Been a fan of DireStrait since mid 90’ awesome musicians. More of Mark Knopfler,,have a listen of Knopfler on Guitar and Chris Botti on Trompette playing What a wonderful World
Welcome to real rock’n roll, grasshopper. An era when people actually played the music rather than over-produced, digitally enhanced and auto-tuned it. No overly sung vocal trills here. Just live Rock.
I’ve been listening to Mark Knopfler for 40 years. The man is a musical genius and, quite possibly, one of the greatest guitarists that’s ever lived, in my humble opinion.
And me thinking i was the only one! Can't stop listening to them since first time when i was 12. I'm 32 now. My only drug for life. No side effects. Just chills every single time. And it's well set to be for life! A blessing.
Well, I'm in my early thirties & my best song if anyone asks me is Brothers in arms by Dire Straits. While Sultan of Swings is a masterpiece, made by genius who arranged melody onto written words, then smashed solos while being first guitar under the microphone into this marvelous feature we've witnessed.
My dads 73 and I grew up on his music taste every Sunday whilst he ironed his shirts for the week. Sultans made me come downstairs and ask him who it was, glad I’ve got an older Dad
It’s truly hard to imagine a guitarist that hasn’t heard of Mark Knopfler. He’s commonly listed as one of the top five rock guitarists of all time. Admittedly, I’m 73 years old and have known this song since its release but Knopfler is my favorite. There are others right up there (pick your favorites) but I love his work.
Definitely top 5 of all time! Hard to believe a guitarist openly admitting to not have heard of knopfler and I had to watch this video just because I was slightly offended by the title, lol. But its really fun to watch him experience Knopfler for the first time
It is just a pretend game. A way to gather wievs from «fair use» of others original work. Of course he has heard it before. There are channels of «professional musicians» pretending to not have heard The Beatles. Including a Harpist pretending to not having heard She’s leaving home. It is beyond ridicolous.
I heard that Terry’s father came to see him for the first time at this concert so the band told him to just go for it. Totally agree , one of the best guitarists ever in Mark Knopfler. ❤
I'm a guitar player and can't appreciate Knopfler enough but when I saw this live performance for the first time, it was Terry's drumming that just blew me away. That guy could put on a clinic on how to play drums live.
Dire Straits are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Brothers In Arms", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "So Far Away" etc. They don't have a bad song.
I don’t think people give enough credit to Terry Williams here, quite honestly one of the best drum performances I’ve seen ever. Unreal! Glad I bought the vinyl!
Absolutely. But I think that ALL of them performed flawlessly in this particular occasion. It's hard to improve a studio version live usually, but this one I think does. This guy is in another league in guitar, the others were excellent and that night performed like never before
Gratitude for you and your serving brothers & sisters. Sebs may remember he did the Home Free cover of that song a few months earlier. If you've not experienced it, go do.. I'd suggest first here on Home Free's channel > ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_ChD2WjD2tY.html
I think your comment is incredible. It shows a rare level of respect for music, yourself, and the whole of humanity in just a few words. Thank you for your inspirational comment
Your remark on how the sound of the vocals makes him accessible on a personal level is so profound! Based on that alone I have subscribed! Mark just sold his guitar collection at Christies in London for around $10 million, the funds of which will be donated to the teenage cancer fund! This man is a legend!
Welcome to Mark Knopfler’s guitar master class. This is simply the entrance exam, there’s a whole curriculum beyond this to explore. Enjoy earning your degree.
I can’t believe anyone in the world has never heard of the greatest guitarist of all times… and yes, there are better electric guitarists and electric solos, but Mark was a genius of the guitar, and his style is a different game. We all would like his touch, we all would like his sound.
He truly understands what music is for. To me for goat it's a coin flip between him and David Gilmour. I take Mark because Dire Straits is my favorite band.
No doubt he's a guitar genius, but if it's making a guitar perform miracles don't forget Richard Thompson. That man makes one guitar, be it electric or not, sound like a least 2 separate instruments and watching his fingers work is mesmerising. Totally blows me away every time. Saw him live a few weeks ago. 76 and still as good as ever.
