt ask for much more beyond that, you could safely say youve arrived ; )
There are great Altecs speakers!! My favorite are the 604E. Altecs are my old school favorites! I have a pair of Model 14s in my studio and Segovias in my living room!!!
I own a set of Altec University Mustangs , and I built a pair of EV Aristocrat enclosure's to put the Mustangs in so they could have a awesome enclosure to call home , the Aristocrat was made bye Paul Klipsch , I got the plans from EV and crafted my Aristocrats bye hand the enclosures where built to give them a more modern look to them , and they work very well together. the sound from them is awesome , I also crafted a set of Sentry 2 EV enclosure's and I use the 12 TRXB speaker as my driver for the Sentry 2 enclosure's , nothing beats EV when it comes to theater and live performances it is a very competitive field .I am the Speaker Doctor of Canada I have repaired a lot of speakers mostly Bose , JBL, Boston , AR, Advent, the list goes on mostly the repair of fixing rotted foam on most speakers that are made the list goes on .
this speaker was to have been my second Altec as a size compromise having had a pair of A7 800. I built the cabinets and had to sell them to cover automobile expenses and I never got back to them. Given your discripption I would suggest you need a new set of diaphragms. Aluminum work hardens when it is struck and if the diaphragm slaps the phase plug you can cause hardening or even crack or break the diaphragm. Once damaged in this way the metal continues to harden and will eventually crack and they sound harsh when the metal is damaged. You may also be running chinese aftermarket diaphragms and not know it. You might want to contact Great Plains Audio (which is modern corporate Altec). The Altec is an amazing quality loudspeaker i you hear otherwise you have problems which can be corrected.
Good job ! 👍🇺🇸. To much talking screw the copy rights ! That’s terrible that they won’t let you use music for play back from a antique stereo. All of my speakers and stereo are from the mid-70’s and early 80’s ! They sound excellent ! I love the older speakers. You can’t replace Size, they need to be so big and put in a room that will let them breathe ! My K-horns and Belle’s , Klipsch rock !
I picked up a pair (never installed) of 15" Altec Lansing Duplex 604B speakers w/ the cross-overs in their original shipping boxes at a yard sale for $150. The fabric surrounds are rotted and need to be replaced, but replacement kits are available. I'm hoping I didn't over pay for these. Does anyone have an idea of the value of these? I've downloaded the original Altec Lansing plans for speaker boxes for this model speaker and hope to do a build in my cabinet shop for these gems.
These speakers are awesome! I recently inherited a pair of these. The horn on one is not working. Do you have any advice on where to start to maybe fix it? You did a great job on those speakers!
With some EQ, I find PA style speakers(compression horn and large paper pro woofer with pleated surrounds) sound better with popular music than anything else.
Its A shame the Altec factory did a crummy job of welding the horns together they are not finished properly those welds should of bin grinded out and made nice and flush so that you don't see them at all , to me that is a factory fail in looks I would of fired the welder Guy first impressions mean every thing .
