Here’s a short video that I recorded today.
The rhythm is that of Amabhiza a Kalanga tribal dance that originates in Matabeleland South Province of Zimbabwe. This dance was performed during rain asking ceremonies to appease the spirits of the rainmakers for a good harvest.
On Amabhiza you would normally have 3 drums. Two of them (ingungu) would keep the basic rhythm as played on my video & then you would have the special drum called Mandobo Drum (a friction drum) that is played using Isikholokotho a plant that is rubbed across the head of the
mandobo drum creating friction and a unique sound.
When I was at Umkhathi Theatre Works & performing with other groups where we had to trim our team, I would be the only drummer therefore I had to create a sound that would almost cover all the drumming
patterns (like shown on video).