The drummer's dad was in the audience for the first time, so the lead singer, Mark Knopfler, told him to go for it!!! One of the most spectacular live performances ever!!!🎶🎼🎵🥁🎹🎧🎸🎤🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Fun fact I didnt know. Cool 👍👍 When I was like 16-17 I wanted my hair to look like Terry’s so I let it grow and had curls made 😅 Let just say that I didnt quite match up 😂. But had it for like a year or 2. Damn I was a DS fan 😂🎸🙈
The Alchemy album is proberly the best album EVER made. I know every song, every little note and every little beat from that performance. Its ALL about the Music. No dancing or any other crap. Just the band and their songs ❤️❤️🇩🇰🇩🇰
As a guitarist you should know the greatest in the world. Prince was once asked “ what is it like to be the greatest guitarist in the world, he replied go ask Mark Knofler.”
Think you may be getting confused with the also misquoted belief that Eric Clapton was once asked what it is like to be the greatest guitarist in the world and he replied "I don't know, go ask Prince." Apparently, this never happened either.
It's also been said that a reporter asked Freddie Mercury what it was like to have the greatest voice in music and he said: "I don't know. Ask Steve Perry." Seems like it's a popular meme.
Agree. When I first bought and listened to Bob Dylan's 'Slow Train Coming' back in '82, I knew straight away that Knopfler was on guitar. Totally unique.
@@alainstasse4602dude! Came to the replies to mention this album myself. Im probably a bit younger than you as I still wasnt born in 1982, but when I first listened to slow train, I heard Knopfler straight away and that alone made the album even more awesome to me. I love this legend of a guitarist
Mark Knopfler is your favorite guitarist's favorite guitarist. The man is casually one of the greatest guitarists ever. Just doing things people who have been playing for decades can't replicate, and making it look effortless.
The expression towards the end solo... like "WTF bro, what is this? It's not normal or possible".... It made me laugh so hard looking at his face. He knows because he's a good guitarist and knows the amount of work that goes behind playing like that. Wonderful. It was one of the best "reaction videos" ever....
Hard to believe that he doesn't know that song. It is played on the radio very often. Unless one has never turned on the radio sitting in a car or never heard radio in general one should know it.
I'm 50 and never heard Marvin Gaye until I was an adult. My dad listened to classic county and I got into heavy metal in the early 80's, so it wasn't on my dial.. and I've had folks be shocked when I haven't heard some R&B hit. It's entirely possible to have not heard one song out of the thousands available.
@@Pcytripper I'm not outright saying "it's a lie" but man.... I don't listen to Metal at all... not a fan of any of that hard stuff..... but I know who Metallica is.... ya know? And I know "Enter Sandman" when I hear it. But I do realize some artists just fall through the cracks.... in Australia we have 2 artists that are way more beloved than AC/DC (Arguably our most famous export other than the Wiggles) but not many people know who they are.... even though I would say they are 2 of the best singers in the world....Enjoy Jimmy Barns and John Farhnam ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ihsfx1LuoKc.html
This makes my day! You have found a gem. What blows me away about this song is that like you said, Knopfler plays it totally clean. Not only that, he's on either the 2nd or 4th position on the strat's toggle switch, so he's even got a specific almost glassy, shimmery tone dialed in. But the killer is rather than playing the chords in their "normal" form, he's playing inversions of them. Same notes, but gives a slightly different voicing. I love this stuff! Hey Happy Thanksgiving!
Yes, his mixing the neck and middle pickup tone is a kind of a trademark of his. I think, he is a proof that the music is not in the effects, but is in the melody and the feeling of playing.
I don't know if this is true or not but I remember reading a story that in the early years Mark bought a cheap Strat copy with only two pick ups and the shifter broke off stuck, so he was playing permanently out of phase . Mark liked the sound so much he kept it on later, more pricey guitars
Yesssss. The voice as JUST another instrument! ❤ Your analysis and understanding are spot on! I’m 75. We have been so lucky to have so much brilliant music in our lives!!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 Warms my heart that you are seeing it!
Definitely no auto tune..😂 of course it’s hard to mimic the original recording and that is boring for musicians…but this live version is way to much monotone/talking. Must say though, I love the band and guitar excellence..top shelf.
Literally the definition of a band at the peak of their powers. If seen so many reaction videos on this song and I still go through the whole range of emotions every time - pathos, joy, euphoria. Incredible
Knopfler was originally a journalist which explains his sophisticated lyrics and self taught on the guitar which is amazing in itself. Brits just own music
Mark Knopfler is like a voodoo magic man on the strings. He just plays with a unique fingerstyle, and it's so clean, and his bends so hypnotic. He doesn't have to blow your brains out with distortion, he just coaxes it out, and your brain just gets dreamy and intoxicated and exits your skull willingly. It's great that the newer generations like you recognise such music from the argubly the best era of music 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s. Play with feel, soul, emotions
You are so right. It was played with passion and controlled by the band, not some promoter pushing repetitive pop songs with loop overs. Dire Straits "lived" their music, that's why it holds up today. Played with passion.
