I ❤️ it...”the ones with the MoST hair got the nerve to be tender-headed..” LoL. I’ve been watching thousands of videos debating on if I wanted to turn my two-strand twists locs into interlocks. I can say that you’ve been one of the realest & most entertaining RU-vidr on the subject. I’m also tender-headed but I also am a DIY’er for my 1st & 2nd set of locs (two stranded both times) however, the length and texture of my hair is different from each other. (Relaxed vs 4C Thick Natural Coils)

Appreciate you watching! Of all the methods by which someone can start locs, two-strand twists are my fav. They don’t balloon or go through as much of a puffy phase as comb coils, are more cylindrical than braids, smoother than backcombing, and neater than freeforming. When I was loose natural I would wear my hair in twists for 2-3 weeks at a time. That’s what helped me eventually take the leap - and ain’t lookin’ back no time soon! 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽

Awesome! Love the sound affect by the way lol I'm so happy you found away to keep up your roots without interlocking! I've finally stopped interlocking and I'm going back to Palm rolling! Yay maybe I'll 2 strand twist to hold them in place longer! Thanks girl!

I truly appreciate your advice. I too have that same battle. Thick hair with the tender scalp, I work out 5 day a week. I was getting so frustrated with the amount time my retwist lasted (maybe a week).
@lhamilt
@lhamilt 7 лет назад
I feel you! Losing a retwist after a week is NO BUENO. The two-strand twists definitely made a difference for me. As my locs have matured, I'm now 3 years in, they hold the maintenance much better.

I have a lot of hair too and i am so tender headed! I have been loc’d for 10 months and i just got my 1st interlocking yesterday. I am pleasantly surprised to say that it did not hurt at all. I am only planning to interlock 3-4 times a year at the most. Your hair look so good. Thanks for the tip because i work out a lot too and i will do this once my interlock start growing out.
@lhamilt

I tried interlocking for the first time!!!! My back row of locs has been nicked accidentally by the barber and wouldn’t stay in the palm roll. It wasn’t horrible, but I wasn’t a fan either. It did the job tho and the hair stayed in the loc!

Strongly considering locs! This was my issue!! I work out and sweat in the head, but I am too tender headed and untalented to interlock!! Lol!! This was the solution I was looking for!! Thank you so much!!

Your hair looks amazing, I love watching your journey, wish I had purposefully documented my own. Almost 6 years in, I prefer to be interlocked. Can't beat only needing to get touched up every 8-12 weeks though. I do notice my pain tolerance is different throughout the month with hormones and such so we try to schedule around it

interlocking never hurts for me and i'm tenderheaded! then again, i do a 2pt finger latch, and i always have a 1/4-1/2 inch at the least that is free at the root. but we all have our different pain thresholds :) lol @ the sealed end distraction. i touch on mine all the time, smh. anyway i'm glad you found a good method! :D
@lhamilt
@lhamilt 9 лет назад
Using fingers would definitely be more comfortable than a hook. My friend Tara I spoke about in the vid said to me that she finds it uncomfortable but effective. My threshold is too low, I say NO! to any discomfort lol

I am the queen of tender head kingdom. I tried the two strand twist again last week and I could only tolerate it for 2 days. I would love to be able to hang on to a style for at least a week. If I try this again, I will do a regular twist to start off and then move into rope twisting down the length of the hair instead. Wish me luck!

Girl.....you gotta do what's comfy for you. It makes sense that your locs won't unravel because the two strand twists "fixes" them and they don't unravel. I am glad that you found a style that withstands the perspiration and wetness from all that swimming. Thanks for sharing!

+lhamilt I definitely will let you know. Retwisting doesnt work on my hair texture unless i use firm setting products, which i learnt after my first year to avoid altogether haha We also dont have a broad range of product selection in Australia specifically for African hair types as you do in America, so my only option has been to interlock and im really lookin forward to takin the dread out of maintenance day so thank you again for providing what could be a third option in loc maintenance :)

Oh wow you live in Australia?! My friend and I will be traveling there for the first time in May! We're going to Sydney and Uluru, then on to Auckland and Bali. +lhamilt Yeh, Im originally from Mauritius but Ive lived in Australia comin on 34 years, moved to South Australia just over a year ago from Western Australia. I actually spent my entire high school years in Alice Springs, a town about 5 hours drive from Uluru..not sure if they still allow people to climb to the top anymore but its worth it if you can, just the most amazing experience..and a great time of the year too that youre goin..not too hot or cold in Central Australia and New South Wales around that time of the year. Youre gonna be on the run doin it in just 2 weeks, Australia is alot larger than people realise but Im so excited for you and your friend, you'll have an amazing time for sure :)

