I will begin by stating: This is not ambient.
When I announced Altus was going to cover new ground in 2018, I released "Pioneer", but even that fell into familiar territory. Creating "Strength of Fate" was a dedicated challenge to break the mould and really go beyond my comfort zone, yet if you listen closely, you'll still hear the raw emotional core of Altus.
I will admit this was a self-indulgence; something wholly created for myself. While working on it, I considered not releasing at all. Not that I thought it wasn't worth sharing, I simply didn't want to alienate you, or frighten you away with such a vast change in sound. But that's the reason Loneward exists. Loneward is the anchor of Altus' past. Don't fret, I still love making ambient music, and I still have many quiet places to explore.
Nearly everything I write has always been about a taking a journey or reaching a destination, and this is no different. In many ways, this might be the most personal story I've told, but I encourage you to imprint your own life experiences onto it. Doing so makes the music yours.
I truly hope you take the time to listen, and not dismiss it due to its vast departure from my previous work. Rest assured this is only a pitstop in my journey, not a permanent fixture. Take my hand and stand alongside me. I won't lead you astray, and I'll always bring you back home.

Thanks! I had originally planned on something more post-rockish, but this came out instead. One day I'll give the post-rock genre another try.

Don't worry, it's a nice surprise. Who says you are obliged to make the same style of music all the time? Yes, I had expected something different. But this is also really well made, as usual when it comes from you. After a moment of astonishment it took me back straight to the 70s, to music from bands like King Crimson, or Steve Hillage or Mike Oldfield. Minus the vocals of course. Even a little bit of Pink Floyd at times... :) I'm already looking forward to what you will do next! ;)

I very much like this Mike! I am going to do some writing to this, so it'll be interesting to see how I am influenced by the presence of your music. This strikes me as being good open country driving music. Soundscapes for landscapes. By the way, I love love love your ambient work. I string together your work with other things I've cobbled together and do two hour meditations with great results. Cheers and be well.

I'm glad to see and hear new Altus material. I listened to Altus almost exclusively while exercising in my basement. But then I purchased a gym membership and had no (easy) way of listening. Now, during the COVID-19 work-from-home-all-gyms-are-closed shakeup, I was *wondering* what was missing from my exercise routine. Then I remembered: Altus.

I like it, you have entered a new level, your music is becoming more complex, yes, it is very different if I consider your old works, but I bet you will feel more complete as an artist, evolving and facing new challenges. Success for you!

Absolutely love it when top-notch artists show they can dual-wield. Here with you til the end! Also, it's so easy to be formulaic with post-rock and just make wallpaper. So this work being engaging and real just takes it to the next level.

It is a change of pace, but as a person who appreciates experimental rock, I'm a fan. I've been recommending your music to my friends and romantic partners for years. I use your music as a way to treat my depressive episodes. Oftentimes, it helps me write, play chess, or simply ruminate on the years. Definetely it's a post-rock album. I can't say this music is bad but....I will stay by Your ambient side, without rhytms :)

This is awesome. Takes me back to my formative years listening to King Crimson, Manfred Mann and many other Prog Rock pioneers. You may not have intended it to do that but then, music elicits different memories in different people.

Well, it's good for an artist to evolve and find new ways of expression for what is inside in the moment. You have not to stick always to a unique style: it would look like as eat the same meal for twenty years. An artist must evolve if he or she doesn't want to rot. From the first minutes I realize that this work is not exactly "ambient music", but it's nearer to the style of "symphonic rock". Maybe it was not useful to convey the powerful emotions present here through the vehicle of "another boring piece of ambient music". In a nutshell: it's not music "for meditate" (or "dream"), but "for listen". Good job.

Fantastic. might be able to file this under "space rock". reminds me of the 90s in the best way. Especially love the guitar tones, and pretty much everything else.

It's completely normal for an artist to evolve in his music : Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and many others. The artist evolves as we all evolve in life. We all want to explore new things so why wouldn't an artist do it ? I really like this album, it reminds me on certain points of "Croassroads" in more rock. It can inspire me for an artistic work in my moments of introspection. (sorry for my english, is not my native language).
