Conclude/conclusion, divert/diversion, invade/invasion... Sometimes it's very obvious that words are related in meaning, and we may not understand why their spelling varies!
These word pairs indeed come from the same Latin verbs, but have different bases. Thus, they share a root, but the 2nd and 4th principal parts of the Latin verb led to different base spellings. These can be referred to as alternate bases. Sometimes they're also called twin bases, though this is less accurate because not all roots only led to two alternates.
It can be great to explore alternate bases with students, including paying attention to different parts of speech that occur using these forms.
