The fact the pan is not oven safe is a testament to the shortcuts they must have taken. I worked in a kitchenware store and most pans, including the cheap ones, were oven safe to about 350F. They really poured everything into marketing huh

@Petitfleur_

To be fair, most metal pans (like the ones that are all metal with a metal handle as well) also do not have any insulation on the handles & you have to use a pot holder or a towel when you’re touching the handles. I remember a friend growing up had all metal pots & pans while we had nonstick ones with the like, black plastic (I guess?) handles, & every time we cooked anything at her house I’d burn the shit out of my hands because I never remembered their pans had handles that got hot. I have no idea why metal pans are like that but uh, yeah apparently it’s a thing?
@thomasdegroat6039
@thomasdegroat6039 3 года назад
Especially since it can’t go in the oven anyway! Usually when they don’t put insulation, the material of the pan makes it able to be put in the oven, but not this pan! There’s no reason they couldn’t put some sort of insulation on the handle and lid top.

A saucepan is very different from a skillet/frying pan tho. the former is for boiling, the latter is for baking/frying/searing. $145 and you can't touch one of the handles when you're using it, especially since it's so heavy? Also, using only one pan for everything can limit the variety of things you can cook. For example, you need a pan AND a pot when making risotto. And I can't help but feel that the pasta dish you made could have been made faster if you just had a separate pot for the pasta while you cooked the chicken. I mean, I guess it’s all in one and she’s testing that, but who cooks shells like this whether it’s got a steamer/strainer tray? Who cooks the chicken, cleans the pan to make pasta, then cooks the vegetables??? Just because every house has a kitchen doesn’t mean everyone in it can cook: many people just reheat things or cook from the freezer or jars. As Marco Pierre White says, “cooking is a philosophy, unless it’s pastry and then it’s chemistry.” The honest truth is that cooking is an art and a skill that not all have or choose to develop. If you can cook, you’ve got a gift you can share with the people you care for, but don’t think that everyone can do it, you know?

"Wait-listed" to me either means it's going to take forever to get here and by the time it does I probably won't even want it anymore, or "we suck at meeting our production quotas". Hey Amanda ~ I'm pretty sure that the scrapes and defects are basically the coating not being perfectly set, which sounds about right since these pans are likely being rushed through production. Theoretically the ceramic coating should be even but it's something that's hard to pull off literally every time, ceramics are very finnicky like that and people don't realize that there's a good chance what you make will end up not perfect in the end, so ceramic coatings can be hard to manufacture- that's why it's so costly. But they sent you a messed up pan for 145$ so lol they're not doing it right.

Oven mitts shouldn't usually be used for work on a pan. If the mitt gets water or oil on it, you're gonna have a really bad time. That and they don't grip heavy pans well. I learned that the hard way. When I was first learning to cook, I used a mitt with my heavy cast iron pan, and when I went to drain the water into the sink, the pan handle slipped in my mitt and the whole thing rotated. I had a large second degree burn on one of my legs from it. They make pan handle covers for hot handles. They're tight to the handle and they don't slip as easily. Oh, and I'd recommend using a pair of tongs and a silicone mitt to grab the basket. Those silicone mitts don't grip handles very well, but they're great to grab baking trays and roasting pans and stuff.

I’ve since bought a few more as gifts and everyone I’ve gifted it to loves it too. Whether or not you get it is your choice, but I absolutely love mine!

Ceramic coated pans in general don’t last over time. I’ve bought many and been disappointed by all. The only one is the La Cruset, which are oven safe. If you’re willing to spend $145 on a pan that can’t go in the oven and the ceramic chips in a few months, then get the following pans/ A cast iron A La Cruset dutch oven - I have a smaller one Is what I use daily. I got it during a Black Friday Silicon spatula and spoons. Had both of them for 8 years.

Is it a cast iron skillet (enameled?) - that would explain the weight. Also, the fact that the handle is built into the body of the pan (as opposed to being affixed on to it) would explain why it got so hot. It also suggests to me, again, this is made of iron. With enamelware, it definitely possible to get some sticking - the fact that it’s chipping is a huge red flag. The price tag of better enameled cast iron (Le Crueset and Staub) are also pricey, but they would never be sent to you chipped 😵.

Just FYI, the wood we use in kitchen goods--like pine, oak, and maple--is antimicrobial (it's why we traditionally see it in cutting boards). The University of Wisconsin deposited bacteria on plastic and wooden cutting boards and found that 99.9% of bacteria on the wooden board died within minutes, and the remaining bacteria died overnight (the board/room were left at room temperature). The plastic board was almost entirely unaffected, and still covered in bacteria the next morning.

Unrelated to the pan discourse, but don’t put oil in your pasta water! Just liberally salt the water with some kosher salt. Oil prevents sauce from sticking to the pasta.

Different pastas have different instructions. I always follow whatever they say! Some pastas call for oil and not salt. Some call for salt water and no oil. I will say that as far as I know, even when just using cheapo barilla dry pasta, you wanna just salt the water a bit, as the general rule, but don't add oil unless instructed. No pasta cooks well in plain water. (And save a tiny bit of the pasta water to add in if necessary to make your pasta stick to your sauce)

@@talloncusack All pasta cooks fine in plain water. I've been an adult probably longer than you've been alive, and cooking pasta for longer. Cheap pasta, gourmet pasta, it all cooks just fine without salt. Salt does nothing more than make a home-cook feel like they're doing something more than they are, just like how cake mixes can put in dry egg and an oil (like Bisquik), but they found decades ago that housewives were more likely to buy a boxed mix if they felt they were doing something more than opening a box and adding water. The same goes for pasta. I guarantee you if I made you pasta using oil, using salt, and using plain water, you wouldn't know which is which unless you used sauce and it slipped off a bit from the oil.

@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria Are you somehow forgetting that salt makes things...salty? And thats why we salt the pasta water? I'd rather have my pasta be thoroughly and evenly salted than sprinkling on salt at the end. Not to mention if you use the pasta water in your sauce or whatever.

Maybe I’m an unpopular opinion here, but I bought mine on sale & I absolutely love it. As someone who primarily used Cast Iron before this, I find it to be much lighter than most of my other pans. I can use it in so many ways & it makes cooking a lot easier most nights because we can use one instrument for everything. I don’t use the utensils that came with the pan since we already as so many & I’m use to my pans (like cast iron) having hot handles, so using a towel to move something is pretty normal for me. My boyfriend and I are really big on cooking & love our Always Pan a lot. It’s pretty perfect for us ~

Everything you said about that 'Always pan' was right; your kitchen alternatives, excellent. I'd never spend that much on a pan like that. Instead I've a good set of pans, some sharp and trusty kitchen knives and a decent chopping block. Your culinary knowledge is tops; like mine. Originally I saw that pan advertised on YT. They can keep it! Many thanks for your review! Best, Wendi UK 🌻

My mom ordered this pan for me in November for Xmas, and she just received it last week. Tonight is my first night trying out the pan, so it's pretty funny you just uploaded this! Mine also came with multiple chips and nicks on a few different sides of the pan (looked really similar to yours), kind of a disappointment considering it took so long to get here and is so expensive but I hope it's just aesthetic and won't affect the integrity of the pan at all. Appreciated your review! I know that I definitely wouldn't have bought it for myself, but as a Xmas present I don't feel too bad about it.

in re: wood - since they're after replacing a bunch of stuff in the kitchen, I have no idea why they wouldn't do a dishwasher safe bamboo option, which would be much easier to sanitize. Also, for this price point, you can get a Le Creuset skillet, which would be a way better investment (and oven safe).