The first time my husband and I heard this song was in the car when we were newlyweds. We looked at each other and smiled and thought “This band is gonna be fun!” We raised our kids on Dire Straits and then Mark’s solo career and they have impeccable taste in music. He just recently sold a bunch of his favorite guitars and raised millions for charity. In an interview at that time he described the guitars like they’re people-his musical collaborators. Look it up!
Being a U.S.A.F. veteran of 20 years a feel in love with their song " Brothers In Arms". It was written for the British soldiers in their Falkland war.
Knopfler transcends rock. A true artist who has composed many movie soundtracks. A one of a kind guitarist who created a unique style. Good reaction Sebs.
You have to watch the movie Local Hero - Mark did the sound track. When I watched it in a cinema with a pal, we were the only ones who knew we were watching a comedy. We were laughing our socks off while everyone around was shushing us!!!
“Local Hero” is one of my favorite films, and Knopfler’s soundtrack is wonderful. Then he went on to do another stellar soundtrack for “The Princess Bride.” Other films he scored include “Comfort and Joy,” “Last Exit to Brooklyn,” and “Wag the Dog.” That’s quite a track record.
"This tennis player is the best guitar player I've ever seen!"😂...Dude, that is Mark Knoefler, one of the true greats, hands down. Few, if any, in the rock genre can make a guitar "cry and sing" like him...
What always blows me away with Knopfler is the way he can change the feel of his solos in his variations in live performances to make them feel so different with his energy levels. Guy was a madman.
Usually I hate people talking over music, but it is such a joy to see you discovering something we have listened to for many, many years. Especially, with you musically expertise.
i think this is the first reaction i've seen where the reactor not only appreciates what's being played, but is also enjoying it wholeheartedly, it was a joy seeing the joy on your face.
One of my favorite lines ever said by any RU-vid music reviewer is "Dude, this tennis player is the best guitarist I've ever seen."😂😂 I had the pleasure of actually meeting Mark Knopfler in the early 90's when my father made a lot of their equipment storage trunks and boxes for their U.S. tour in 1991+1992. he gave me a signed copy of their brother in arms record, and I still have it to this day. He is in my opinion one of the top 5 guitarists of all time, and I still love watching this performance.
You know I would have killed a man for somethşng like that, but as far as I have ever seen in my 49 years of life the people who listen to Dire Straits are kind and lobing people who wonçt hurt anybody! I am happy for you you had an experience with Mark, wonderful.
No. It was way before modern times that Silenus asked Dionysus "What is it like to be the greatest lyrist ever?" His reply was "I don't know. Go ask Pan."
He did the music score for Princess Bride. The first time I watched it and heard the first note, I knew it was him. You'll never watch that movie the same way from now on. Truly unmistakable!
As someone who has had guitars and other instruments around since childhood and grew up with Dire Straits it still thrills me to hear this again and to watch a new one enter into the sacred guitar realm of Mark Knopfler. Thanks 😊
Yeah Knopfler's trademark style is his ability to seamlessly combine rhythm and lead into one coherent unity. So smooth and pure and clean. Your appraisal of the musical style is very astute, and rather than just analyze it to death, you show your true appreciation for the music.... very much enjoyed the reaction 😺
You remind me of my brother. Not long after this performance was published, we were watching it. My brother was a guitarist and while we watched, he turned to look at me and said, "You realize what he is doing is not physically possible." And you are right. That performance was flawless. The drummer (Terry Williams) absolutely murdered it. I've heard it probably more than a thousand times (I'm an old lady) but that solo still gives me chills. I enjoyed your enjoyment of it. Thanks.
"I don't understand how a song can rock so freaking hard without distortion" 0 dude, you have missed out on a HUGE universe - a treasure trove of rock music!!! Like a lifetime supply!! Welcome to the clean sound of the guitar strings, without any electronic wizardly disguising their soul! Glad you've been enlightened! :D
Dude, Mark K was named one of the 5 TOP GUITARISTS in the World many many years ago. Where have you been? I’m happy you crawled out from under your rock!!! Yay!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I saw Dire Straits multiple times over the years and Mark's guitar playing raised the hairs on the back of my neck. Sultans of Swing Live is still one of the greatest live show experiences I ever had. Terry Williams on drums is also out of this world - as a professional photographer I had the honor of shooting Terry's portrait at his home nearly 40 years ago. I was a student in Swansea and after some investigative work, found where Terry lived, and literally knocked on his door and asked if we could arrange a shoot. You have to remember that at this time he was in one of the biggest rock bands in the world, and yet he didn't turn me away, instead arranging for me to go over later that week and giving me nearly two hours of his time. A true Gentleman in every sense of the word!
