I accidentally discovered Ten Years After when I bought their LP "Sssh." And only because of the album cover. WELL! I was very impressed; I was only 18 when I bought it, and had no exposure to the blues. The song "I Woke Up This Morning" blew me away. Now, at 73, I am still amazed at Alvin's blues work, and this is about the best. And I'm not a guitar player, just loved rock and roll since I was 13.

One of the great 'unknown' guitarists along with Roy Buchanan. Only song most people know of Alvin's is "I'd Love to Change the World" with Ten Years After. Roy Buchanan's "Blues For Gary" really displays his guitar prowess. For Roy's bangers try "Dr. Rock and Roll" and "My Babe".

George Harrison proving once again how tasty he is as a guitar player... that first slide solo was heavenly... and combine that with Alvin's blistering solo makes this song such a glorious one of contrasts. I loved Alvin Lee's playing early on with Ten Years After. I saw them live and they were incredible. I kind of lost track of Alvin over the years. I forgot how good he was. Well hot damn!!! I suggested this just a couple of days ago. Thanks for playing it Chod. It is a wonderful tune for sure. But it is a little unique for the mighty Alvin Lee. Who is known for bringing the smoke to the fire. Eddie van Halen, Jimmy Page, Jimmi Hendrix all have stated that Alvin Lee is their most revered guitar player. And I believe you would be the first of your piers to do, Ten Years After, "Good morning little School Girl" live from Winterland....anyway I am grateful for this. Glad you liked it. I saw him once knock over his entire amplifier/speaker stack when it started to mess up at the end of a Ten Years After concert. He turned back towards the audience, smiled and waved, and left the stage. Pretty dramatic end, and it made up for missing the last song or two during the encore. Very "Who"-like. Alvin Lee was the man, and TYA rocked hard as a a band.

That's Beatle George Harrison playing the haunting, scintillating slide guitar solo. I've seen Harrison playing live with Robben Ford, the fine blues-fusion guitarist, and of course with Clapton. But all due respect to those pairings, this Lee and Harrison pairing is one of the most haunting performances either have achieved; Lee draws Harrison out of his usual artful melodic fastidiousness to get George to make his guitar, ahem, truly WEEP in the art of the melody of loss and transcendence: and Harrison repays the debt, giving the intro to the place where Alvin Lee can assert-- once and for all --that he was no mere guitar gunslinger but an artist , ARTIST, worthy of a Jeff Beck and maybe, just maybe Jimi himself. When, when has Lee ever matched his vocal with his lead guitar so plaintively, so movingly?? We've lost these two greats, and what I would have given to hear them do a full solo album together, with a version of George's While My Guitar Gently Weeps with a featured place for Prince himself to join in and make that connection. Yeah. The loss is incalculable. This track "cuts me to the bone" on THAT TRUTH.

The question: Why is Alvin Lee ignored or disrespected by guitar aficionados. He is best known for his famous riff at Woodstock ("I'm Going Home"), and the Billboard hit "If I Could Change the World." I think his best work was "Bluest of Blues." If you like real blues music, "Bluest ....." should be on your A-List. In addition to his soulful singing and lyrics, his guitar solo at the end will make you weep; you'd swear the guitar was singing. He was so good George Harrison played a sweet guitar slide in the middle. Jimmy Page once said that Lee was the only performer he would actually pay money to see live. At least Jimmy knows greatness when he hears it.

Alvin Lee was sort of the guy who didn't get the credit he deserved as a contemporary of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page and other British players hitting the scene in the late 60's. It's a shame, he has a great feel for the blues and when he wants to, he can shred with all those other guys.
