It was so awesome when The Dresden Dolls opened up for NIN... After they were replaced by Ladytron i met Trent Backstage in London and asked him 'Why the replacement' These were his exact words... 'We respect the group they do what they do and do it well, but after hearing coin operated boy so many times, trying to get it out of your head was torture' That is a true story... I love you Amanda :)
There's nothing like a performance where the artist has the actual emotion for it instead of just singing it emotionally. I almost cried when I noticed she had been crying through the entire thing.
Breathtaking. I'm in tears. Trent Reznor is a musical god and you're a goddess so it works so well. I love that you dedicated this to putting 2009 behind us because it just fits all too well. Thank you so much for posting this amazing performance.
@BeepStratten It's a Nine Inch Nail's song that Johnny Cash covered, actually. It was released in 1994 and written by Trent...it was then covered by Johnny Cash almost 10 years later.
I think the best thing about this version is the Boston Pop's beautiful arrangement. When you hear how wonderfully Hurt lends itself to a symphonic treatment you can fully appreciate Reznor as a truly great composer, especially of dark minimalist pieces that pack such intense emotional power. Were the final history to be written on him today it would likely say "electronic/industrial rock musician". But he is so more than that. He has produced stuff that elevates him to a Phillip Glass level.
I really enjoy all three versions of this song. Each are uniquely different and good. This is more of a classical beautiful because the orchestra helped out. I love how each are very emotional as well.
Amanda's voice is beautiful as always, lending a wonderful emotion to the song. And major props to the Boston Pops and Lance Horne, the orchestra is AMAZING!
I love you amanda palmer! you are blessing to this world. By the end i wanted to give you a big hug but i'll just settle for projecting it through the internet. :) you are a gorgeous creature.
I loved it when Trent hit the last note and kicked the keyboard and walked off and the reverb just went on and on forever and the smoke and the noise and the sweat of the crowd and oh, that was The Fragile Tour, Lakeland, Florida 2000. Nevermind.
amazing cover of one of trents best work.Saw dresden dolls at hammerstein in 05 when they opened up for nin.Did not know much about them before and they blew me away when i saw them.
I can not describe my feelings for this cover.. I will stand in admiration of Amanda Palmer forever for helping me through my life with her incredible appearance!
Wow, that is a powerful song to sing and very touching for the reason you wished to sing it. I hope your 2010 brings you just enough light among the dark that has to be there.
As always, you're amazing, inspiring, moving, uplifting, and refreshing. I wholeheartedly believe you're one of, if not the best musician our lifetime will know. I can only hope I'll see you live sometime.
yes it was, I really enjoyed her cover of Creep, and really all of her music... this particular song/performance/instance is an exception in my opinion.
I like to think of it as a marble cake. And we have to eat the whole thing. Amazing performance. Your darkness and rough edges are your most attractive feature
@katsup78 WRONG... It's always been a NIN song.. Cash merely covered it.. But he did it splendidly. So splendidly that Trent Reznor in fact said this song is not mine anymore.. It's Johnny's song now.. FYI..
This was absolutely fucking beautiful! Johnny Cash DESTROYED this song with his crappy monotone voice and changing the lyrics. Amanda makes it REAL. Btw, the song isn't meant to be song perfectly melodic, if you've ever HEARD Trent Reznor sing it. It's a slow song about pain.. it's meant to be a little dissonant and strained as if the person is in pain.
Was this in response to what I said? Just a little confused but I think it is. Sometimes I think she down plays the brilliance of her own originals. I do think the other covers were amazing.
@Darkatanforever NiN are clever to cover it 8 years before cash sang it.... Reznor is a fan of the cash cover from what I hear, tho he wasn't sure when first approached with the idea... I think the video really helped JC's version.
I don't see why someone can't sing a song they like without people condemning them to the fiery pits of hell for not being their favorite version. Grow up, offer some constructful criticism, or don't bother commenting. I loved the orchestration, and I love this song, but my favorite is still Johnny Cash's. My biggest beef (happens a lot live) was the orchestra was a bit too loud, or the mic not loud enough.
I love how the person who tries to act superior to me has to resort to name calling and childish antics b/c he/she doesn't like my arguments. Very mature. @farnick simply b/c Trent loved it doesn't mean it's good. Trent was honoring an old coot who had gained some respect in the music industry for just being around forever. Which is supposedly an accomplishment but look at all the old coots with no talent hanging on.
That redishion was truly beutiful and hart felt. I think It was the best I herd with the full orchestra and your powerful voice. It brout me back to the darkest parts of my past and makes me greatfull for every joyiest moments in life. THanks for sharing that AFP your very inspireing. Your biggiest gay fan Patrick
@whychristopher Man, google your shit before you talk atleast. the song was originally written by trent reznor and performed by nine inch nails. Johnny Cash only made his cover/interpretation of the song.
