Hello guys
Welcome to my new video.
Today i ame going o show you how to diagnose and replace so called OAP(Overrunning alternator pulley).
These pulleys are fitted in all modern cars so you can be sure that your car has one on its alternator.
Pulleys shown in the video are the popular VW AUDI clutch pulleys.

Legend, thanks for the thorough explanation. My aux belt has decided to shred a bit off, replacing belt, tensioner and this pulley to make sure everything is healthy and it won't happen again soon

Great video !! I replaced the pulley the first time but paid the mechanic $20 to swap it out as I brought him the alternator and pulley. I was happy. This time... I bought the tool and the pulley. Video is great and so true about the noise that is made when the pulley is bad. The first time I thought my tensioner was bad as you stated. LOL Thanks again.

Thankyou Very Much for this video! Thanks to you I've just replaced the clutch pulley on my wife's ford Galaxy. In our case the pulley fell off!!! Thankfully she was only doing 10mph at the time. I had to angle grind off the remainder of the old pulley shaft before I could fit the new. Tanks a million ;-)

Great video Mike. Was about to order a new power sterring pump as I assumed wrongly that was the culprit. Symptoms you describe (noisy rattle accompanied with flapping belt) match exactly what I'm hearing on my 2001 TDI passat. Its also done 73,000 which seems to align with the espected service life of the alternator pulley. Will be ordering a new pulley and pulley removal tool off interent. Thanks again.

ja wlasnie dzisiaj wymienilem alternator na nowy wszystko gra. ale to juz trzeci w ciagu 4lat zawsze zauwazalem ze ten pullej jest luzniejszy niz jak jest nowy alternator. Po obejzeniu twojego wyjasnienia doszedlem do wniosku ze mozna to naprawic wymieniajac tylko pullej na nowy a nie caly alternator. Bo mysle ze to bylo przyczyna choinki na desce rozdzielczej :) Thank you for your help mate

your a star. i think you just answered my questions with this video as i was just about to go and buy a new alternator but from this i can tell its definitely the clutch pulley because i have had all the belts changed and the tensioner but i still had allot of noise coming from the engine and it was very loud when the car is still and you turn the steering wheel but from this analysis am dead sure its the clutch pulley thanks allot

Thx bro my mk4 vr6(shes at 81k) has been feeling a little different lately especially on start up getting alot of vibration from the serpentine belt and i already changed the tensioner pulley... so sure enough i throw my hex bolt into the tensioner to loosen the belt and i check the alt pulley it was spinning freely in both directions!! Time to replace thx agn

Great video! Very helpful. I think my 2001 Volvo S60 has the same setup. I will be replacing my pulley and voltage regulator as both have 150k miles on them! Luckily no problems yet.

nice one , last year i had the cam belt and a bottom pulley and a belt tentioner fitted the garage removed all the above to do the job , thats why i was under the impression it may have to come back of , great video by the way ; )

Great video. Damnit if I haven't changed dozens on Nissan Altimas, Mercedes, VWs, etc and they never let go that easily. I broke a bit on the last C-class Alternator pulley I did because it was so stubborn. Before attempting this repair yourself, be prepared for a fight and cussing.

Using an impact is the best method of removal. Hand tools can be very difficult.

Hey man. Great video. Thanks. I have a vw transporter t5,2005. The shaft seems to be seized in the alternator. Do you reckon I need a new shaft and a new clutch pulley

A seized alternator pulley caused a chain reaction of damage on my TDI. The added force of the alternator decelerating and the belt driven components receiving more stress, it caused my crankshaft timing gear to move and bent the valves in the engine. I wish I knew about these clutched pulleys short lifespan, it would have saved me lots of money in repairs.

That is fascinating. Thanks for posting. The pulley came off of the alternator this morning on my EuroVan (with a 1.9L TDI). Wasn't able to find it, but the shaft is okay. Assuming it must have seized up. I installed it a little over three years ago, an upgrade from the solid pulley that was on there. It appears that the OE INA brand pulley is discontinued for my particular setup, but Gates and Hella still seem to produce them. I've ordered both. I think the original INA pulley I installed had seen about 60,000 miles.

@@conorf8091 Definitely worth the peace of mind. I bought a spare INA pulley for the future. I don't want to be taking my engine apart again over a pulley or a timing belt issue caused by a failed pulley.

@@davidparker9676 good advice thanks. Got a near mint condition mk4 but noisy belt or pulley, unaware catastrophic damage can happen. Hoping it’s a issue that can be fixed without lifting the car. Don’t like going under them on axle stands etc work from engine bay above if possible

@@conorf8091 I did my MK3 from the top, I know the MK4 is a tighter fit. Do you have the pulley tools already? FCP Euro has a good price on the socket, and NAPA has the M10 triplesquare bit that fits through the spline socket. Make sure to check/replace your crankshaft timing sprocket when you do your next timing belt.

NVM, it's a deceleration coupler clutch. Used for torque control and to relieve the stress on the drive belt system. Actually it's an ingenious design. Reduces noise, belt tension from the alternator, and torque control.

Thanks for the information. No apparent sign of wear marks on the casing. New tensioner and idler pulley have been fitted but the belt is flapping on tick over sounds awful. I am pretty sure it's a problem with the pulley would your locking test apply to the megane i.e locking armature results in pulley moving both directions or pulley is locked in both directions indicates a defective clutch pulley?
