Have you ever gotten a new auction catalog or seen an auction listing on eBay and wonder where all these PSA 9 and 10 vintage cards (with the new PSA labels) come from? I have too. Quite accidentally I discovered that one card had an extraordinary rise in its pop count in just a short time. I decided to research other cards to see just how prevalent it is for vintage cards to have an increase in pop counts. The results are troubling to me. Common sense should say that there shouldn’t be this many new high grade vintage cards passing through PSA. What do you think?
To start I identified some well-known vintage cards and then pored over PSA’s Auction Prices Realized section to find past auctions. I read the actual listings of the auctions and was able to pull out pop counts for the cards at specific points in time. Doing this over and over again revealed a time-line for the pops over time.
I also needed to identify the certification numbers of the new cards that were graded by PSA. I did this by finding RU-vid videos of PSA Reveals that were uploaded around the time period I was researching. So for example, if I knew the pop of the Mantle expanded greatly after November 2016 I could go to a PSA Reveal video uploaded then. That led me to knowing that the certification numbers of the Mantle cards should start after 262.
Special thanks to these RU-vidrs for the use of their videos in this project:
