Salvador Sobral from Portugal won the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv with the song Amar Pelos Dois. This is his winning performance together with his sister Luísa.
This singing of both siblings together - he the singer, she the songwriter - was one of the best moments in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Mi K yet the song is very simple and meaningful! This song only created by one people and they don't need eurovision winner to write the song and put a lot of famous art director to win! This show us that Eurovision is Not only pop music, rock music and dance music. This is by far the most memorable win in the 00s
Honestly, I think that if his sister were to sing this song Portugal still would've won. Such a remarkable voice, she doesn't need to scream in order to be heard or remembered.
Some people call him arrogant because of his words. But an arrogant man does not choose to share the greatest moment of his professional career with his sister. A beautiful gesture.
I came to Portugal for holiday but ended up with urgent eye surgery. While I was recovering at the hospital in Porto, I was told Sunday morning that the country had won the song contest. I then heard it for the very first time. Salvador Sobrals voice was very soothing while I was vulnerable, on my own in a country where wasn't able to understand anything. But people were friendly and I felt completely safe. So wherever I go, there will always be a chip of Portuguese in me. Regards from a deeply thankful Dane.
At first, I didn't like the song at all. But now I can understand why he won. At the beginning, Eurovision was a contest in which each country tries to show the world a piece of his culture, of his soul. But now, every country seems to present the same kind of commercial songs, in which the singer simply sings. This year, the humility, the identity, won in a contest full of "Spotify's songs" and the winner's final performance, with his sister, is the most beautiful performance a winner had ever made in Eurovision. Greetings from Spain
Pelayo Díaz Soto Most thankful for your comment, you understood the essence from it all. Salvador and his sister had the courage to do exactly the opposite that has been done until now. The simplicity and meeningfully lyric to a beautiful love song.

Salvador is a free spirit. He always talks what comes to his mind with no filters. He did not criticized his adversaries but the whole music panorama. He went on a mission not to win this contest but to show that goodl music can be made with just feelings and a voice as a tool with minimum instrument support.. He did not thought he could win but Europe surprised all of us with a beautiful response to his call for love. The right music, with the right man at the right time. That's it.
This here is in my opinion when Eurovision reached its peak. This isn’t my favourite winner of all time, and there have been amazing moments before and since, but this just encapsulated everything this contest is about. Regardless of our personal preferences and biases, it felt like for just one moment, all of Europe could come together and celebrate the victory of this man bringing his sister’s humble song to the world stage and succeeding, despite everything we thought we knew about this contest. It brought his country a victory for the first time, and despite all the lights shining down and cheering him on, he chose to share the moment with a person he loved, and all of Europe and Australia quietened to listen. Thank you Portugal, you gave this contest its heart. 🇵🇹 ❤️ 🇬🇧
Finally a young man has the courage to stand up for what a song should represent, the younger people of today badly needed a reality check, this brother and sister provided it, it's wonderful to see the respect they have for each other. Congrats from Ireland.
I wish the Irish to come up next year in their galic tongue :-) The irish song was strong and really dramatic (maybe too much?) and the german song was kindda plasticmusic - like many others. Regards from Germany
I,m glad this guy won the eurovision, because he deserved it! Means a lot of people actually still like music from the heart filled with emotion wich kinda surprises me in this generation. No special effects, no sexy dancers, no back vocals, no showing off and a loud beat. Just Him, his heart and voice. Like he said it at the end. Music is not fireworks but feeling. Well said. Bravo my friend! From Serbia.
Lucas Totally deserved... They won by both votes, he is actually a talented singer and the song is actual music... On top of that I totally agree with what he said about comercial music...
Indeed! While we live in a world with brainless teenagers acting like Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj are real artist... Yet there is still hope according to this winning song. Europe DOES have a taste. I didn't expect.
So you want Bulgarian grannies dancing with washboards in 11/8 time? Good luck to them. BUT - Bulgarian grannies dancing with washboards in 11/8 and singing in English "The universal constant is love" ... could mean a trip to Sofia next year!
One of the best Eurovision winners ever. He is so much into this song and the lyrics are beautiful. His speech about fast food music was on point. You can dislike the song, but saying it's "boring" or "dull" just shows you are insensitive and that's probably because of mass media.
I love how music has no language. Here's the proof, I can't understand what he's saying and I don't know why my tears are coming out. Congratulations Portugal !
Jorge Lisboa I really hope I can study Portuguese but I've already 5 languages to speak. Like, French is my native language, and then there are english, italian, japanese and korean. If I manage to speak these 4 language perfectly, then i'm going to learn portuguese next :)
@@jorca54 Menos, ok? Que tem isso a ver? Se ouvires algo que te emocione em malaio vais aprender a língua? Ganha juízo moço, e agradece um comentário sentido.
