Altered Magazine Pages With Easy Overpainting: Painting on Magazines and Coffee Table Book Papers

Today we look at more ways to alter and distress glossy pages from magazines and coffee table books with overpainting so that they become something else that you can use in your journal pages, collage, or other mixed media work. Overpainting is just that, painting or colouring over the original image once the gloss has been sanded off.
I am showing overpainting with watercolour, gouache, gesso and soft pastel, and a combination of these.
If you have any questions, feedbacks, or ideas of your own, please add them to the comments below and we can compare notes.

It is hands down my fave technique for creating messy mystery. It is NOT everyone's technique (I know because occasionally I will get a loud and long comment making it clear 😺) but it just moves around so much and looks like a peeling fresco and that makes me happy. I hope you are having a creative week! Kelly

Love, LOVE all of these pieces, especially the very first arch, the man, that sort of looked like the pope, fabulous job on him Kelly, And the last multi arches in terracotta colors. Oh, good lord, I can't wait to get started on sanding down some pages, that I loved, but always felt were a "shiny, lost cause"! Kelly, you are super duper! I find these techniques fascinating; however, my concern has to do with copyright laws. It is my understanding that if you use copyright images they must be unrecognizable when you are finished. Many of what you do leaves the images recognizable. How do you deal with that? Thanks!
@BookandPaperArts
@BookandPaperArts 3 месяца назад
Hi Kathy, what a good question. There are two things in play here. One is that most of these images are in the public domain meaning that they can be used freely and for commercial use. Next, there is law called Fair Use which says something like you can use an image to make a new image if it is an original and unique piece. It does not have to be wholly unrecognisable. Have a look online and do a little reading about Fair Use and it should put your mind at ease. Keep me posted! Kelly

@BookandPaperArts
@BookandPaperArts 3 месяца назад
Hi Paige. Gouache is a paint that is heavier than a watercolour but it is water-based as opposed to acrylic paint which has a plastic base. But remember, you do not have to use gouache because I did, especially since I used them since they were all I had on hand and the only reason I have them is that I won them in a drawing a while back! I tend to work in watercolour and ink. Now go give it a try! Kelly

Wow! Three vids by you in a row! I've died and gone to Heaven!! Just started this one, but I can never wait until the endings. Kelly, this first arch pic that you did, is simply stunning. But was that paper the arch was on just book page paper (with shine, of course)?Didn't going over it with thinned out water colors make the book paper warp? I'm asking, as I do love your technique and want to know what I'm in for possibly after I get the papers wet? Thanks!
@BookandPaperArts
@BookandPaperArts 3 месяца назад
Hey Lynn. This was from a coffee table book with black and white plates. I sanded it back (you can see the before and after in the video for contrast) and yes, the paper does warp, even more so if it a thinner magazine page. As it dries, however, it flattens itself (mostly) and you can always iron it under a paper towel and it will lie straight then, or just let it be wobbly for texture. So many options! Keep me posted. Kelly

Here's what I did, and it helped SO much. I started my small mixed media journal with the promise it was going to be the worst page in the world. Then, I intentionally used every technique in my arsenal. I stamped, glued, painted with nail polish, labeled, did ink drawings and dabbed acrylics all over the place. There was no rhyme or reason to anything I did. It turned out horrendous, and I'm so happy! Nothing I did from then on was that awful, and by doing it on the first page, I knew I could get working on the next pages, no problem. The other thing I keep in mind is to work small. My mixed media notebook is only about 5 x 7, and sometimes I even divide the pages into smaller sections. For example, I do 3" x 3" zen tangles, and am done quickly. Or, I collage on half a page. Thinking small keeps me from worrying about how to fill the space. Remember, this is all experiment and play, not a great work of art. No one is going to see it, and you can throw it away if you want. I hope you do try. Being frozen is so frustrating, but the editor that tells us we're no good is not helpful. Send him out to play and you go have fun. Good luck, and Hugs.

Dear Sheila, I wish I could tell you how many, many times I have heard this in my years of teaching journal arts. Not some things - you can do this and not only can but you should. I am making another messy journal for this weekend's video so I hope you stay tuned for that and let it nudge you gently into Doing It and having fun and expressing yourself and using up all of that good stuff that is waiting for you. Next, this may help, a recent video about giving ourselves permission to use that good stuff. Please take note of the first, pinned comment by a hospice nurse who had something wise to say about the cost of not beginning. I have a feeling she was talking to you and didn't know it yet. Hi there, Sheri. I do use an ink jet printer, the HP Envy. It is about four years old and the about printers is that they get better and cheaper for the better ones all the time. HP printers offer an ink "scheme" where you estimate the amount of pages per month and they send you monthly cartridges and it is super cheap and efficient. I really recommend it. Let me know how it goes! Kelly

Hi Gaby, I have enormous respect and love for God. I also believe that God is the great Creative and as such delights in our creating. I did not desecrate an image (and an image in itself is not holy, it is only that, an image and not an idol), I altered it so that it is another image now, one that I believe honours the intention of creating. All the best, Kelly

@BookandPaperArts
@BookandPaperArts 3 месяца назад
@@Ron-AyresThank you for the vote of confidence. As I often work with religious images I am sometimes surprised I don't get this kind of feedback (the original one) more often. However, I feel strongly that a picture or a book is not what is holy and to try to make them so is a bad idea. Still, I occasionally add to a video that I truly have no desire to offend those who believe, nor those who do not. Also, thank you for using the word "pharisaical". That made my day. 🌷🌻🌼Kelly
