Very grateful, Mike. I started listening to your songs in 2015, I've heard just about everything you wrote, I really enjoy your work and your music inspired me to do that too. After 4 years, watching this video of yours is like a gift to me.

I love videos like this. Just goes to show how much more is going on in the music than what we might be hearing. The software does look overwhelming, but it also looks like a lot of fun to mess around with if you know your way around!

Mike, thanks for opening the veil, affording us a peek into your genius. The fact that you produce such breathtaking audio (and accompanying video) landscapes, without formal training, is - in itself - further proof of your mastery. We appreciate you, all the more, as this invitation into your tools and process further bridges our mutual connection, by allowing us to draw upon our personal adaptation of your dreamscape and its reflection of our own world.

Mike, if I may suggest, in your next video, show us your creative process in action; perhaps a peek into a live work-in-progress, even if you don't speak over it. Also, share what inspired some of your tracks; a personal emotion or simply a cool sample sound? How many hours go into a track, start to end, and what's the longest contiguous time you spend before taking a break? Do you have a career and, hence, work on your music late into the night? Do you only work on one track until completion or do you have spinoff ideas that spawn new tracks? Are those your photographs on the album covers? How do you decide on a track title? Who inspires YOU, musically? What do you listen to, when not working on your own music? Also, what computer, accessory hardware and studio speakers do you employ? Do you do everything with the computer mouse and keyboard or do you have an external Midi piano keyboard controller?

I don't really know why I have waited so long to tell you how much your music is important for me. I have been listening to your creations for 5 years now and it helped me to reach a deeper side of me all those times. I always have a feeling of peace, quietness and also power. My goal and hope is that, one day through my work, I will be able to give you back something. You have given me quite a lot all those years. Thank you so much

As I had already commented, I listened to just about everything you produced, and it's hard to choose a specific work, Innerspace was a wise choice, I personally always wanted to know the "mysteries of your kitchen" on this album. But if you could do a Behind The Scenes about "The Time Collection part 1" or "Komorebi", it would be amazing, in my opinion. I'm watching your video for the third time :D
@altusmusic_ca

Yeah, I figured if I did a second one, Komorebi would be the next logical choice. :)

Sounds a bit dramatic but when I was really ill many years ago (I'm okay now!), your music basically got me through that period in my life. It helped me focus on recovery if that makes sense. Really appreciate you showing us the process. This was like meeting a famous person and going all wobbly at the knees 😁

Ambient music is mostly the mastery of sound design and atmosphere. Which is what I love about Steve Roach or your style. It's all about emotion, dream like atmosphere and drones. Then there is the more melodic, dramatic type Ambient. Jonn Serrie or even Vangelis ( Blade Runner Blues ) come to mind. I'm always surprised how people differ in their VST effects. I prefer Lexicons Reverb plug inns over everything...and Samplitude is my main DAW. I also try my best to stay away from software synths ( I am a 90ies synth collector...Yamaha An1x, EX5, Fs1r, Ensoniq Fizmo etc ) especially when producing Drum & Bass. I think the most important tip is to keep your equipment at a bare minimum and learn how to get the best out of your bare minimum. Concerning your music...phenomenal find and perfect background music for my studies or when reading...glad I found you recently.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and I'm glad to hear you've been enjoying the music. I've been making music since 93, learning the craft with trackers, which is why I prefer using software over hardware today.

My love for this genre really started with artists like Vangelis and Mike Oldfield for the long, rich and often complex compositions . These guys heavily mixed their sounds to give that familiar musical "recipe" that had me thirsting for greater depth to the idea. Then I discovered Altus and not long after, Bing Satellites. It was like coming home and completing a long journey. I first heard Altus on a RU-vid video someone posted about US bombing raids over Germany in the war and the track overlaying the video was "Umbra" from the album "Symmetry and Shadows". I was floored by the rich sound and many albums later I'm still loving it. Thank you, Mike, your sound is amazing regardless of how simple you make it out to be. Umbra is really interesting, what setup did you use on that track?
@altusmusic_ca
@altusmusic_ca 4 года назад
Thanks for sharing, Marc. "Umbra" has an interesting story in its creation, so I'll add it to my list of questions for a future video.

Look forward to it! BTW, "Inner Space" gave me the strength to paint out a room I'd been putting off due to my hate of painting. Lol. I've found that paired UE Boom speakers through my iPad do a pretty good job, but, eventually I want to run your albums from FLAC through my receiver and Bose speaker system. Can't wait.

Altus Music copied this link in a comment section, so here I am. I'm one of those "who likes the genre and is writing/composing music",...and haven't been in it long, though I have played music of some sort for about as long as this artist. But as for this genre, I listened to it all the way back in the 1990's and for many years, wanted to do my own music. A few years ago, I got a couple of DAWs [FL Studios and Studio One] and started. Thus far, I've only used Studio One and a low end keyboard, which has been my main issue. The keyboard has poor sounds, especially for this genre, but I did my best with what I had. I've been contemplating moving to FL Studio and not "off the cuff" composition...though it can be done that way, and I may still do that if I had a decent keyboard with much better sound engine. Anyway, I'm glad to be able to watch this video for ideas. Thank you!
@altusmusic_ca

A good reverb can do an excellent job of taking "poor sounds" from a synth and make them sound rich and full, so it's definitely worth your while to experiment. DAWs are a deeply personal thing for each musician, so experimenting with demo versions of software is highly recommended. Or watch lots of tutorial videos on RU-vid to see if how they operate clicks with you. Good luck, and most importantly, enjoy the process of learning. If you stick with it, creating music (in any genre) can be rewarding and deeply fulfilling.

@@altusmusic_ca Thank you for the reply and the advice! What I have done thus far, though not where I'd like to be, has been enjoyable and rewarding. I'm hoping to break out into other genres as well, but ambient is definitely one of my favorites. Again, thanks! 🙂

Awesome tutorial. Really enjoy your music, and seeing your process doesn't take any of the magic out of it. My question is, do you render each track to its own audio then do the final mix and master, or do you just render it all to one final track? and do you render in real time or full speed/offline? In general I'm very curious about the post-production process.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the video. I export each track/instrument as a separate WAV file and mix/master in Studio One. I plan on creating a Q+A video to accompany this one, so I'll go into more detail there.
