Always WANTED a Jaguar XKR, but is the Supercharged V8 X100 XK8 actually any good?

You mention the horseshoe-shaped design of the dash, but in fact the shape is intended to replicate the shape of the wings of the WWII Supermarine Spitfire, which was made in the same factory at Castle Bromwich, which later became the assembly line for Jaguar cars. A nice nod to the heritage for the factory and the workers who built the Spitfire.

I've got one (XKR convertible 2003 model) and I ADORE it. It's the most beautiful motor in the world! Apparently, the rear seats mean that the insurance costs are lower, as the car is classed as a 4-seater and not a 2-seater sports car.

Thanks for the comment, I am glad you enjoyed the video (almost as much as I did making it!)). The X150 XKR is a decent blend of the ZT260 and TF; you exchanged a V8 and a sports car for a V8 GT car... very nice! Thanks for watching the video, I appreciate the support.

We bought a 2000 XKR coupe after a deal on an E-Type fell through. In hindsight we ended up with a much more practical car for a fraction of the price of an E-Type. The XKR is just as beautiful as the E-Type but does not have the same charisma. We deliberately sought a X100 version with the 3 dials. Our car was sold with the R-Performance pack of Brembo brakes & 20" Detroit wheels. We have 3 other Jags; a MkV, a Mk2 & a X300 4.0 Sport. The Mk2 is a "keeper" as it is a rally modified 3.8 MOD in my husband's favourite Cotswold Blue. The XKR is our next favourite car & is brought out when the weather is too hot for the Mk2.

Thanks for the comment and for sharing details of your Jaguar collection, which sounds amazing. The X100 XK has some many styling cues from the E-Type and, as you say, it's a much more practical and usable car. Thanks for watching my video, I hope you enjoyed it.

I recently bought a 2006 XKR-S convertible, with the old body styling like in this video. Black outside, two-tone red trim on white inside (a blessing when driving with the top down in Texas). I think it puts out about 420hp. A fantastic car to drive. Holds a smooth, effortless 110mph on a straight road, almost like flying a plane. Steering is on the heavy side and takes some physical effort, but I love driving it on road trips when I want to relax.

Being a massive Ford fan I can’t wait to see the finished Sierra Sapphire Cosworth. Driven a few but sadly never owned one. The one that got away so to speak. Thanks for the comment Adrian and for following the Sierra restoration - sorry there's not been anything on it for a couple of months, it is as annoying for me as I know it is for everyone watching (which I really appreciate). I had a message yesterday from the garage where the electrics are being done to say they will be finished by 01-October. Car will then be coming back to me for the interior refit and shake down... I cannot wait and promise I'll put more content out then. Thanks both for your patience and for watching my video on the XKR. 👍

My Pacific Blue 2000 W reg XKR Convertible was fitted with BBS wheels from new, and a jaguar car phone! It has just under 100k on the clock. Being a Yorkshire car it suffered from rust and suspension gremlins but these were sorted before I bought it. I paid top dollar at 11k 6 years ago but my local mechanic agrees that I have "a good one!" Apart from odds and sods including plugs and coil packs it has done me proud,,,, touch wood!

It has been perfect, nock on wood, the past 3 years.... It is a pleasure to drive. And I probably will never sell it.❤..... The biggest thing is finding one without any rust. From there, anything else is fixable..... I'm definitely glad I bought a 2001 and stayed away from the earlier Models do to the engine problems

Either you are mistaken or I am (it’s probably me) but I’ve read and been told by several people, apparently in the know (mechanics)that the platform and motor for the XK8 is the same as for the 2002 Thunderbird. I own both an 8 and a Thunderbird, and they seem similar, at least in size and engine response, but my Jag handles better. Im a Jag guy having been one from 1967 til now. My father, another car guy, bought a 67 E-type new and I stole it every chance I got. I’ve now had two XJ6s and my 8 and am contemplating buying an XJS, which will torture me Im sure.

The reason it doesn't feel as fast as you're s type is a couple of reasons, the bigger wheels have messed up the final drive ratio making the gearing longer and the s-type being a 4.2 having more hp and a 6 speed closer ratio gearbox with the correct size wheels 😉

These have exact the same problems as the XJ8 with the same engine...like busting pipes in the engine valley and failing thermostat towers. But those are easy to repair, actually. Great car to "slide" through the landscape. If you want a sportscar - look somewhere else. That said...original body parts are getting harder to get. Better not to break anything in that department. The xor is actually not necessary to enjoy the ride. The base model is totally sufficient.

Would be interesting to tell how much stuff is when it goes wrong! Big bills are subjective! I want an xkr, as I know if I bought the xk8, I'd be annoyed I don't have the supercharged whine! But how much money is big? £500? £1000? £5000?
@cornishcarcollectors

Thanks for the comment Terry and good luck with your purchase. I do know what you mean about buying a nice XK8 but not being entirely happy as you know you are missing a supercharger... having said that though, the XK8 in standard form is a stunning car. On my videos I only really feature my experiences with the cars as well as some history. As I did not own this XKR I did not have any repair bills to pay, so difficult for me to personally comment on running costs; however, Nikasil coating issues, gearbox issues, roof repairs and a few other jobs can easily stray into the thousands of pounds. Thank you for watching.

Or a black xkr, 127k clearly had an owner who waited for the mot for someone to tell him stuff needs replacing! Probably best to avoid a car like that, but it's black, 4.2. Xkr! My heart always wins, but I'm 48 and about time I grew up and listened to my head!!!!!

Best wheels, worst color, exhaust tips wrong for the year. Otherwise, great car! - I have a 2006 XKR Victory Edition convertible in Jaguar Racing Green. Unfortunately, not the BBS wheels.

Thanks for the comment and I agree these are the best wheels. Exhausts are a bit tacky, but I do disagree on the colour as I happen to this the XK looks good in red. If you like XKR Jaguars then please do stay tuned to the Channel as I've more to come over the next couple of months! Thanks for watching and keep enjoying your XKR.

My wife’s MG RV8 DOES sound better than my XKR

Thanks for the comment. I adore the RV8, stunning car. An XKR and RV8 is a nice pair of cars; I take it you use the MG on nice days? Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed the video.

@@cornishcarcollectors It’s the usual really. We try not to take either out in bad weather, but really they need to be driven. Obviously, the MG benefits from a galvanised body, and the Jaguar benefits from having been ‘gone through’ but still…

That exhaust sound good but looks terrible. Prefer the sound of the ZT260, but I might be more than a bit biased as I own one of those myself.

Thanks for the comment; I couldn't agree more re. the exhausts, sound awesome but look totally out of place. I do not think I would swap the ZT260 for the XK, but just like you... I am bias! Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the comment. I do agree, the exhausts would not be my choice, but the car is still a stunner... particularly in red, which is a colour I do not really associate with Jaguar but it works on this XKR. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the comment. I am pleased you stuck with my video until the drive, despite the "so boring" content. I add chapters to my videos for anyone who wishes to skip to the drive (or any section they are particularly interested it), enabling others to see the history of the model or trim / spec of the car. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and hope you slept well.
