Very original that Indochina was not occupied by Japan, but sided with Free France. Also interesting is the emergence of the Vietnamese-French (and Sino-French) cultural fusion. A more likely turn of events is that the compromise of Hanoi of 1945, whereby Vietnam became an autonomous vietnminh republic within the Indochinese confederation, was respected by the French, and then extended to the entirety of the confederation, making it an autonomous socialist confederation under French military sovereignty. Vietminh communism would have gotten softer, and maybe merged with southern movements into a sort of social nationalism. The Confederation would have intervened in China in 1949, in the year after the crossing of the yangtze by Mao, for the shared objective of avenging the Kuomintang invasion of 1945 and preventing the maoists from taking over the entire country. Indochina would have taken Yunnan, Guangxi and Guizhou, and maybe even pushed until Canton, and stopped the maoists with help of the West and/or soviets. Indochina would have then either transformed these territories into kuomintang ruled bufferland, or eventually annexed some of them into a larger Indochina confederation. Conflict on the border with Northern maoist China would have been constant, and could probably not have ended in any sort of long lasting peace. The origin of my uchronia is that the Indochina war fought beween Vietminh and France was a bloody long and wasteful conflicts. If both forces had sided together to build a powerful independent state instead of getting bogged down in endless conflicts, the resulting force would have been in measure to stop Mao's advance south.