Mark Knopfler is a guitar legend. You've likely heard him before. Money for nothing is one of their best known. If you've ever watched The Princess Bride, he wrote and played the soundtrack for that.
Wow, how did I not know this?!?! I’ve seen that movie dozens of times and I just learned this? I’m going to watch it again just for the music. I’ve always loved Dire Straits. Bought their first album in 1980 with my baby sitting money.
@pamalicious8526 When you hear the guitar in the main theme, you can really hear it - it's unmistakably his sound. It's such a beautiful soundtrack. He's got the whole playlist on his RU-vid channel. It's perfection.
Knopfler is a beast, has always been a beast, and i love that people still find out about him as if he hasnt always been around being THE beast. Also the drummer is so underrated, actually slaping the living sh*t out of them drums, the bassplayer, second guitarist and keyboardguy equally as talented. Just an INSANE live performance and im 100% sure i wont see anything better than this one right here during my lifetime, note im just 35 but i just know it will never be topped.
Don't you just love the way Mark looks into the camera at the end while he's playing an incredible crescendo...and smiles into the camera as if what he's just done throughout the song was nothing to get too excited about. Just amazing.🙋♂
The funny part is that this was the first time their drummer had played in front of his Dad. So the band told him to go crazy and they were enjoying it with him! That's why they're laughing with each other!
Your logic seems pretty sound as I'm not that familiar with rock bands backstage. My experiences made me accept the story as possible. The fact that the drummer had been in dire straits less than a year when the video was recorded made it possible, at least that his dad hadn't seen him play with dire straits before. I've always been a blues music fan and so the idea of a band setting every second in stone and never changing it on the fly seems kind of sad. Pathetic even. Blues bands are not like this. They rehearse and practice, sure but I've seen duets switch verses, players move or extend or shorten solos and do all kinds of things. In the final analysis, i have no more reason to believe you than the previous place i got info. I'll find out for myself, just found a documentary about him called 'The Drummer in the Band' and a few other sources, not that it's truth or untruth matters to any one for any reason, rofl!!!
@@Barry41049well said sir, this tripe about mothers, fathers, uncles, aunties and pet dogs being in the audience adds nothing to brilliant performances, Terry Williams was on fire, like so many other times
@@Barry41049 I've noticed it too Barry, and thanks for your reply. I believe what you said, to be honest and true. I think the people who do these "add ons" do it entirely to boost their own ego's and the dopamine "likes", straight talking Barry, they're addicted to lying because the truth is not good enough on its own. I read the OP's reply to you, i found it wholly dishonest why would you repeat something you can't prove to be true? In any field of life, ? It was insulting to say the least. He repeated garbage without checking its veracity or who the source was. Worse, he didn't put a name to the source, thanks again and enjoy this fabulous performance
Hi Dad was Ron Williams from Swansea Wales. Terry was in so many local bands and his father worked in the clubs, so yes, he'd seen him plenty of times 😁
It is one of the biggest crimes in music history that Mark Knoppfler is so "tragically underrated"! He is an absolute guitar God. This magnificent performance demonstrates that beyond any doubt. The entire band are virtuoso level musicians, and the unadulterated joy that each band member displays is awe inspiring.
I think most people know of him quite well...more people should get a premium subscription to RU-vid...one can learn quite a lot about all musicians and bands...
He's rated and rewarded and has played and created wtth many major names. And he writes great lyrics too. Glad you've found him now you've a huge back catalogue to discpver.
When I was 18, my brother took me to an Eric Clapton concert at Royal Albert Hall. Mark Knopfler was on stage with him. As amazing it was to see ol "slow hand" live, I was utterly transfixed by Knopfler. Glorious!
They did that the other way around at IIRC the Princess Diana tribute concert. Dire Straits rolled out Clapton as their second guitar. I was never a huge Clapton fan but I remember on that performance he snapped a string at one point and just carried on playing around it, that's some talent.
This is one of the top live rock performances of all time. I love how he smiles like it's nothing while he absolutely shreds it. Your analysis is spot on.
