----------------------
In this eye-opening video, we tackle a deeply personal and complex topic: the perception of racial identity and its impact on daily life. As someone of mixed heritage-half British and half Nigerian-I face unique challenges living in Uganda. Despite my rich cultural background, I am often perceived as white, leading to assumptions about my identity and intentions.
*Perception and Reality in Uganda*
When people look at me, they don't see my Nigerian grandfather or my English mother who speaks fluent Yoruba and cooks traditional Nigerian dishes. Our family lived in Lagos' Surulere for almost two decades. My mother's deep connection to Nigerian culture is profound; she even taught at St. Saviour's High School, where one of her students was David Oyelowo, the star of the movie Selma.
However, in Uganda, the perception of being white overshadows my true story. People associate me with wealth, privilege, and even neo-colonialism, despite my genuine intentions and personal history. This video captures a candid interaction to show the reality of being biracial in Uganda.
*The Power of Cognitive Simplification*
Humans naturally categorize the world into simple mental shortcuts to manage complexity. This cognitive simplification, or heuristics, is a survival mechanism but can lead to misunderstandings and misjudgements. In Uganda, my perceived whiteness subjects me to stereotypes and assumptions, making it challenging to communicate my true identity.
But this isn't just about how others perceive me. It's also about how I perceive others. How often do we let our biases and emotions cloud our judgment, pre-judging others based on superficial impressions? This video invites you to reflect on your own perceptions and biases.
*Challenging Racial Divisions*
Many people draw divisions along racial lines, often with good reason. Historical injustices like slavery and colonialism are painful reminders of past wrongs. However, simplifying these issues into black-and-white terms overlooks the complexity of history. For example, while King Leopold's atrocities in Congo are well-known, fewer people know about Tippu Tip, a Black Tanzanian slaver who traded 1.5 million Africans, collaborating with Leopold.
Tribalism in African countries can be seen as a form of racism with a cultural twist. We must reject this ideology as a whole if we want to achieve the prosperous Africa we dream about. This video urges us to look beyond superficial divisions and focus on unity, accountability, and integrity.
*Personal Stories and Broader Implications*
Throughout the video, I share personal stories and broader historical contexts to illustrate these points. For instance, I grew up prostrating and seeing women in my family kneel, a sign of respect and tradition. This practice is seen differently in various cultures, highlighting the importance of understanding different perspectives.
My African American friends in Uganda face similar challenges. They may not be called white, but they are labeled "Musungu," meaning foreigner. This label comes with its own set of stereotypes and assumptions, such as being wealthy or privileged, regardless of their actual background.
*A Call for Unity*
Ultimately, this video is a call for unity. We must resist the temptation to divide ourselves along racial lines. Corruption, deceit, and self-interest should be opposed wherever they are found, whether from outsiders or within our own communities. Race is a poor measure of a person's moral character, and maintaining these divisions only serves to perpetuate injustice.
Join the conversation in the comments below and share your thoughts. Together, let's work towards a better future for Africa and the world. 🌍💬✨

@@winstynglyn6893 Nah bro, trust me. I’ve been to Kenya and I’ve met many Senegalese and Nigerians, dark skin is by far the norm. Rarely would you see an ethnic Yoruba or Luo who is lighter than Beyoncé. African Americans are not fully African, which is why those lighter skin complexions are more common. In the US, most people considered “fully black” have a bit of DNA from other groups. And Africans will recognize non-black features on people pretty easily. I agree that this man looks biracial, but I’m not surprised Ugandans notice his European far more.

In Africa most see us melanated Aboriginal and/or African descended peoples throughout the Americas and Caribbean as the Turtle Islanders, Tiano, Arawak and etc. Most of us have ancestors that are Aboriginal (Indigenous) to these places. So they consider us foreigners. I'm not interested in going "back to Africa", as the ray-sizt colonizers always like to throw in our faces. My family are Aboriginal Turtle Islanders on both sides. My mother's family has land in NC that's been ours for centuries. They had to forfeit tribal affiliation as Eastern Band Cherokee because they wanted to keep it. We need to stop this. It's time to awaken from the Western (American) colonial Dreaming and grow up. --------

If you want to be treated like an Afrikan then learn the culture, speak local language and also eat the local food. In other words , differentiate yourself from the Karens and male Karens. For example I knew British male Karen who spent most his life in my country,Ambazonia. He spoke pidgin very well. He preferred our food to British ones. In all honesty, he was one of us. He even picked up the way we mourn, so when the mother died , this man was grief striken for a long time.

I totally agree with you that people should be judge by their character. However, in this world RACE MATTERS especially when it comes to whyte people. Take for example in South Afrika THERE IS A STRONG RACIAL BIAS TOWARDS WHYTE SOUTH ARFIKANS REGARDING MINERAL RIGHTS AND LANDOWNERSHIP (due to the Native Land Act in 1913 and the 1936 Native Trust and Land Act that stripped all black people of the right to own land in SOUTH AFRIKA). ALTHOUGH whyte South Afrikans only make up 8% of the population in SA they control over 73 percent of the land and almost all privately-owned mineral rights are in white hands.

