Glad to know I'm not the only one using tins for my Survival Kit or EDC! You'd be surprised that a regular 91mm Victorinox knife DOES FIT inside an Altoid box. I've made a little outdoor kit that I carry with me everytime. It contains: - 1 84mm Victorinow Walker (Blade + Saw + Combo tool + Tweezers + Firefly rod) - 1 Olight I1r2 flashlight - 1 Clipper lighter - 1 tiny compass - 2 Paracetamol pills - 1 Water purification pill - 2 Band-aids - 1 Alcohol wipe - 2 Safety pins - Some Gorilla tape - Some thread

I bought a kids picture/paint kit at Dollar Tree and cleaned out the tiny plastic containers and separated them. They have lids and are easy to use. I put Neosporin in one, a hunk of Burts Bees lip balm in one, and Cortisone cream in another. If you make another kit for first aid I highly recommend doing that. I'm a grandma and carry them with me everywhere with some bandaids. I use them all the time for EDC.

No way! I literally just did the same thing last night to 3 little acrylic paint containers you're talking about. I sorted meds into them - pain management / digestive / allergies. Btw, those little tabs that are supposed to help you open it can be cut off to save space. They don't work too well anyway.

Smart, compact kit. A zip lock bag to carry water is worthwhile. Worth swapping out some fire starters for. An emergency blanket is worthwhile. It can act as a signal mirror, solar oven (to boil water in the altoid tin for example.) provide emergency body warmth. Help treat shock victims. Help collect water. Help distill water. Very practical item. Foil and gorilla tape are also worthwhile. Hope/morale, water, shelter and signaling for help are the main priorities.

I use a container from an extra-large deodorant stick I found at the dollar store. After I used the deodorant, I glued the dial to close the hole on the bottom, and there is enough room for all that stuff plus more!

To complement the water purification tabs, tightly roll up a plastic supermarket produce bag to use as a water bag (it will hold at least a half gallon); carry it inside a sock for extra strength. Use a short piece of drinking straw, slit along its length, to keep the bag from unrolling. Add a few feet of fine brass snare wire. If you can get some potassium permanganate, store some in a tin-length piece of plastic straw and seal the ends. The powder can be used to sterilize water, disinfect wounds, and with a couple drops of glycerin (sealed in a separate tube), you'll have a chemical reaction fire-starter. Add a single-edge razor blade (to open the sealed straws and other cutting actions. Stick a piece of brightly colored duct or gorilla tape inside the top of the tin, to be used as trail markers, tinder, or (torn into narrow strips) as an emergency suture. Make a small bundle of 15-20 ft of plain, waxed dental floss to use for fishing line with the Survival Card hooks. I got all that and a lot more in mine, but you may be able to squeeze some of these into yours.

something additional that I've found to be very helpful even for "non-emergencies" is gaffer or duct tape - you can unwind a yard / meter or two and flatten it out and stick it to the top of your tin. also, many things you buy these days comes with small parts in a tiny baggie - I save those and use them to keep tinder dry or keep some medication "fresh". a ball point pen "insert / refill" is nice to have - you may need to write something down or leave a note - most people no longer carry a pen...

Add: small ferro, aluminum foil (folded flat), Duct/gorilla tape (folded flat). Could also strap an emergency blanket or 2 (plus some trash bags) to the outside with ranger bands, and give yourself some pocket sized cover if you can stand a bit of extra girth. Remove: rechargable light and relace it with one of those tiny 1 time use lights. Primarily because this kit is supposed to be a "set it and forget it situation" and you shouldn't have to think about unpacking the kit to recharge the light on occasion. And also because you wouldn't have anything to recharge it with in a survival situation. Other than that, love the kit!

