Watching the use of a channel lock pliers to remove and install those 6 mm threaded studs looked barbaric. 6mm Stud Removal and Installation 101 - Install the two 6mm nuts that you removed onto one of the studs. Tighten the two nuts together with 10mm open end wrench holding the inner nut still and using a deep well socket to snug down the outer nut. Now to remove the stud, use the open end 10mm wrench on the inner most nut to back out the stud. To install the old stud into the new carb tighten down the outer most nut. A touch/drop of blue locktite helps the stud stay snug.

Give the kick starter a gentle 1/4 turn push to move the piston just past top dead center. Then give it a full kick. It’ll make starting the engine easier.

I rescued two 1978 CT70's from a barn. Washed them, cleaned the carbs, new batteries and cleaned out the plastic gas tanks and they fired up and run great. Still using the original tires. Fortunately they were stored carefully. Both were then plated and insured to drive on public roads. What a blast to ride, that's what they were meant for!

14:20 I do believe the switch your referring to on the handle bars that probably says high/low has nothing to do with the gear box it’s for the headlight, but to switch the bike to high range put it on the center stand and slowly turn the rear wheel as you turn the little leaver it should be pretty obvious when it’s in gear
@Mongoswede
@Mongoswede 2 года назад
🤦‍♂️ haha. Yeah the handlebar switch is the hi/lo headlight. I do love the confidence in how he nonchalantly indicates that the switch is t working like these bikes were equipped with some sort of electronic hi/lo switch 😂

I had a honda 110 three wheeler. To put it in high range, you had to get it rolling and push the lever in high. Once you get it rolling, it would go right in. I thought the same thing you did when they said they couldn't get it into high range.

For anyone who has a little bike that is hard to start or has to be push-started but then runs OK, I have often found that adjusting the valves will make them start with 1 or 2 kicks. The valve clearance gets tight with wear.

Lesson 1 how to kick start a bike. Lesson 2 how to adjust and operate a carburetor. You'll get the hang of it. Don't feel bad. Most new mechanics don't have a clue either. If you were old enough to grow up with these and others you know all about points and carbs, but if you are the fuel injection generation well, as you see night and day difference. Good luck. Clean the petcock, clean and set the points, adjust the carb, and ride it. If it still won't run right, take the jets out of the old carburetor, clean, and put in the new carb. Beware though, those Chinese carbs are junk. They are dirt cheap for a reason. Better off cleaning and reassembling the old carb with a new kit. The jets and air bleeds have to be right or it wont run right no matter what you do. Have fun. But it runs. Cool!

Just a useful tip for future: as you mentioned lot of similar size hardware is used on Japanese components. There are other 10mm head (~8mm bolts) that you can remove from the bike to clean out those threads on the carb, so you don't have to destroy the threads on the studs.

In the bottom of the tank is a strainer on the fuel valve. They rust shut and you won't have reserve but they screw out when you get the tank low enough and can be replaced. That could be some of the sputter.

If you only need a couple of simple parts to get your CT90 running they will seem pretty cheap. If you need a lot of parts and you buy good quality oem you will quickly find they can add up to hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Also you can get a comprehensive carb rebuild kit to keep the original carb on the bike which has a lot more value than any of the cheap knock off carbs
