sounds convenient, but how much better are sonar scans with a device that actually touches the ground?

The real advantage of using drones for this type of data acquisition is that it allows for the scanning of areas that cannot be accessed by other tools, or large areas where typical methods would be inefficient. For magnetometry (and GPR/sonar) scans, our drones can fly along the surface at a very low, predetermined altitude. This provides quality data that is sufficient for most applications. While having a ground-coupled system gives optimal data, collecting this level of data is often not necessary or practical. So, it really depends on what you’re scanning and what you’ll be using the data for! The magnetometry sensor has a high sampling rate, which means it is possible to filter out the constant noise produced by the motors during raw data export.
