Excellent video. Did not need to remove the hose bracket or unplug the cooling fan. Just dropped it down. Like the man said, thread the bolts into the alt and AC compressor prior to re-installation and tap the friction sldes back so both easily slide back into position.

I have a few tips for fellow diyers - If you don't have a vise, drill 3 holes in a 2/4 and have a helper insert a nail, make sure it doesn't stick out far or the car frame will get in the way when you try to remove it later - You don't have to unplug the fan, that connector is very hard to get at from any angle with the drivers side fan still in place. so just set it aside. -The friction fits on the AC compressor are a huge pain to get it back in place, I tried brute force, prybars, and a rubber mallet. eventually I figured out I could use the cars jack and a piece of wood to force the compressor back in. - The belt likes to slip off the ac compressor when the tensioner is disengaged, double check it before you pull out the nail. -You can use large pliers or vise grips for the specialty hose clamps
So what you're showing me is that when I need to replace the alternator in my TDI swapped samurai, I will need to pull the engine. I cant move the frame rail out of the way to move it sideways, and the motor mount and coolant pipe need to come out to get clearance behind it. Maybe I'll build new brackets and relocate it.
You can just remove the top air intake tube (two clamps(, remove the power steering pulley (three bolts) Then put a vise grip on what is left of your pulley and use a triple square (12 point bit) on the end of the alternator shaft. If your pulley is still on use a decoupler pulley service kit 27275 from auto zone and remove the pulley with the alternator in place. I got my pulley from fcp in Groton ct on line for $41. The tool rental is free from auto zone.
normally when I do this, I pull the lower radiator hose and the hose coming from the coolant reservoir off the pipes, then the oil pressure switch, slide the alternator out and up, I think this way is faster
I'm in an absolute rage right now dealing with this design. I've pulled alternators on so many different vehicles and I would rate this one as the worst and it's not close
