I moved on to the S5ii from the GH6, but I really miss the flip-up screen and slow-mo. The GH6 a little overkill for me though. I'm just a hobbyist.

Yeah, I really like those parts of the camera. I always try and incorporate some slo mo in to the projects I do 🙂 Saying that, 4k 60 is what I use the majority of the time and it sounds like you made a sensible switch.

I’ll buy the GH7 for the 32bits audio, very useful on a race track, it will simply my current setup with the GH6 with an external audio recorder . Then the auto focus will be useful as well. However, as you said, the GH6 is already a great camera but let’s be frank, once you’ll use the GH7 with its new features, you’ll be very glad to have made the move. I’m not going to move to full frame because of the large investment on lenses I would have to make, and because I’m currently very happy with the image from the GH6. I’m looking forward to tryout the Arri LogC3 profile. I hope with this profile the images from the GH6 and GH7 will match perfectly. It’s great to see Panasonic keep updating their M43 cameras lineup. I hope we’ll keep seeing new lenses, especially now we have a good auto focus system.

Yeah, that sounds like 32-bit would very much needed in that instance. For track shooting I find the AF for photography actually very good but it needs a bit more hand-holding for video with fast-moving subjects. Technically, V Log out from both cameras they should be pretty similar. This past couple of years has been a really big push for M43 which is really nice to see, long may it continue!

No, sadly you need a combination of the XLR2 and the GH7 for 32-bit float.

My only complaints on GH6 is the 2000 base ISO. Other than that I am perfectly satisfied. I won't upgrade to GH7. If I were to upgrade, I'd probably consider full frame, as they are getting so affordable these days. Also acturally in China GH7 is well promoted and attracts many lumix fans. The pricing in China is very reasonable (around 1,870 USD including ARRI log upgrade).

Yeah that is a bit of a bugbear for me as well. It's good that they remedied that in the GH7. 1870USD is much more reasonable in terms of pricing. We just get stung on the export and import. I can quite happily wait for prices to come down.

Hi Steven. My feelings are much the same as yours. I am most interested in the DMW-XLR2 adapter, but I can wait till next year earliest before I make a purchase .

Yeah, that is a nice addition to the camera. It takes ages for the accessories to become available over here, so even if I pre-order the camera it will likely still take months for me to get the XLR2 or the DCC18 dummy battery 🫤

I really want one, mostly for the autofocus fix and better dynamic range boost integration. I've daydreamed about winning one in a competition, or selling loads of gear to raise funds, but like you I can't really justify the purchase right now. May consider buying one second hand in a year's time to save a few hundred quid.

Yes, those two things and the 32-bit float recording are really what make it interesting to me. If you don't need it right now then waiting for the price to come down is a sensible option.

So, this will be the best GH-camera ever, possibly for ever. Makes sense if you are in the MFT ecosystem. For others maybe not, but I expect a FF S1 mk II version to cost like $4500...

Its certainly a lot of camera for the money. The GH7 and G9m2 now give both G and GH users a nice upgrade path if they want to stay in the MFT ecosystem.

As a professional audio mixer as well as a pro shooter, unless I am editing what I'm shooting, I make sure with post BEFORE I shoot with 32-bit audio if that works with their post workflow. Like you I have GH6 and it does a great job, and while the autofocus is not as fast/accurate as a GH7 I don't find myself relying on auto-focus very often largely due to the use of manual lenses. I also noticed that there are a few lens firmware updates that came out along with v3 for the GH6 for the 10-25 and the 25-50 Leica zooms. I will be interested to see if those with GH6 cams that experienced the streaking issue find the Arri Log profile doesn't exhibit the same problem. So far (I've had the cam since it was available) I have not experienced the issue, but it would be something to consider. Like you, I will probably wait until they do a price drop to inspire sales as the did with the GH6. For me the real question is will the GH7 be has good with low light as the GH5S which is my current Lumix b-cam. As always, thanks Steven for your hard work on this channel!

I did notice those updates, they essentially reference 'Improved AF performance while zooming' and support for the G9m2 and GH7. Yes, I had thought the same on that as the streaking never seems to occur in standard picture profiles, or at least I haven't seen it. It's nice to have the GH7 out there as a potential upgrade option. On Lumix Live they said 'the newer MFT cameras (referencing the GH7/G9m2) are better than the GH5s in low light' not my words and I have neither camera for comparison. Thank you, I appreciate it 🙏

I have the G9m2 and have no desire to get the GH7. My G9m2 is basically the GH7 minus the Talley Light and the Flippy screen. And the fan is a bit over hyped especially as a YouTubber acquaintance took her G9m2 on Safari in high noon sun doing photography and filming, and not once did the camera overheat. I've got my GH6, and that is now relegated to my B Cam. I also have no desire to buy the Arri logC3 profile either, simply because I will never see an Arri camera let alone be given Arri footage to play with. The Panasonic vLog colour profile is superb and with a bit of tinkering, by a professional colourist, can match an Arri camera.

