The only people that accuse others of selling out are shallow minded wishers. This girl put in a lot of work. Also, she writes good stories. I am very happy for her success and enjoyed hearing her story over the last few videos I watched.
I love how she pretty much said a big fuck you to all the highly commercialized and corporate publishers out there and instead did her own thing. Much respect!
This was one of the very first videos I came across when I first started my journey. I was so inspired by her to write and keep on writing! Not to just write one and be done like originally thought. I now have two books “Fed Up? Change Up!” and “Changed Up! Now What?”. Both on Amazon instead of traditional publishing! I’m still working on selling my first million copies though and I’m almost there by faith! God bless all of the writers that came here for inspiration.
Amanda this video has been inspiring and don't worry about the dislikes for this video because the ones that did that are so negative that they are lost in life, hopefully they will come to their senses.
Definitely a lot of work. I have written three novellas and three novels. However, my novels are only around 100 kindle pages. It seems that buyers on Amazon KDP only want to buy kindle books that are 300 plus kindle pages. I am working trying to make my stories that long, but like Amanda says it is hard work and I do agree. After writing a Novel of 40k words (100 kindle pages), you are exhausted. The new stories of mine I am working on should be 300 plus kindle pages.I love the world of fiction story writing. In my opinion, writing is the most powerful force of talent there is.
Adam Horton You really need to shoot for the 85,000 to 110,000 word range. 100,000 words should be your target goal at the start of the book. 3000 words a day and that's about a month's worth of writing. Another month of rewriting and editing and you should be good to go.
The publisher also gave her a 2 million dollar advance for I think it was 5 books. Multiply that by not having to shoulder the entire publishing effort and it makes sense. Most traditional publishers aren't taking on writers to change the words they're writing. They want the writer writing the words they're going to write. So "selling out" to a book publisher probably isn't going to have a lot of impact on the final product in terms of alterations and censorship, etc. Sounds like her goal has always been to be with a traditional publisher. Glad she achieved it.
I'm so proud of you Amanda! I never knew that I was chasing after the wrong dreams all my life, I always thought it was writing songs and singing. This November it all started out by me goofing around writing a short story but then it became a child from book, after that I wrote a couple more. I am dumbfounded with all the tools on the internet of how to self publish ect.. But I can't wait to learn cuz I have a beautiful story. All the best to you from Wisconsin!
Well said! Writing is hard work. As a writer, I have learned that writing quickly and producing quality material is more effective than writing one book every two years. Another thing I've learned is that the best marketing strategy is in writing the next book.
I've just started the program, so I haven't sold many books. Nevertheless, I am following the formula, and it's working. Furthermore, I have sold more books with the KDP program than I'd sold with another POD company.
I love your books and even the water song series my favorite. I have them all and I even have a signed copy of the second book lullaby that I had gotten for my 14th birthday and now I’m 16 and still rereading them. I had just found some of your new books and looking forward to listen or read them. Keep writing I love your work.
Just bought Crystal Kingdom, and I'm hooked. Can't put it down. I love your books, and I want to be an author when I'm older. You inspired me, and now I know what I'm going to strive for.
Yeah. If I get a book by her, even if I've read it before (I've read most of them before... But still reread them) You won't see me until I'm finished the book.
Catherine Creations That's wonderful, sweetie! Out of all the comments I've read so far, yours is the most positive. I love that you found a role model with something REAL to offer you. Something substantial to look up to. A little advice... I suggest you study hard and make certain you pay close attention to your instructors in your English, Spelling, Grammar and Composition classes.Amanda Hocking weather or not you realize it, your greatest success is this right here. Being a positive role model to these young adults. Showing them with hard work and determination anything is possible. God Bless you both and may He shower you with health and much success in all your future endeavors.
This video was made forever ago from when I am writing, but I have been following you for a while. Trying to find some confidence in writing and its been difficult. I have a ton of ideas I have had since I was a kid and I am trying to put them out. Just scare I guess. I am starting my first book and finished the first chapter. I like how it started so far. I keep watching your videos to enlighten me more. So Thank you for saying what you have told us and your advice is great.
Her books are beautiful I felt drawn to them I couldn't stop reading and when i finished the series i was reading i basically cried she is my favourite author
That's what drew me into ebooks! It does give you a quicker feedback time because your work gets out there to readers and writers faster. Kind of nerve racking yes, but I think in the end it's worth it :-) Thanks for sharing this!
just finished the trylle trilogy and became a huge fan of amanda hocking! can anyone tell me which of her other books are the best so i know what i should read next? i've bought the first two watersong books but i don't really want to start something that hasn't finished yet :/
So are you saying Amazon is not a way to upload to Kindle and , how else should we find audiences, im trying to figure out Cover designers if your on a budget i know there are diff types of people that do diff styles for a budget is this practical ? Do we need to hire big Companies to do the same thing, I have done my own stuff here and there. Not on the New Yorks list as of yet.. but also do not have the funds to invest with something I personally can hire armatures to do for the same type of work.
The only thing that bothers me about downloading ebooks is this (exerpt from an online review about Hollowland): "While the plot and the characters may have been triumphs, the writing really leaves a lot to be desired. I do not like to talk about spelling and grammar because in the context of reviewing a story it doesn't really add much value, but in this case I have to comment. The ebook I downloaded was riddled with typos and formatting errors, often disrupting the immersion and really making this book hard to read. Very basic grammatical errors littered throughout the book were quite annoying to read, but the substantial grammatical errors had me rereading lines multiple times, scratching my head trying to figure out what is going on and what the author is trying to tell me."
gratz, amanda while im working on my own fictional book now I think at lest for me to prove to myself that people what it I self publish first then go traditionalist. That way people can see it has a proven track record make sense?
+The Investigators " What percentage do you make when dealing with traditional publishing houses " See, not much. They have so much to say on here but when you ask them that, all you hear is crickets.
Amanda, sorry to bother you but I'm 14 years old and I love to write and express my love for writing on different platforms I got kindle on my phone and started to read a couple of books and so life went on. But when I realised that I actually want people to notice me for my books I searched many different things on RU-vid and all the different social media platforms, and I came across your RU-vid channel and I said to my self wow! this women is amazing and I here I am and all I ask for is advice on how improve your writing skills and how to sell your books quicker and faster to earn more money. Please reply sincerely braydan
+Chris Nilsson " Selling ebooks is impossible people. Don't get your hopes up. If I wrote 100 ebooks I would make about $100 and maybe not even that much. " Well, you just contradicted yourself. In the same sentence you said it was IMPOSSIBLE to sell ebooks , then you said if you published 100 ebooks you would MAKE (earn from SELLING) $100. So which is it? I get what you mean but $100 is better than nothing. Oh I think you could sell more than just 1 copy of each book now, c'mon. Give yourself a little more credit.
