More about the Altec Lansing Voice of the Theater:
Altec Lansing made the Voice of the Theatre systems. The design resulted from a collaboration between John Hilliard and Jim Lansing. Douglas Shearer didn't hesitate to approve the Hilliard's proposal and authorized "any reasonable budget". Hilliard became the team leader of this new project. Hilliard immediately recruited Lansing Manufacturing, Robert Stephens, a design draftsman on MGM's staff, and Harry Kimball. The speaker was named the Shearer horn. Later on, a more refined model, the VOTT, was introduced. The smallest model, the A-7, used a medium-sized sectoral metal horn for high frequencies, which featured dividers (sectors) to provide control sound dispersion, plus a medium-sized wooden low-frequency enclosure, which functioned as a hybrid bass-horn/bass-reflex enclosure.
The most often used Voice of the Theatre system was the A-4, many of which are still in use in motion picture theaters as of 2018 The efficiency of all of these products originally provided high sound pressure levels from the limited amplifier power available at the time. The original Voice of the Theatre series included the A-1, A-2, A-4, and the A-5. The A-7 and A-8 were designed for smaller venues.
Bill Hanley used Altec high frequency drivers and horns along with JBL bass drivers in his custom-built loudspeaker system for the Woodstock Festival in 1969 Some professional Altec Lansing products remained in use well into the 1990s.

I have a set of A7-500 replicas I built 15 or 20 years ago. Right now I'm working on building a set of Model Nineteen studio monitors. Neither are for regular listening, I just like them for the nostalgia value.

I love my VOTTs with DIY passive crossovers and driven by my VTA ST-120 with KT-88s. Source is either my Rpi3/AlloBoss music server/DAC or my Teac A-3340S reel to reel...... .pure heaven!❤

Pretty flat on the 15” to begin with- impressive, 3 filters and it’s as flat as a straight edge 💪 Edit: and towards the end, that phase trace 👌 Test tracks sounds grouse albeit through a iPhone or similar. I’ve always wanted to apply modern drivers, amps and dsp to a old 4 way modular rig (aka w bin-4560’s & bi radials 🤔😏 Impressive old Altec boxes! Very flat starting points 👌 Your pretty good at tuning a rig there good sir - no time wasted, straight to the relative filter and point in each time 👌👌👌👏👏👏

No shop is complete without a kitty! Ostensibly employed to catch rodents but usually just there for cuddles when there is stress or frustration. Miao? Meow!

Hey Gary, just happened upon your channel as I'm putting together Some A7s without the Altec drivers (too expensive). How do you feel these sounded with the aftermarket drivers?

I wanna pat the kitty. Also, though good drivers, why did you use them instead of actual Altec drivers? The originals blown beyond repair? Might have been a good candidate for the 804 or even 805s.