Yeah if you don't need any of the additional features the GH7 has then there is no reason to upgrade. I think for the GH6/GH7 the fan is a necessity due to how hot CF Express Type B cards can get. Previous cameras like the GH5 that used dual SD cards could run all day long without a fan. But the introduction of the fan and CF Express gave us much better recording options internally.

@@stevelitton CF Express cards are too expensive for me. However a 2TB NVME SSD inside a caddy solves that problem for a fraction of the cost. I can also edit straight off the super-dooper fast 2TB drive.

Yeah I love those cheap NVMe cards 🙂 The price is coming down a bit on CF Express Type B cards thankfully with more options coming to the market.

@@stevelittonI wonder if the buffer performance for pre burst is better on the GH7. I imagine the clearance of the buffer is quicker than the G9II.

@@007silverwings you can utilise the CF Express Type B slot so it will be much quicker to clear than writing to SD cards. You could speed up your G9ii buffer clearance by using SSD for burst shooting.

this where im at, get it or get the dji focus pro which will make all my sirui anamorphics and prime lenses AF....i have three recorders that do 32 bit the later saves me a grand but more ropey....but have a bmpcc4k to so AF would be good on that too

Oh yeah, in that situation it sounds like the DJI Focus Pro might be the better all around investment.

Hi Steve, we have talked about exactly this. If I could afford it I would just for the 32bit float audio as only the GH7 is compatible for it. How funny I used to work in DVD Authoring at Technicolor, Deluxe etc.

Yeah, that is a very appealing feature for me as well for some of the shoots I do. It would save me from having to cut up and sync external audio tracks at times. Ah nice, I used to enjoy do that as a job but I am showing my age a bit there 🙂

Yeah, luckily a lot of what I already knew was quite heavily based in web, so I moved over in to that area. It was always coming, it was just a case of broadband becoming mainstream and fast enough.

XLR2 for 32bit float would be my reason to upgrade from GH6 as I now also deal with F3 and powering it as well as syncing in Resolve afterwards. Doing it all in one unit with synced 4 channels would be a big time and setup saving. Honestly none of the other new features are of much use to me including AF as I shoot in theatre all manual anyway. But BRAW internal would be of interest. I am sure that will come and I may then get the GH7.

If I didn't just buy the G9II I would get the GH7.You should wait and see if they offer the $500 extra trade in like they did with the G9II. I got almost $1,000 for the GH6 and then the extra $500 trade in. So the G9II was under $500 total. I would think about it again if Lumix made the same offer, but then again the G9II does everything I need and the AF is very good.

That's a great deal, you have done well there! Yeah, if you are happy with the G9m2 then you may not need to even update it. It will save you the hassle of getting CF Express Type B cards, different body-specific accessories etc. You already have that new AF and the photography features, so it is really down to whether you need 32-bit audio, ProRes RAW or the Arri LogC3 profile.

I am not sure if this caused it, but after the latest update I noticed the lumix webcam beta software no longer works with my GH6 on Windows. Is anyone else having this issue? I am on Windows 10.

I have the following cameras gh4, gh5, s5 and I am still paying for the s5. From a business point of view I can't buy it. Only if I get higher profile clients and the productions demand it. For now I don't earn enough to buy it and they don't pay me enough for the models I already have to sell them. So I think I'll wait a year or two...as always.

Great camera line up! Yeah that's sensible, the camera isn't going anywhere. It'll still be there when you do get some bigger jobs and want to upgrade and the bonus is it'll be cheaper 🙂

Yeah full frame certainly comes with its own set of advantages. The prices have really come down in recent years as well due to how competitive the market is right now.

For the first time since the GH4, I'm not going to preorder. To be honest, I don't really see another mirrorless as an upgrade, and the GH6 and lens I know are more than enough. Plus, I don't like how Panasonic has dealt with GH6 owners, and while no camera gets indefinite updates, if the GH7 doesn't sell, will they just stop supporting that, too? As you mentioned, there are no preorder incentives, and it seems they are limiting production to 1000 per month. Does this indicate a lack of confidence in their product, or an effort to boost preorders and prevent discounts?

Yeah its really disrupted the natural upgrade path for a lot of users. On the GH7 livestream they did, they essentially just said 'cameras are selling and we don't need to reduce the prices' which is fair enough, its supply and demand at the end of the day.

@@stevelitton The main cameras I'm seeing in any professional capacity are Sony, and the S5ii/X is already on the used market. Plus, now I feel the Nikon Z6iii will shake things up a little, but it gives nothing over the GH6 when it comes to dynamic range, which at this point in my career means more than anything else. The Canon C400 has really piqued my interest, as the only thing I'm really missing for how I work is a fully-fledged cine camera with internal ND. Yeah, they say cameras are selling, but I'm not seeing it in the real world. Their biggest issue is at this point, everyone either has something that's good enough or has already moved on for better autofocus. 32bit is fine, but I've never really had a problem with clipping audio, and the 32bit recorders I own have hardly been used over the XLR1.

There is no doubt there are some great options out there in the market right now which is great for us. I think for internal ND and that improved dynamic range you do have to be in the Full Frame market. Who knows what the next Panasonic full frame camera will look like.