Overall, not a bad effort, but here are my thoughts on your kit: 1) that's a Fresnel lens, invented by Augustin-Jean Fresnel in the 1820s. It's pronounced "Fray-NEL". Fresno is a city in California. 2) I hold no truck with 'survival card" tools; I consider them to be cheap crap, at best. Use real tools. There are many suited to such small kits. 3) Don't depend on finding a suitable container to sterilize water. Use WhirlPack 1-liter plastic bags. They roll up nice and small. I pack one for collection, and one for sterilization after pre-filtering through a Melitta cone coffee filter. 4) You seem to have taken up a lot of room with fire combustion, when reducing the fire focus would free up some room for other items. I pack a ferrocerium rod and striker, and have perfected my skills to the point that I can start a fire with it 95% of the time. I carry some man-made tinder for times that natural tinders are uncooperative, and I pack a mini BIC lighter as a backup. 5) Your kit seems focused on wilderness survival, so the $20 bill seems unnecessary, unless you plan to walk out to a road where there's a waiting taxi and a restaurant. It just seems more suited to an urban kit. Finally, 6) Altoid tins are fun as an exercise in miniaturization, and building a kit small enough to ride unobtrusively in a shirt pocket, but real tools are preferred and more reliable. I use a Maxpedition Mini and pack it with real gear - Swiss Army Farmer, Leatherman Squirt, 6" ferro rod, 550 cord, SOL Heat Sheet, WhirlPack bags, etc. - stuff I know how to use and can depend on in a clinch. Like I said, overall a good effort. Reconsider the carry method and take a look at some pouches - Maxpedition, Vanquest, Condor, Black Diamond - and pack some real tools. They'll serve you better. Then get into the forest and hone your skills with those tools so you don't have to wonder what to do when the time comes to save your own or another's life. Good luck to you Sir! PS: if you (or anyone else) want to know the contents of my kit, leave a reply to this comment. I'll answer...

Its a pretty compact knife format. you could take the knife off the card, sharpen it, and put it in the bottom of the tin (or just put a derma-safe razor in the kit). Same with (mostly useless) saw and the fish hooks (sharpen them a bit tho). Just get rid of the magnet. I have a couple of those tiny survival guide booklets. A lot of good info in a compact format.

Toys are always fun, aren't they? A real tin can hold things like: whistle, Jet Scream x 1 fishing line, mono filament, #30 (50 feet) x 1 compass, Sun, Minicomp 2 x 1 saw, wire x 2 split ring (1 inch) x 2 wire, brass, 20 g (12 feet) x 1 thread, machine, bobbin, disposable, T-16 (225 yds) x 1 needle, sail, #13 x 1 needle, darning, #18 x 1 ferro rod (3/8 x 4) x 1 hook, fishing, bait, #8 x 4 hook, fishing, bait, #6 x 4 hook, fishing, bait, #4 x 4 safety pin, #1 x 10 safety pin, #2 x 5 safety pin, #3 x 2 potassium permanganate, plastic vial (3/8 x 3 1/2) x 1 lens, Fresnel (2 x 3 1/2) x 1 torch, Photon Microlight, Freedom (w/diffuser bulb) x 1 cotton mop strand, wax soaked (1/4 x 4) x 2 matches, lifeboat x 8 matches, strike anywhere x 28* signal mirror, SOL, rescue flash x 1 sharpener, diamond, DMT card sharp, blue x 1 sharpener, diamond, DMT card sharp, red x 1 sharpener, diamond, DMT card sharp, green x 1 ranger band (3/4 inch) x 4 rubber, inner tube (1 3/4 x 4 1/4) x 2* tape, vinyl (18 inches) x 1* cotton wool knife, folding, Cold Steel Finn Wolf x 1* When you can fit that inside^ your minty trinket box, let me know. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- * The knife is not in the tin, since anything that would fit inside is useless other than gutting fish and picking splinters. That is kept in my vest, with the tin and three 1 qt zip-seal freezer bags for carrying water, to be treated by a few grains of potassium permanganate. ^ Tin measures 4 1/4 x 3 1/2 x 7/8. Sharpening cards and matches are sealed in waterproof packets and sit on the outside bottom and outside top of the tin, secured in two places by ranger bands with inner tube rubber underneath to prevent shifting and act as secondary wet weather tinder source. Tin is sealed with vinyl tape to make it dunk-proof.

