Why does the 2017’s Eurovision winner sound so different from other contemporary pop songs? Luís Figueiredo the arranger of the song “Amar Pelos Dois” sang by Salvador Sobral and written by Luisa Sobral, explains why.

Portugal has always presented Eurovision with songs that are so different from the usual 'la-la' shit that most other countries come up with ! - Let's hope Portugal lift the standard of songs in future Eurovisions. Well done Portugal, from London !

Come on. Portugal has a huge collection of poor quality entries to the ESC. Only thing we can give them is that they always sang in portuguese. Still, when they once in a while have quality songs, they barely manage to make a top 10. This year for sure was something special
@Lazuli_Nox
@Lazuli_Nox 6 лет назад
Poor quality ? Actually... Portugal is poor, so maybe the quality is just a reflect of what we have. If you felt something soft when listening this song, is because that's all left from this country : love for an old place, respect for his history and a pure and simple love for life, traditions and family. If you want effects, booms, lights, vocals, etc. So enjoy other countrie's songs... But just don't say that a country has a bad quality when they just like to make true songs. Every country in Europe is different, songs doesn't have to be all the same ! All my respect for you and listen to some portuguese songs ^^

+lemasquepourpre Well Patricia as a Portuguese I must tell you that, you can't consider Portugal Poor, Portugal is one of the 40 richest countries in the world among 200, one of the 30 richest in Europe among 54 states, in per capita richness. Portugal may not be among the top 10, but maybe 80% of the persons in the world are really really poor and live suffering from hunger and other evils, any person born in Portugal can't consider himself/herself poor, that would be an insult to the entire world. Portuguese are all saying "we're poor we're poor" as an excuse for everything. But 90% of the persons in the world are more poor than a Portuguese unemployed. If you say that Portuguese are poor, then you don't have a clue of what happens in the world. There are millions of persons in the world living with a 1€ per month, and in Portugal we have a MINIMUM wage of 670€ (575*14/12) and have lots of things a lot cheaper than they have in 3rd world countries. We Portuguese may not be as rich as some rich countries, but remember we're richer than the majority of the world, it would be an insult for many if we consider ourselves poor, the richest countries in the world are like 10% of the total, they are not the majority. All the Portuguese: Stop saying we're poor. We may not be one of the richest countries, but there 80% of countries living a lot worse than us.

Thank you! But the fact is that, although Portugal has sent some different and good songs, usually they are not easy to catch people from other countries and not understanding Portuguese. On the other waym specially in the las years (most of the songs from th 21st century) were realyy bad, trash. There are many good composers and singers in Portugal, and I hope that after winning ESC the country will send much better songs than those usually in the contest.
@hunterofliars9600
@hunterofliars9600 6 лет назад
OK but let me try and explain why I think that is. Portugal has always sent good songs to the ESC but no matter how good they were, they were always ignored and the top prize given to some stupid, worthless and totally shit song (search and listen to Croatia's 'winning' entry of 1989) so in recent years Portugal decided to stop trying and send shit songs too not giving a damn whether they would win or not. Might it surprise you that Portugal is part of the ESC since 1964 and was the only country never, EVER, to win it ? - ALL other countries, yes, ALL other countries have won it at least TWICE and many won it 3 times including Israel which isn't even an Europen country? So why is Portugal the ONLY country never to win it prior to 2016 ? The answer is political. Yes, the ESC has been used as a political tool (Croatia 'winning' it during their conflict with Serbia, for example). I am still trying to figure out why Portugal was allowed to win it this time. Yes their song was wonderful but that has nothing to so with it..... or has it ?!

This song has to be sang in Portuguese. You did a great job in this cover. I have fallen in love with the Portuguese language due to this song. It really got under my skin. And every time my eyes are full of tears. Sobral is right when he says “Music is not fireworks, music is feelings”.

@josemesquita6713

Awesome commentary on the composition of this beautiful song. It's so true that everyone would benefit from a little musical education - music is for many little more than aural wallpaper which requires no input or effort from the listener. As a result, we get used to hearing more of the same and demand what is familiar, instead of allowing ourselves to be challenged by what is new, experimental, and different. This song continues to move people all around the world, and proves that there is plenty of room for all kinds of music - we only have to open our ears and listen with our hearts. Obrigado.

Great video! Parabéns, Luís Figueiredo! I rarely listen to pop music, but not because I don't like it, since The Beatles are my favourite band, and they're a pop band. A different one, though, and that's what I want from music. In Portugal, we are having more and more good musicians getting noticed - great ones like Luísa Sobral, Miguel Araújo, António Zambujo, just to name a few - who are singing in their native tongue, running away from the convention that not so long ago said that if it wasn't in english, it wouldn't sell. Well, I think that if millions of people voted for a young stranger whose words didn't make sense in their heads, I can assume that good music sells, whatever the language sang... Just recently discovered a band from the 70's (Electric Light Orchestra), which I think are way ahead of its time (listening to "Believe Me Now" reminds me of Muse, for instance, another giant from the present). So, good quality music is out there, we just need to filter it more and find music through our tastes, not from industries who need to sell the same music through different artists that come and go. Keep listening! Keep discovering!