@@GrenlandUnderVann Realtime LUT, improvement of the IBIS like the S5ii, and any kind of attempt to improve autofocus, display info on LCD and external monitor when shooting internal codecs. The last significant update was BRAW on July 23, and the GH6 isn't outdated. It's been outright abandoned! Outside of the updates promised at launch, what's it had?

I believe Patience is key, IF you have the gh6 already, and I'm not sure you will see ANY difference. Soon the Sony FX3 will be updated, and that will cause a large whooosh in the market, as they are already at 15 stops, and if it delivers the same or more functionality than the gh7, the gh7 COULD fall just as fast as the gh6 did.

No, it's not a huge upgrade from the GH6 unless you are desperate for PDAF or internal ProRes RAW. The FX3 does cost 3.5-4k though, it sits more in the bracket of the FX30 which has 14 stops of DR. But that camera does have a bigger sensor and better low capabilities. I'm always interested to see what comes along.

@@stevelitton I agree. This machine was literally named the gh6 mkii, and near launch they changed it to gh7. From the specs, yes, this is actually the gh6 mkii.

Would a better script or lighting improve your work? Would renting a cinema camera for a big gig make more sense? Does crew help? Was your work crap before you had a GH5? Do you really want to buy more expensive lenses? What about the GH8 or the GH6SA.2 with AI phase detect autofocus and auto everything or simply using AI to tell your story while you watch football? Chase gear and stay cool while documenting heatwaves, wars, ecological catastrophe, tent cities and landfills. Knock wood for server space for plebs and proles. ;-) Enjoy!

Hype??? What hype? I personally do not see or hear much fanfare about this camera, which is a crying shame. Since I do not see many putting this camera through its paces, I'll just do it myself. I should be getting it during initial release and first batch of shipments..

From my point of view: MFT no longer makes sense in 2024. FF cameras are the future, with a weight and size smaller than the gh7. Panasonic's biggest mistake: The features and capabilities of the GH7, (which are indeed many and good) should be the features of the s5iix. So that he can then introduce s1h ii, and maybe s1hx and dominate.. And those choices will be ...punished, I'm afraid in a bad way...(the exit door is very close...).

I think it still makes sense in regards to they can do things like really clean 4K 120 for under 2K and internal ProRes RAW. You are unlikely to get that like-for-like in full frame due to sensor readout speeds. The bodies are smaller but they can't do what the GH6/GH7 can do internally and the lenses are much bigger in most instances. Also, I pair up a lot of my footage with a Mini 3 Pro, so I see little point matching full frame footage with 1/1.3in sensor footage. MFT isn't for everyone but for me as a single shooter, I love being able to get 2 cameras, 3 lenses, a drone and cob light into my backpack.

I'm glad you found solutions that work for you. But look: Nikon Z6iii, FF, for 2500. I honestly can't find anything that beats the GH7, the Z6iii. On the contrary, they are only $300 different and one is mft, while the other is ff. Guess which one, people will choose. That's exactly what I wanted to say to Panasonic. The Z6iii also "eliminate" the s5iix...

I think people get very hung up on sensor size though. One of the reasons I left full frame (Canon) was because at the time they reserved most of their 'pro' features for the cinema line. Whereas Panasonic just throws the kitchen sink into every camera. You want shutter angle, you have it, you want waveform, you have it, you want to charge over USB or record directly to SSD, you can do that (albeit, one or the other). Those are just a few features they offer above the competition but you get the idea. They are also absolute workhorses, they never overheat or complain in the wet or cold. I'm not saying Panasonic cameras are perfect, they aren't, but for me, they give me everything in a camera as a working tool. I would much rather have all the features I need in a maxed-out MFT camera than a budget full frame that doesn't do what I need it to. But at the end of the day, each to their own.

The images out of GH6 are already very good, and it is what matters IMO. As long as Panasonic keep updating their sensors and cameras with the latest technologies, like they did with the GH7 and G9II, I don’t see why the M43 system will end soon.

Why did you buy gh6 if you have gh5? Of course, before you buy gh7 you need to sell gh6 and then it will be a little extra money. The GH7 is better for wildlife photographers than the gh6. As for autofocus and better stabilization, perhaps this is all interesting. But I can already hear criticism of gh7. We need to wait for reviews from real customers.

Because the GH6 was a huge upgrade over the GH5. 5.7k, all 10bit video, SSD recording, full V Log, ProRes and 4k 120. My GH5 is my b cam/backup camera body. I would be selling my GH5, not my GH6. Yeah it looks good from the marketing but I would like to hear some real feedback on the camera before buying.

@@lnuponom2678 I can't have just one camera. If I show up to a shoot and that camera doesn't work for whatever reason what would I do? I also like to use my second camera (GH5) for a second angle or to capture time lapses whilst I shoot on my GH6.

@@stevelitton The GH7 doesn't have a built-in internal ND filter either. GH6 doesn't have it either. This means that the GH7 is still far from the last model in this line. Yes, autofocus is a little better, stabilization is a little better. That's all for me. This is very little for me to sell the GH6. When I buy a new camera, it should have much more significant capabilities than mine. If I were just now deciding to buy a camera, I would buy the GH6 because it is now much cheaper than the GH7.