My wife asks me every time I watch a reaction video to this song, why I'm watching it again. Easy. The reason is the look on your face from about the 14.00 min mark on. The look of joy and amazement. I love seeing other people get as much joy as I do from this performance.
Welcome to the world of realizing this 1985 live version of "Sultans of Swing" during the Alchemy Live tour is the greatest live performance of any song ever. Mark Knopfler is a genius and this song was WAY ahead of its time. It's by far my favorite Dire Straits song and my favorite live song.
I agree Comfortably Numb is a masterpiece , but if you wanna go perfection - Prince - Whilst my Guitar Gently Weeps - man, a Tele just isn't supposed to sound like that. @@Triton_Secure
I think your smile listening to that says it all! It always gives me happy memories listening to that full blast in my bedroom as a kid. Thanks for reviewing!
Note that guitar legend Chet Atkins heard Mark play and invited him to tour with him. Greatness recognizes greatness. They toured and recorded an album together.
Thanks for sharing that. I love learning uncommon info re great artists. For Mr Atkinson to support him is quite an accomplishment. Duh, right? lol. Anyway, thanks and Peace.
Dylan heard him play in LA and immediately chatted him up. A few years later they were recording a Dylan album together, with some of Dylan's most loved songs. Find "Blind Willie McTell". Mark plays 12-string on that. Get the demo, not the later album version.
Atkins bestowed the title ‘Certified Guitar Picker’ on him, a title he only bestowed on three guitarists in his life. IMO, he set Mark up to succeed him in country and pop as the reigning guitar legend in Nashville.
I was at this, or one of the other venues on this Dire Straits tour in the UK - one of the best live performances I have ever seen, incredible guitar work. Knopfler was phenomenal.
One of the pleasures of watching a live performance is seeing the interactions of the musicians. The eye contact between the guitarists is wonderful and I love how often they are smiling. They know they are great and enjoy it as much as we do.
Drummer here is Terry Williams. Knopfler once called him the greatest rock and roll drummer live. You just saw and heard why. Had great fun waiting to see your reaction to the long outro. :)
Yes, I like this man's reactions to real music. So many other reactions are just so shallow and "wow", like, "we're young and know and have the best". No you don't dearies. We ancients (sorry, my bones are sore today) grew up with this as the soundtracks to our lives. It's great to see one musician appreciate others. Let's hope he finds lots more 😊
Yes, I love how "reaction videos" puts people on new (for them) music and artists! It's a trend I really love seeing 😊 plus it's a nice feeling to see them react to such fantastic music and watch together with them ❤
Nah, if I find out that a grown adult who had been playing since they were 8 hasn't heard of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler before I'm going to give them shit. But, it's all in good fun and at the same time I'm stupidly excited for them and the amazing journey that they just took the first step of!
Sultans of Swing were a pub band. Mark was near that location on a wet rainy night and went into the pub out of the rain. There were not many people inside, except for a few young rockers in a corner. The band were playing jazz double 4 time to the small audience. Mark later took the memories of the event, wrote the song, and the Sultans of Swing were reborn..
Growing up in the 1980-90 in Europe (I'm from Switzerland) there's no way you wouldn't have heard of Dire Straits. They were immensly popular here and Sultans of Swing was played everywhere. I had the chance to see them live in concert twice in France in the 90's and I'll always be thankful to my father for taking me with him to see them. This is part of my life's soundtrack for ever and I'll never get bored, just such great songwriting and musicianship. Glad you like them!
I love it when youngsters who've been listening to music factory music since they first started listening turn on to the old geezers and how good they were and how good the music was. Dire Straits' music, like the Beatles", Stones" etc will last a very long time.
Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits merit a deep dive. There is just so much there, so many more stories to be told in so many ways. His music is a gift to humanity and I listened to it in high school and to this day. You will hear jazz, folk, bits of blues, classical, film themes, and more. What a journey are entering into.
Mark Knopfler just blew the doors off the hinges with his mastery of the instrument and his melodic understanding. He has a new album that just dropped - One Deep River. These days he makes fewer moves, yet they are all EXACTLY where they should be. He is a humble and intentional artist with an extraordinary songbook to his name. 💜👏👏
Dire Straits is such a tight band. When they hit in the late 70s early 80s, Mark Knopfler's guitar style knocked people back. His style was so unique and he's a fantastic songwriter as well.
