Always Pan Pro Review: Decent Nonstick, Terrible Quality Control

We've reviewed every single version of Our Place's flagship Always Pan over the past 4 years and this is definitely the best one yet - though it's worth noting that the bar is in hell.
That new titanium surface does release food pretty easily, but some confusing design, manufacturing, and marketing decisions hinder what could be a decent pan. Then there's the $200 price point.
It's a pass from me, but if you've tried it out and want to put in your two cents, go add a review over on cultflav.com!

@@cultflavWould you happen to know if they are free from lead, cadmium, PFAS, PFOA, and PTFE ? Thanks
@cultflav
@cultflav 3 дня назад
That's a very specific list... where did you come up with that? Lead and PFOA are both illegal to add to cookware and therefore aren't likely to be found in any NEW cookware. PTFE and PFOA would both be classified as PFAS, which this does not contain. Cadmium is rarely found outside of colored enamel glazes, which this also doesn't contain.

I locked eyes on a V2 always pan at the mall today and a few hours later was hit with a Facebook ad for the titanium version. Shit looked sketchy so I went searching for reviews. Yours seems to be the only genuine one, very informative and funny too. Thanks Cult Flav!

I follow you guys on TikTok and just found you here. Once again, you saved me from being sucked into slick (pun intended) pan marketing! I am shocked to find that such practical, unbiased, and quality reviews don't command a larger audience here though. You simply don't have the following you deserve based on your information and effort - plus, I just like the two of you. My wife has a background in home goods manufacturing, product design, and safety testing (nothing kitchen related - but everything else from alarm clocks with sunlight lamps to trigger point massagers, and vacuums) and I keep telling her people could really benefit from the trade secrets she's learned to help them buy quality products and save money, but she always says people wouldn't be interested in a straight forward science based review (which is how I view your reviews), all they want is short attention span flashy presentations. I guess maybe she's right, but things are so expensive these days; knowing how to make wise buying decisions can help take some of that sting out. Anyway, sorry for the novel, I just wanted to let you know I appreciate what you guys put into the world and I hope one day soon you get to celebrate your millionth subscriber!

I've been watching reviews on this pan and this was the first channel to say that there actually IS a coating, which it does. Everyone else is going off the marketing claim that there is no coating. So thank you.
@cultflav
@cultflav 3 месяца назад
I've now (just this morning) gotten a response from their team and they make a very pedantic claim that it's not a coating simply because it's not applied, it's created by a thermal process that causes the titanium to react with the air creating a layer of titanium oxide. I would still contend that an additional layer that *coats the surface* is, in fact, a coating.
@koko4620
@koko4620 2 месяца назад
@@cultflav while it is by technical definition a coating, it would be nitpicking to toss it in the same catagory of PAN coatings like nonstick Teflon. Titanium dioxide forming from treating titanium is still far from the lack of durability of traditional non-stick. Just playing devil's advocate, we'll still have to see long term it's true durability
@cultflav
@cultflav 2 месяца назад
@koko4620 eh, if they're pedantic about it for marketing purposes and the surface is covered in another material, I certainly feel comfortable saying it's coated by it bc that surface is fully (and easily) removable. Also it's just such silly marketing... 🤷‍♂️ In good news, I've gotten a lot more info from the Our Place team and put this pan to a few more tests with very interesting results (like removing said "coating"). Filming the follow-up now, should be out in the next couple weeks!

Thank you for putting in an actual 0. I love that you use all the numbers, and don't automatically give something 5 points for being an object that exists. It really helps. I'm sad, though, that Always are going to just keep on making these things and influencers will keep talking about them and using them in their videos. I'm also going to go back and find out what you dislike about that innocent spatula, because while I'm happy to think that the holder on the handle that only works with that specific spatula is absolutely silly, I don't really follow what's wrong with the spatula itself other than its absolute lack of need to exist and I'm sure it costs too much to replace it too.
@cultflav
@cultflav 3 месяца назад
It's just a very short-handled low-quality spatula with a hole in the middle. It has no valid reason to exist bc you can buy better ones for a couple bucks.

Good review. The best feature of this pan is that it has welded handles; no rivets. It's amazing to me how many premium brands of cookware use rivets, which are unsanitary in practice. One final point: titanium dioxide, which is used as a white paint pigment (among other things) is NOT the same as titanium oxide. This pan looks like it was coated in a plating process, and then abrasively relieved on the high faces of the hexes. Some pans, like Heston, use vacuum-deposited titanium -chromium alloy in their process, not oxides, which should be superior. At this price point, this pan may also have received it's surface in a vacuum-dep process, but you are correct that it was applied to flat sheet, then stamped into the pan shape. Keep up the good work!
@cultflav
@cultflav 3 месяца назад
Based on the patent spec, it looks like thermal curing was required for the coating, so my best guess was molding/3d printing the pattern + bake + abrasion of the grid - hard to know for sure without a design patent, which I couldn't find. I did find that titanium dioxide was referred to as "titanium (IV) oxide" and may have misunderstood the differentiation. Regardless, always appreciate a nuanced critique 🤝
@kolbypham7318
@kolbypham7318 3 месяца назад
Chemistry wise, you're correct that titanium 4 oxide is literally the same as titanium dioxide. Oxygen's charge is -2 so 2 oxygens are bonded to a +4 titanium, hence titanium dioxide. So now I'm even more confused than before about the marketing of this coating that really is no different (chemically) than mineral sunscreens. Of course application and dosage can make a big difference.@@cultflav

Companies that disable comments are a HUGE red flag for me. They actually only make things worse for themselves by doing that IMO. Kind of like they are publicly confirming that they are worried about their own product’s quality. I’d think If they allowed comments even if every single one was bad, a lot of customers would just assume many are from competitors. it’s the nature of people when they want something. They tend to shut off common sense.

So the challenge is that no cookware actually contains toxins which are technically "antigenic poisons produced by plants or animals". All cookware can be harmful depending on how it's used, and lots of production is harmful in itself. Nonstick tends to be more likely to be harmful because of its production requirements and its frequency of misuse. There's nuance here that just doesn't make for good marketing.

@cultflav
@cultflav 2 месяца назад
Nickel isn't toxic at high temps necessarily. It requires leaching in large amounts to become toxic and that requires high acidity over a very long time to be impactful.Titanium is more stable up to way higher temps than used for cooking in its raw form and is far more stable and thus not a concern (afaict) in this titanium nitride form.

What material is the healthiest to cook with?
@cultflav
@cultflav 24 дня назад
Going to do a video on this because the answer is complex. No material is inherently healthy and it almost always depends on the substance being cooked and the method of cooking be applied to determine whether a piece of cookware is harmful or not.
@somnia3423
@somnia3423 10 дней назад
A no risk material is cast iron and stainless steel
@cultflav
@cultflav 9 дней назад
Technically not zero - but closer to zero, yes. Specific cookware, like anything, can't be "healthy" on its own. You can use it in non-harmful ways, but you can also misuse it and cause harm. E.g. cooking an acidic food for long enough with stainless steel or cast iron can leach enough nickel/iron to exceed intake levels and trigger sensitivities for people.