Thanks for the video. Any way to fit a thin plastic 1 litre bag in there, in case you don’t find a bottle in the first day or so? Also, there’s no shelter, and if you’re caught out in the rain you’ll wish you had a trash bag or a thin poncho. These kits often place a strong emphasis on fire lighting but that takes time and energy and often it’s possible to reach shelter or help if you can treat blisters, stay dry and keep moving. A compass is of little help without a map. Being limited by the size of a tin makes these kits far less useful than something the size of a zip pouch or pencil case.

although the survival card is a good idea - and probably could serve as a nice backup - I'd go with a small micro sized multi-tool. I'd stick with two fire sources and not 1/2 of your kit but then again there's no reason why you couldn't build out more than one kit: one for fire and "fishing", one for medical and water purification and one for tools and "backups" for the other two kits.

HINT : if you want a small compass that can actually work giving you more than just basic direction.. purchase a brunton wrist compass..@$23 .. but it is a full functioning compass with degree markings and rotating bezel.. still fits nice into the Altoids tin

That is one of the BEST Altoids tin survival kits I've ever seen! No... THE best! I'm going to watch it again and take a couple of notes. You could possible add a whirl-pack water bladder? I make Nalgene bottle kits for my family and friends, but I never thought of the cash. That is a good add. Just $40 bucks. I like that little flashlight also. it looks pretty capable for a small format flashlight. That little survival tool card is very gimmicky... but if the knife and fish hooks are sharpened its better than nothing, and it is a very compact format. I put CRKT Squids in my kits, but I have more room to work with!

Replace the mirror, for a smaller version. Grim Workshop makes one even smaller, the size of a dog tag.

Decent little hiking tin, but not much of an edc. I'd throw a couple band-aids and some straws with an antibacterial and benadryl. I'd also lose the "survival card" and replace it with one of the blades you can afix a makeshift handle to.

Attach a Mylar blanket to the exterior and a few bandaids along with some ibuprofen.

ORION SANFORD it’s the most important thing you can carry. I would have added some bandages, alcohol wipes and anti bacterial ointment though. Also some pain meds.

I would go more micro and add cutting tool, matches, super glue, lockpicks etc. Oh wait I did all that with my kit. The light is pretty big and you wont be recharging it in an emergency nano streamlight would be better. Jmho. Nice kit. thanks for sharing.

Lockpicks? Really? What, plan on doing a bit of criminal trespassing when it all goes down? Lol, people like you who think they need to tote around shit like lock picks and pry bars and 18 inch bolt cutters amuse me. It's like you're prepping for a spot on Oceans 11! Let me clue you in mate. In a disaster, your first priority is to get you and your family out of town, the easiest way possible; not to be cracking open doors or snapping locks or playing search and rescue with your wonder bar, because even in an earthquake or tornado, there's always a way to get around without resorting to junior commando tactics while humping a M.O.L.L.E. tacti-cool pack and fatigues. Anything else is the product of Hollywood disaster dramas. But in the end, it's up to you, so you can get as butthurt in your reply as you want. Or you can be an adult and not make any reply at all. Even then, it's your time that's getting wasted, not mine.

I’ve never seen anybody talk about using a piece of a drinking straw in their Altoids survival tin for a safety/emergency whistle but it takes no space and if you cut it right and know how those things are extremely loud..

It's not a "Fresno lens", it's a **Fresnel** lens. Fresno is a city in California 😉👍

How about a condom,, sack all your fire lighting just have a small bic lighter, maybe a mini Ferber or leather an tool, length of fishing line and a scalpel blade. Also a few elastic bands around the tin, maybe to hold your mini leatherman on outside of tin creating yet more space inside?

From my experience it will work on a very sunny day. But not as easy as people think. An A4 size one will be much better.
@redbearpreparedness2882

I’ve started several fires with a wallet sized fresnel lens. I always carry some small pieces of black construction paper with them. Fold the paper into an accordion shape, then concentrate the sunlight in the middle. When you get a small ember with lots of smoke, whip it back and forth to fan it into flames.