This is the best rendition of any song ever. That crescendo at the end is just orgasmic. The Alchemy Live album which this song is featured on is an absolute classic and you are quite right, this just doesn't happen in music now!
I’m so glad I found your channel tonight. I’ve been binge watching. I was born in 1965 and I wish everybody would listen to and appreciate the amazing music and musicians we grew up with.
One thing that has always impressed me about Mark is that he doesn't have to constantly look down to see what his fingers are doing, like a lot of guitarists do. He is at one with his instrument, it's part of him, he knows what to do, how to do it and when. Just amazing
Most of the main (and spine tingling) lead from 11:00 ish he rarely looks down. One of the most amazing guitar solos of all time and he just bangs it out like he's scratching his nose or something :D true talent
@@boomer1981abc thats also a bad thing. I went to see Black sabbath with all the best OG members... only entertainer was Ozzy. Others ripped epic solos etc, but looked like they just wanted to get off the stage. Really shifted the whole mood of the audience.
@@lknowledge ah i meant it as in it was so effortless for him. He put on a great show, Telegraph road blew the roof off the place. You could tell he was vibing but he made it look so easy. It was a great show 🤙
I've been listening this masterpiece for more than 30 years now.. And to this day, for me, it's still one of the best guitar solos ever played. It's one of the few that made me pick a guitar one day and start learning how to play it !
When people do these “first time listens” to songs that I listened to endlessly and which defined my whole life I always have three reactions: 1. Hope in young people 2. Envy of hearing song for first time 3. I’m getting old
Described by Classic Rock as a virtuoso, Knopfler is a fingerstyle guitarist and was ranked 27th on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". With Dire Straits, Knopfler sold between 100 and 120 million records. A four-time Grammy Award winner, Knopfler is the recipient of the Edison Award, the Steiger Award and the Ivor Novello Award, as well as holding three honorary doctorate degrees in music from universities in the United Kingdom. Knopfler was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Dire Straits in 2018.Mark Freuder Knopfler OBE (born 12 August 1949) is a British guitarist, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He was the lead guitarist, singer and songwriter of the rock band Dire Straits. He pursued a solo career after the band first dissolved in 1988. Dire Straits reunited in 1990, but dissolved again in 1995. He is now an independent solo artist. Knopfler was born in Glasgow and raised in Blyth, near Newcastle. After graduating from the University of Leeds and working for three years as a college lecturer, Knopfler co-founded Dire Straits with his younger brother, David Knopfler. The band recorded six albums, including Brothers in Arms (1985), one of the best-selling albums in history. After they disbanded in 1995, Knopfler began a solo career, and has produced nine solo albums. He has composed and produced film scores for nine films, including Local Hero (1983), Cal (1984), The Princess Bride (1987), Wag the Dog (1997) and Altamira (2016). He has produced albums for Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, and Randy Newman. Peace out.
100% agree 👍 I was 5 when I first really heard them , my old man had them on at a party in the house with his mates , at aged 7 I had the white head band on and was singing there songs at my parents house party's 😂, fantastic memories ❤️ I'm 48 now and I still get reminded of them time's when I bump into his mates
I love how Mark changes the lyrics for all his songs. Each live performance has different added lyrics. Love it. Started listening to DIre Straits with Money for Nothing. They are soooo much more than that 80s MTV music. And Mark is still going today. Love his music.
I feel privileged to share your first experience with this amazing band; and I actually learned something new about this song, which I’ve listened to for years. So thank you for that. But I have to quibble with you about the lyrics not really contributing to the song. Mark Knopfler - the “tennis player” - is a gifted and intelligent lyricist, as well as a genius guitarist. It’s hard to hear in this video, since the instrumentals are the focus, but “Sultans of Swing” is a beautiful work of poetry. The song was inspired by Knopfler seeing a Dixieland jazz band playing to small, mostly indifferent audience - including “a crowd of young boys, fooling around in a corner, dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles” - in a pub in South London. It’s an homage to garage bands and amateur rockers, the working-stiff musicians who spend their weekends playing bars for fifty bucks and a round of beer; who will never have stadium shows or tour buses, who play out of passion and a love for the music. For another example of Knopfler’s brilliance as a lyricist, check out his song “Romeo and Juliet” - you’ll see why he’s the master of restrained passion.
I totally agree with you. "The dice were loaded from the start..." a most beautiful rendition of the tragic couple. "Telegraph Road" is another one and "In the gallery" - I am purely thinking of the lyrics here. Not to ignore "The Man's Too Strong".