Great video. :) I always say this to people, who complain that they hate modern pop and that "there's no good music anymore", that there IS still good music out there, you just have to look for it, instead of waiting for it to appear in the charts or the radio. And if you want your favourite "not-so-mainstream" music to be more popular, then TELL PEOPLE ABOUT IT, show it to them! One of the great things about the internet is that it's easier than ever to follow your favourite musicians and keep up with their more recent work, even if they aren't big superstars (or perhaps were once, but haven't been for a while). I think Salvador's statement was probably controversial because he made a rather poor choice of words, which caused his statement to sound very snobbish, and detract from what he probably meant. I feel like this video explained his point a lot better (that the mainstream market of today is very monotonous because the industry has very narrow ideas on what will and won't sell, so they prefer to play it safe and stick to the same formulas that they know will sell, so they often resort to a very fast-food-ish way of making music, which is why a lot of modern pop songs sound very similar to each other, and that you can still move people even if your music strays from conventional mainstream pop formulas, people just need to hear it). But the way Salvador said it, "We live in a world of disposable music, [...] and I think this could be a victory for people who make music that actually means something", sounded more like he was saying, "the world's full of shitty and unimportant music, but I'm a real artist, who makes important music, and that's why I won, because I'm better than all of them!" A lot of people who enjoyed his song probably enjoy pop music too, and for him to slag off a lot of the world's music as "disposable", and say that his music is "music that actually means something", it didn't just sound snobbish, it sounded really pretentious. As in, "what makes him think that he and his music is so special and important?", seeing as how music is subjective at the end of the day, and "Amar Pelos Dois is the best song from this year's competition" is only an opinion, and not an objective fact. Although it is indeed an opinion that most of the juries and viewers happened to agree with, hence it winning. :P I think if Salvador had phrased his speech better, his point would have been clearer and it wouldn't have been controversial at all.

There have been a surprising number of musically diverse performances at the ESC over the years (Norway 1973 and Lithuania 1999 for example) but they seldom score well or gain much recognition beyond the contest itself. Thank you for unpacking why that is and for honouring the authenticity and success of Salvador's victory with such a beautiful song.

This is such a great video and so many great points about modern music productions are made here. I think it's great to be musically literate. Thanks for the playlist too! I am always on the hunt for new stuff to listen to too. This was just a great video and thanks for your work. Honestly this year's Eurovision had some great songs that were outside of the typical pop sound (and typical ballads of screaming women) it was a satisfying year for the contest. There were a few artists that I went back through their backlog and am very happy that I got exposed to them via the competition this year.

It’s common in the music world. But it’s uncommon for pop music for sure. He’s right about how Eurovision is for entertainment more than it is for songwriting. I’m often so baffled that people actually don’t divert from pop music. I can’t imagine a life listening to pop my whole life b

This video is excellent! I disagree with one thing though, that’s not a bridge at the end of Amar Pelos Dois it’s a verse that’s been cropped, then the coda. A bridge would have sounded very different. Also I would have loved to see something about the chord structure of the song, seeing as pop songs tend to only have four chords and APD has many more, that would have been fascinating. But thanks for this brilliant insight into the best song to ever win Eurovision.

I told him because he is like what they say in the video, nobody knows him because the media do not divulge, he lives by teaching music ....

Today, because of RU-vid and Internet in general, is really easy to produce and publish your own song by creating fast food music, using cheap softwares and autotune without knowing a single shit about what your are doing. I think that today's music is good like it was 40 years ago, but the difference is that 40 years ago only the good musicians could get a contract with a recording label, but today no one needs this to be a true musician, you just need to follow the formula of success. Nowadays, we have good and bad musicians in the same spot, and the bad ones are receiving more attention because people usually loves to listen and watch to shit, thats why reality shows got more attention on television than interesting documentaries. The good artists are being overshadowed by the bad ones, this could happen in 1960's if Internet existed in that era, because anyone could publish their work even if it was horrible or not. I could say thousands of good artists from this generation, because we have really good music.

Folk interested in Portuguese rock can start by checking out these LPs: José Cid - 10 000 Anos Depois Entre Vénus e Marte www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3537 Petrus Castrus - Ascensão e Queda www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=11959 Banda do Casaco - Hoje Há Conquilhas, Amanhã Não Sabemos www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=16629 Regarding Pop music pretty much everything boils down to António Variações: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2XH5_qafR8k.html To this day pop musicians keep having success by simply doing covers of Variações. Great video. Cheers.

I think there is a little mistake here. Serbia's song in 2012, Ukraine's in 2014 and Montenegro's in 2015 have longer music introductions.
