Yes... once you’ve had them brine for a 3-4 days you can take them out of the brine and vacuum pack them for later...

What’s the best place to order Herring from? Going to give the meat rigs a shot here in Lake Michigan. Great Videos thanks.

Unfortunately I’m not really sure in Michigan... I’d check with your local tackle shop... this alternative bait fish video is honestly because I had so many Lake Michigan guys tell me they couldn’t find herring so I made this video since mackerel and sardine are easy to find.

I've tried and had some success with sardines but I never even thought of mackerel ! Awesome tips Marc. Do you ever dye your strips or just leave them natural ?

I like the Pautske Chartresue and Blue Brines.... when I do color my baits I use those.

Hey Marc I got my first salmon hit on a downrigger thanks to the sardine meat strip! Sadly son lost it in the net when hook caught on the netting and the King gave one last big flop. Anway question for you: when reeling in, my rod tip got absolutely covered in that thick hard to remove seaweed (lice?). I had to put down my rod and clean while fighting the fish because the eyelet was totally plugged. What do you guys do to avoid this?
@KingsLandingSportFishing

I run 40lb monofilament line as it sticks to it less…. I also try to clean it off before it gets to the rod tip by looping the line and pulling the fleas off. Another thing…. Don’t leave your rods in the water long when there are lots of fleas…. Clean the line every 30 mins max…

Hi Marc, question for ya. Here on Lake Oahe in SD. are landlock Chinook Salmons main food source is herring and smelt. We have had problems getting Blue and Green label herring here for sometime now for one reason or another when we used to!!!! This time of year are our sporting good stores are bringing in good sized smelt for our spring northern pike run coming up. The smelt are in that 6-7 inch range. Was wondering if that could be brined for salmon? Can Alewife also be used to as a replacement since its a member of the herring family. I would think bait that is NOT natural what the salmon are living on would be a deterrent! I've heard of guys using tuna, sent ect. but never heard that they had great or any success on it. Thanks!

I’ve used Mackeral, Sardine and Alewife with no issues. Not a deterrent at all. I found I could not get the Smelt to stiffen up enough when I tried.

@@KingsLandingSportFishing Thanks for the quick response Marc!! Sad to hear the smelt doesn't firm up much since they're so abundant here!

Do you keep them in the brine for use right away? Pack them in salt? Keep in a cooler? What do you do after your 3-4 days in the brine. Thanks!

I like to fish with fresh bait so mine are used 3-4 days after brine. That said I do know people who vacuum seal and freeze after 3-4 days
