Great explanation Tim, no matter the experience level you might catch something you didn’t know you should pay attention to.

Another helpful and informative video, Thank You. After taking your course, the whole process comes together so much better. The course shortened the learning curve so much more than anything I have read or watched! Money well spent IMO!

At the 0.57 sec mark, you turn on the gas. Can I suggest that this is turned on a bit slower. Reason being, is that if you turn it on too fast, there may be the potential for the metal ball to strike the top of the glass sight (potentially it could be hit, and break). Just taking a second or so longer to ease the valve open, could save a breakage of the glass.

Great information regarding the "clipped" end of the filler rod! I'll pay way more attention to mine in the future.

Hi Tim. Clear and concise as always. By the way, with that yellow and black logo you now have to get an ESAB.

What filler rod would you use on an aluminum alloy engine (for specificity sake - An Audi A6 engine)? 5356, 4043, 4943 ??? It's to repair a spun main bearing so I need to weld the crankshaft retaining portion of the aluminum allow engine block and possibly the crankshaft main bearing journal (which I believe is hardened steel - different filler rod question?)

I notice the additional plate you have on your table? Is this for stopping spatter on the table and the need to clean it up later?
@ZILAwelds

3:40 that is most likely 5356 filler … you can tell by the green flame …. For sure more than 3% magnesium content

That’s right, 5356. 👍

Just found this channel and I love it. I'm going to purchase your mig/flux core class. I have a question regarding machine's please. Eastwood seems to have some decent machines but I don't know anything about them them. I've also looked at the upper end of the harbor freight models. Will be used primarily farm equipment etc.. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I haven’t used Eastwood machines before, so I can’t really comment on them specifically. It’s a big enough company that they’ve most likely done a good job of sourcing a decent product. I assume they are import machines, similar in quality to the better Harbor Freight machines and some of the other importers. As far as Harbor Freight goes, I’ve run 30 lbs or so of wire through their Titanium MIG 170 and thought it worked great for the price. I have generally heard good things about the Vulcan machines for their price as well. For machines in that entry level range, I’d recommend also considering PrimeWeld as an option because they give a nice package for the price and really stand behind their products with outstanding customer service. Personally, I weld quite a bit, so it makes sense long term for me to spend a bit more for a machine built with some more heavy duty components. HTP sponsors my channel and I’m happy to represent them because their machines, while certainly not the cheapest, punch way above anything else I’ve used in the same price range. There’s a link to them in the description. I have also used Miller, Lincoln, ESAB and Fronius machines with generally good success. There’s really not one right answer, and you’ll be able to reach your goals with any of these brands. I don’t get notifications for replies to these comments, but feel free to email me at the address on my website contact page and I’m happy to answer any other specific questions.

Family member said welders can go blind is that a common problem ❓
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 11 месяцев назад
I don’t personally know anyone who has followed all safety practices and gone blind, though it can lead to some eye strain. There are a lot of different welding careers and some of them are much harder on the body than others. There are organizations that gather statistics on such things that can be found through Google.