It doesn’t matter what a continental African thinks of an American black. I don’t see how you are having this conversation about Africa without contextualizing the colonial structures that contribute to the African psyche. I went to Africa three times and didn’t get labeled as a colonizer and I don’t have direct descendants from Africa outside the slave trade. But as I was writing this comment your Segway to a Black enslaver gives me insight as to why you would be called a colonizer because you are approaching Africa from a white supremacist over simplification. African people had no conception of race prior to contact with Europeans. You have over simplified Africans in a way you would never do to your European side. Do you say white people put white people in ovens, no you don’t because you wouldn’t dare oversimplify the holocaust that happened between the Nazis and the Jews. But for Africa you see the continent through the lens of the colonizer and make futile attempts to conflate tribal conflict with Western Imperialism. This is what makes you a colonizer, and all though I’m not excusing Africans ignorance of Diaspora’s people, you need to do some self assessment of how you approach your own identity. You’re confused because you have colonizer and colonized in your blood and you are trying to make the world fit into a box that gives both of your lineages equal scorn and praise. But that’s just it, your origin circumstances have no impact on the victim and victimizer relationship that persist even to day between whites and Blacks. So I reject your premise of declination based on character, at the end of the day, what impact does that have on the oppressed population that need the oppression to stop.

People can also have a colonizer mindset or view the world through a colonizer lens by the way that one carrys themselves and interact with people. The nuance of body language also play a roll in perception. It’s just not the color that one looks at to determine the culture one has. It’s the way one sounds, the way one walks and the way of one’s mannerism. Maybe they look at you and see the same mannerism as a white person from Europe? People maybe subconsciously judging cultural norms from a regain and projecting onto people as well. A Lot to undo what has been taught and ingrained in the psyche of colonial mindset.

What I don't understand about mixed ppl is that u have certain expectations of being treated a certain way when the very fact that ur mixed means interactions won't always favor you. Uganda is one country in Africa, obviously you won't be treated the same everywhere else, same as you'd be treated differently in the South of the US than in other places. Instead of accepting that, you spend too much time rationalizing what happens to you, attributing what happened to you in one country to the rest of the continent in a way that is very reminiscent of your European heritage. You have to understand, whatever TF ur ging through u will have both positive and negative interactions. I went to an Arab country and had mixed reactions, u might have more favorable reactions. I went around to an African country and received favorable interactions, u might have gotten more mixed reactions. No one's going to treat you perfect in every country, but has anyone hurt you yet for being mixed? Insulted you? Have you felt unwelcome? Well sh**, if that did happen, then u know what it feels like to be black or a minority or whatever. Welcome to the club then, but it's not something to dwell on IMO. U don't see me going to no Arab country trying to validate my existence as a black man or whatever when I know I will be treated differently cause of the color of my skin.

You are mistaken in the etymology of the n word. It comes from the Latin word for black niger. Many iterations of that word have come along. Off the top of my head the Spanish word for black beans frijoles negros. Just a little history. I agree with the video as well. Taking it a step forward. From a scientific view every race on earth is African. It's evident if you look at dogs. People made new breeds by breeding other traits out. However if the human race were to instantly die out today dogs would interbreed and return to their basic forms in the wild. So to if the human race were to lose it's capacity for thought and returned to just instincts we would interbreed and would eventually conform to the environment we are in. We definitely need more critical thinkers like this guy across the board.

That statement is false the etymology of the n-word is Latin. I'm guessing RU-vid censored my last comment on this but I'm not sure why. According to wikipedia the word was used just as a descriptor until 1775 when it was first recorded as durogatory. I do find problem with that. It may be accurate to say that was the first "recorded"use but I feel it was likely used as a slur before that incident although there's no proof of it. I do find it plausible that it was originally only a description of darker colored skin back before roman times. I mean no offense to the poster above, I just like to Google. History is awesome to me.

@@TheSubiShop Yes. He may not have the word to say "light-skin". Did you correct him? Tribal people not be exposed to many different types of people. He may be only exposed to "English" White people. You being light complexed and a British accent, of coarse he would say you're White. I'm a light skin, lighter than you, with curly hair. I'm not biracial. While visiting other countries, people would think I'm native or they'll ask my background. I would say I'm Black. In your case I would say, "I'm biracial. My parents are Blk/Wht." Most mixed with Black would say they're Black. I know non Black mix people tend identify by what they most look like. I'm sorry been called the N-word so many times in the UK; your home. I have been called that. Oh, do you understand about not identifying your mother as English?

Depends where you go. Also it's often on a person by person basis. It's not just skin tone, it's how they perceive your features