You are inspiring and your hair is gorgeous! I am still loose natural and 2 strand often. What do you put in your locs when you two strand to keep them twisted through all your activity???
@lhamilt
@lhamilt 7 лет назад
Thank you! The tension of the twists opposing the direction in which they are palm rolled help to keep them in place. Eventually frizzing is inevitable, but it helps to keep the frizzies at bay for a little while :-)

Hold on...so you two-strand twisted your locs as an alternative to interlocing? I am going to try it! Did you put elastic bands at the ends?
@lhamilt
@lhamilt 9 лет назад
Yep, purely just for making my retwists last longer. Usually like 2-3 weeks afterwards I unravel them, but the root is still held tight in place afterwards! I do put rubberbands at the ends. Make sure to do your two strand twist in the opposite direction of your palm roll, else the two strand twist will unravel. Let me know how it works for you!

True, but you won't be able to two-strand the roots is the problem. Yes, two-strand holds better than palm roll or comb coil, but the roots need to be maintain every few months. Personally, I like the interlock method but not too tightly.
@lhamilt
@lhamilt 7 лет назад
Interesting! I'm almost 3 years into my journey and still find two-strand twists to be effective at maintaining a retwist when I'm very active and swimming often. Agreed that it's not a permanent solution like an interlock, but it's solid solution for me :-)
@kimberlyakhumaa7671

Hi. When you two strand twist your locs did you put like a rubberband at the end of the twists to hold them. Also do you also put it in a style to keep the twist neat too. Thanks so much
@lhamilt
@lhamilt 9 лет назад
+Just Kim Yep there are rubber bands on the ends. Regarding the styling, sometimes I'll put them up, but it's just super simple styles, like the one in the video, or half up/half down. But honestly most of the time, I just leave them down! And they maintain my retwist very well.

I can relate my ,my I am too very tender headed. I'm in my sixties and the problem will never go away. I have my hair interlocked and this lady hurt me tremendously. I also did not know that she was interlocking my hair way too tight. It does not take the pain to have the look

Great video/sound effects! Thank you for the advice.. Question, I'm about 4 months into my loc journey and my hair is pretty much loc'd with exception of some locs near the lower part of my neck. Would you suggest this method for someone who has shorter locs? Mine are about 6 inches long. Problem is, I play a lot of basketball, so when I sweat my roots look bushy after about 2 days of playing.. This method looks like it may work but I don't want to impede my progress.
@lhamilt

Thank you! Are you open to exploring an up-do? Specifically flat twists in combination with two strand twists styled? That way you can hang on to your smooth roots a bit longer with a bit a flair!

Do you twist all the way down the shafts of the loc or just the roots? I'm 6 months in and don't know what to do. I interlocked at 4 months and now I'm going to retwist.
@lhamilt
@lhamilt 8 лет назад
+tblu “NappyEcclectic” B. When I was early in my loc journey, my loctician would retwist all the way down the root, she called it "locsmithing" in which she wrapped the loose hair allllll the way down the loc. Now almost two years in I can just do a palm roll at the root.
@tblub.9270
@tblub.9270 8 лет назад
+lhamilt thank you so much for your reply. I haven't been locsmithing as you stated. Do you think it's too late for the locs to be trained?
@lhamilt
@lhamilt 8 лет назад
+tblu “NappyEcclectic” B. No problem! I don't think its too late for them to be trained, generally 6 months in they haven't matured yet. What I've seen other locticians do that works well is to apply a small amount of product along the length of the loc, locsmith the loose hair allllll they way down the loc, and when you clip - make sure to clip the hair down in the of the loc, not just the top b/c when it dries being held tautly in the middle, it won't unravel as quickly.
@tblub.9270
@tblub.9270 8 лет назад
+lhamilt Aww man, I've been doing a no product regimen. I've only been using oils, distilled water, and rose water. I was going to retwist with just those products.
@lhamilt
@lhamilt 8 лет назад
+tblu “NappyEcclectic” B. I think it could potentially still work, it's really the tension on the loc w/ it being clipped down that helps to mold the hair. Some product helps just for the sticky/adhesion effect, but it's still worth a whirl!

I just posted the following on some dread videos - I think you are about to speak my language. Let me listen Hey guys, How do people who exercise everyday or sometimes twice daily maintain their retwist? Any tips? The exercise I do is cardio based and I sweat a lot. I retwist and by the third day its all lose. Its demotivating :( Oh yes I have tried interlocking 2 times but don't like it: 1. it takes forever to do 2. i noticed my dreads were thinner around the interlocked area 3. I didn't like the look of interlocked dreads 4. Regardless of how much I tried avoiding the split hole, i managed to get a few. I'm starting to consider using wax for a tighter hold but really don't want to take that pathway. I wear durags when I exercise to hold the dreads together but it still comes undone. Any advice would be handy - what do you fit dreadheads do? Crochet maybe? Thank you, appreciate.
