Southwest Research Institute:
In 2005, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution began an upgrade to the Alvin submersible, to allow it to dive deeper and reach 98 percent of the ocean floor. Southwest Research Institute designed and managed the fabrication and testing of Alvin's new titanium personnel sphere, which was considered among the most challenging aspects of the upgrade, because it not only had to withstand higher pressures, but also needed to fit existing Alvin transport and handling infrastructure.
