You can't buy genius like this. Billionaires in the world should bow to this soundtrack...something real. This reaches deep inside, intangible. Brilliant work this score; the soundtrack, brilliant move too. Just wow. Thanks for your mix and for your posting this. I'm an old guy and I still cry every time I hear this. And I was a professional musician. This stuff is just beyond. Peace out....
Lovely! I’m a retired studio singer. What instrument do you play? In my career I had the honor of working several times with John Williams, even going back to when he was known as Johnny
Mr Williams is well known in composing specific themes for lead female characters from the movies he worked in.Here we can listen to Dorinda's solo flight. In Raiders Of The Lost Ark we have Marion's theme.Lois' theme from Superman. And Princess Leia has her own theme too.
Every time I listen to this and I have it on DVD and cassette I'm reminded of my first love lost but never forgotten!! Beth I love you! Always and Forwer 😍
Popeth, it rather consummately captures the concept of loving someone enough TO let go. Something that takes as much courage to do as the move that cost the main character his life in the first place. N'ere let-go of that romanticism and idealism, Popeth.
The whole sequence, from the plane clearing the forest fire's smoke to the end on the landing strip, is the best part of the movie. Spielberg has the touch -- two things always give me goosebumps: the light on Pete's hand as he extends it to Dorinda, and the two of them floating up to the light from the darkness of the lake. And Pete smiling, then turning around as the movie and music come to their conclusion.
Look for James Thatcher's interview with Sarah Willis, he tells an anecdote of this solo. Apparently, Williams wrote it for the horn, but had it ready for flute just in case. It's told in a very funny way, so you must watch the interview.
No live performances for this movie. Shame. I’ve included this recording in my playlist, John Williams Retrospective. Check it out. It even includes some very early Johnny Williams, “Lost in Space”, etc.
OM Goodness !!!! James Thatcher's solo horn is AMAZING- so smooth, full and clear in the stratospheric range. Another triumph for Williams and Thatcher.
Betcha Thatcher doesn't rely on a triple or one of the other abortions the horn makers have come up so that players don't need to practice the high range of their horns...it pains me, a retired pro horn player to think that practice, practice, practice has gone out of vogue, now all they need is a triple to reach all those notes an octave above middle C!
John Williams captures the breathtaking range of human experience, from unbearable heartbreak to triumphs of the spirit. His music transports us to extraordinary places, a big part of the magic of moviemaking. This movie's ending is etched into my mind and heart largely from the perfect pairing of Williams' music with the heartwarming drama onscreen. (I actually like this soundtrack more than those from Spielberg's more famous films.)

@@nstix2009xitsn I've decided to surrender to the proper authorities. And I will ask for the mercy of the judge. It was just that I saw the other RU-vid video with the last 6 minutes of the movie and was overwhelmed with emotion. Here that sequence begins at 12:23 -- I cannot listen to that without losing it. By the time Richard Dreyfuss flashes that last big smile... it's all over for me.
Beautiful film...one of the best I've ever seen...and I loved the music also...very fitting. It's a timeless film that deals with death, mourning, and the afterlife...it's sad, but uplifting also, not depressing.
I was lucky enough to win tickets plus hotel stay in London for the Royal Film Performance. A wonderful human film, not a cynical film which is why it never got the praise it deserved.
I wish for all of you to hear Dorinda's Solo Flight rearranged by Williams on another album of his. It's extracted and re orchestrated. The glock with its speckled well- placed notes... with delicate limited glissandi in the harp, the vibes w motor on...the horn solo...it sounds like a slight puff breathed upon a dandelion globe, the seeds of which are carried, cascading upon the lilt of a breeze. The effect sounds completely ad libbed but it's not. It's quietly stunning...ghastly almost. It's on another album by Williams. You will never be the same after one listen. I promise you.
I love this movie and soundtrack! I saw it when it came out in 88 or 89 and I thought, 50 year old planes in the woods? Sign me up! I bought the movie and soundtrack as soon as I could. As an added bonus I now have the John Goodman umbrella from the movie; bought from the Grass Valley airport manager ( can't thank him enough) it's one of my most prized possessions in my hangar, most people don't get the cartoon painted on it. The A-26 is for sale too, but I can't afford the fuel burn! I tried to send a picture of it to Spielberg, and John Goodman's websites but no answer. I guess that movie was underrated for them as well, but what a great cast!
And one more thing, I hope to become as good a score composer as John Williams, or James Horner (score composer of "Willow," even though I think it was a score that Willams would do because it reminded me of Star Wars--the film came from the same company, Lucasfilm, Ltd., obviously--I know that) for that matter. I'm in film school right now, but I would like to direct and score films someday, period.
@punish907 hey there. thanks for your very kind comment! i am using the simply windows movie maker for my videos. and best wishes for the new year to you! :-)
hey there! i think i wont upload the willow soundtrack suite.i did but it got deleted from sony music i think.if you like the willow score you should listen to some orchestral mozart pieces!he really used A LOT of them for willow, the great main/hero theme is a 1:1 copy of a motif mozart wrote. its hard to get close to williams genius.i'd love to write music for films someday too but as williams?3 months for a completed orchestral score written by pencil (and sometimes) w.o. using the piano? :)
@johnwilliamsfan786 yes, i have tried but i think i need more time to know this program and it's functions...WMM is not the best program to mix music but for my makings it's enough..at the moment ;-)
Hanks would’ve been a little young here and probably wouldn’t have fit the role very well. Pete was supposed to be a cocky yet experienced pilot in the movie.
NO WAY. Richard is the BEST THING ABOUT THIS FILM. (It's a gorgeous film. Weirdly I think the chemistry between Holly and Richard really is something special in it. Akin to Tom and Meg... with an edge!)
