@quad849No, not to control platforms whose operation poses a safety critical risk to life - they certainly don’t. I am a logistics officer in the navy and I trained as a system safety engineer in order to write safety cases for information systems that were relevant to safety critical activities, such as engineering, maintenance management and platform configuration. Using COTS products under these conditions would never be considered ALARP. That why Rush never sought civilian accreditation. He knew he couldn’t get this signed off. So he went ahead regardless. Just stop and think about it. If it was just a case of swapping Logitech controllers out on complex military vehicles, aircraft etc, then the military would just buy and replace. They don’t. They design and engineer assets to perform under the most highly testing conditions, heat, cold, gravitational forces, acceleration, deceleration, high and low pressures. These items are going to be put to some incredibly tough use, so each component’s cost is reflective of all the testing and certification that assures its function. You don’t just pop a few notes on the counter and walk off with a video games controller from a shop to control a submarine. Not unless you want to kill somebody. Oh wait, he already did.

Exactly. If memory serves (and it usually does), the CEO of Ocean Gate hired a retired USN submariner to examine the submersible and provide input on its design. Apparently, this submariner had 40-45 items that needed to be either added or changed to make this safe. The CEO scoffed at him, saying something derogatory about middle-aged white men. None of the indicated changes were ever made. The rest (or should I say, what is left) is history.

The fact that they forgot that even a magnificent ship such as Titanic lost many lives because of its careless safety measures then and now a submersible visiting the same shipwreck with its own careless safety measures lost innocent lives says we haven't learnt anything from the past.😢😢

For $250,000, you could have 10 wonderful foreign vacations for two. It's so weird that people chose to spend it on sitting in a cold, cramped tube looking at scrap metal on the bottom of the ocean. The web says the whole business took 10 days, and the actual dives lasted 10 hours. Who wants to sit around on a rocking ship in the middle of nowhere for that long? As for the time in the tube, a 10-hour flight in economy class is miserable, and economy class is a lot more comfortable than this sub was.

Because they had to view the Titanic via a laptop giving them a feed from a camera, I could have made a large, uncomfortable cardboard box and charged people excessive amounts of money to sit in the box and watch footage from the wreck. 100% safer than anything Stockton Rush built.
