1979 Honda CT90 Budget Restoration | Back on the Road after 27 YEARS!

This 1979 Honda CT90 or Honda Trail 90 was last tagged in 1994, and judging by the rust popping out of the paint, dust, and grime, I believe this Honda mini bike has been sitting that long. The ignition comes and goes on this vintage Honda dual sport (we ordered the wrong coil in this video), but we still cleaned it up, replaced the tires and seat cover, and took it for a ride! The 90cc 4 speed engine (with high and low functions!) is fast! I managed to get this old dual sport up to 40mph in my back yard.
Thanks for Watching!

My Uncle Bobby had a CT 90 just like that one when I was a kid, he would ride me and my two cousins on it . Man that sound takes me back so much, burnt my leg bad on that exhaust shield on time lol. Watching you guys take this old classic around the course nearly brought a tear to this 46 year olds eye. My uncle always made time for me on that cool old bike. He had one of those folding bleacher type seats fastened to that stainless rack behind the seat so we could ride with him on it. Thanks guys for bringing that fond memory of my uncle and my childhood back to me. My uncle passed away several years back of skin cancer so this sure made me smile thinking about the good times I had with him on that old CT 90 Honda. 🙂

You need a battery on these trail 90s or they don't run right! Been there done that! Went through this whole thing like you guys and found out you need battery! I was also able to cheat it by substituting a huge capacitor in place of battery, but you can't have lights, or brake lights on or engine can cut off.
@PaulHarkey44
@PaulHarkey44 3 года назад
Yes sir. Same here. I have the 73 model and, from what I’ve learned, the battery acts as sort of the voltage regulator. Otherwise, you’ll blow lights left and right.

I have a 2020 Honda CRF 250 and a 1981 Honda Trail 110. If I want to do some serious off road riding, I get out the 250 and it is great. But If I want to just have nothing but fun, it is the 110 that puts a smile on my face. I ride it around town (Ft. Worth) and get all the looks in the world. I take it to Wal Mart and when I come back to the bike there is usually 3 -4 men standing around looking at it. It is just fun by the hand full.

My father had a 1976 CT 90. It had two hand brake levers, the front brake was operated by the right lever & the rear brake by both the right side pedal & the left hand lever. The seat cover was also perished, so he replaced it with a plastic chicken-feed bag. The farm was all hills, the bike was prone to falling over and the alloy brake levers would snap off at their bases. To prevent this, the outward-curling section of both brake levers were cut off.

Green pad and comet powder is my rust remover. When I used to find old bikes in the woods and tear em down for painting and chrome clean up. Not to be too janky but I've taken LS v-8 coils and hooked them up to my bikes and riding mowers. Its a power wire, ground wire and trigger wire, which goes to the points, easy peasy. Bonus: strong spark and no burnt out points.

Loved those trail 90s. I must have put over 15K+ miles a year on mine. At 14 in Nevada you could get your license for a 50cc permit. But it was fine, we always ran around on the 90s. Those racks are excellent for making beer runs. I was always carrying 3-6 cases on a run. I was the lucky one they always served me from 15yrs on. I do belive I got to know every police officer in town. We were on a first name basis in our relationship. Until I was forced to choose one out of five branches by a judge in late 71.

Let the 66 go to get an express, another bike I remembered from back in the day. Also have a keystone mini bike resto mod underway and one you've not likely seen as it's Canadian an SE Woods minibike. Hopefully once the borders open up we can get back to visit our friends at the Windber PA minibike reunion. All the best from Nova Scotia Canada.

We use to own a pair of 1977 models and they look exactly like your 1979. A pair of them for only $450.00 back in the 90's. They didn't run initially. We brought them back to life. These bikes are a blast! Automatic transmission, a High and Low transfer case that really does work wonders... My father use to use one of these for deer hunting. Very quiet. Slap the deer on the back and take off! The little reserve gas tank cantina was also pretty cool. It used a 6 volt lead acid battery. Sadly the 1980 models removed the high /low transfer case. Then there was the CT 110 replacement. If I recall they did not have the high/low transfer case. Why Honda doesn't bring these back is a wonder to me.

Had one when I was 14; that was in 1971. Had 8 gears, 4 in high and 4 in low. Would climb any mountain road with two people in low, but would only go about 10mph. Driving 45mph on the road was really pushing it. Auto clutch, brought several bagged deer back from hunts in the Texas Hill country on the rack in the back. Glad to see this restore.

I've always loved seeing the wee Honda 90's, they were very popular here in Ireland in the past, and have a great following today although the prices have skyrocketed. After seeing this I think it's time to bite the bullet and buy one before they become unattainable, the big grins on your lads faces says it all! Also I think the intern is a great addition to the show, he fits right in with you guys!

My uncle rode one of these rigs 2000 kilometres into the Australian outback... and back again. Solo.

It’s amazing what a little cleaning and polishing can do to change a bike.

I have the shorter,height wise,version of those baskets on my motorized bike and use it for shopping all the time.Most of the time they're closed and I strap my backpack over them.That is the first motorcycle I rode,and I've wanted 1 since.That bike would've been brand new then.

Carburetor and points ignition. Doesn’t get much simpler than that! I just finished rebuilding a carb for a ‘49 Ford F1. Somehow the fuel tank got sand in it. I rebuilt the carb, new fuel tank, put a new clear fuel filter in line, drained the fuel pump bowl and blew out the lines. Also the carburetor and spacer didn’t have gaskets. After that it was running better, but not as good as it should. So I figured the spark plugs were fouled from the fueling issues. Also someone out AC Delco spark plugs in a Ford. Turns out #2 spark plug was hand tight (these plugs have a crush washer). I put some Autolite 216s in here and torqued then to spec. She’s been purring like a kitten ever since. I’ve burned through a tank of fuel and the filter is still relatively clean. When it’s cold you have to choke it, but once it warms up it starts at the first push of the button. Then the transmission was leaking and grinding going into 1st occasionally. I drained the oil and put the some 85-140 oil in it. Moral of the story is just because a vehicle is bought restored doesn’t mean it’s not going to be perfect. The person who did the body work did a great job, but their mechanical skills are a bit lacking.