@@annettebe4666 Don't worry, it's in portuguese, but the main language is universal, it came from the heart. You study portuguese, one day if you can. It's not easy, but it's beautiful. Meanwhile, keep hearing it as art. All the best!
I don't understand why people say he only won because of his heart conditions. In Portugal we only found out about it after we chose him to compete in Eurovision, he always tried to keep it a secret so it didn't affect the voting. Eventually it got out because you know, journalists, but he never even said what the disease is and he prefers not to talk about it, once again because of the voting (and because no one has anything to do with it). Also I want to make sure you all know he's not either autistic or an ex-drug addict. He only did light drugs once during college (who didn't?). This is the way he is, and it's not fake. You can see his sister is already used to it, it's not new to her, he's just different, there are people like these and just because they're rare you don't get to call them autistic or fake. He has always been like this, since he participated in a singing competition here in Portugal back in 2009 (Ídolos). Just accept it, some people are different. One more thing, please don't say he's arrogant. He was only saying what he believes in, why should you blame him for that? He's not bashing the other singers, he liked some of the other songs (such as Italy and Belgium). He's criticising the path Eurovision has taken over the years and how it's more about the show (fireworks, etc.) than the music itself. I think it's better to speak his mind than be fake and pretend he's eurovision's biggest fan and loves everything and everyone. Have a nice day, and don't forget Eurovision was made to unite Europe, not break it
I didn't even realise he had a heart condition! I don't think that had an effect on his win whatsoever, the song was beautiful as were him and his sister's voices. Very happy with his win!
Everyone that sais all that negaticve things has the slightest idea about music. He won because he deserved it! The song was amazing full of melody and feelings! Stavroula from Greece!
People actually think he won because of his heart desease? He didn't even mention he had a heart condition, I bet most people don't even know! Stop being petty!
They melted my heart, brother and sister singing together. He did not want attention, he is so humble that he shared the victory with his sister. Never seen that before. He really deserved to win, so I'm very happy for him. I also love that the winning song is in Portuguese. It was about time! Parabéns Portugal!!! :D Love from Spain
Only now I noticed that Salvador thanks arranger Luís Figueiredo at the end. And rightly so; apart from the beautiful melody, the perfect chords and lovely lyrics the arrangement is also a masterpiece; so subtle, absolutely superb (listen to the peak between 5:38 and 5:46 and the bridge from C7 over B7b5 to Bb at 5:54). I thank you too, Luís.
That's so amazing! No words, only tears in my eyes. Beautiful language, great performance! Luisa has really beautiful voice too, they could sing a duet together, that is awesome. Congratulations from Russia! Parabéns!
In a contest full of so many flashy and in-your-face songs, seeing one guy singing his heart out in a simple yet so powerful ballad win not only the jury vote but also the public vote really gives me faith that the world has not forgotten how to appreciate real music. Haters will keep hating and claim that the voting was rigged or that people only voted because he had a health condition, but for some ignorance is incurable. I am so happy to see this win and I hope this contest will take a turn for songs that have more meaning over loud and generic "fast food" songs that are about as deep as a children's swimming pool. My faith in humanity has been restored, thank you Europe, see you all in Portugal next year.
It's so good to see the songwriter take centre stage. It is a song contest after all. Thank you, Salvador, for sharing your moment of glory with your talented sister xxx
We've been here since 1964. For over the years we've been underrated and even at a certain point we wouldn't even try hard to win this. But somehow we did it. We won both jury and public vote and most incredible of all, we did it in our native language. Just Salvador Sobral and his incredible voice singing a masterpiece composed by his incredible sister and an incredible crowd making silence to hear him. Thank you Europe (and Australia) for making me so happy, I have no words right now. #Lisbon2018 will leave you all speechless, I promise.
We were watching this performance right at that moment near this stage, you can even see us with tears in our eyes. and honestly should say, that was one of the most magical moments of my life. Louisa and Salvador created masterpiece. I forgot the last time when music got me to feel this deep and this is incredible! 😍greetings from Kyiv.
Really? Oh, you are so beautiful and the other girl too...you both made me on tears. Salvador has a unique voice and this song is really emotional! The Sobral siblings are lovely together!
The best score EVER by far! Do not forget that. The overwhelming majority of Europeans and Australians voted for this song. Received votes from all countries (televote), all! 30 times 12 points. 85% of the maximum score possible.
I broke into tears, watching this performance. When I close my eyes, I see images of my childhood; how me and my sisters play around without any worry in the world, when we were so innocent and so closely knit. The music does bring out these memories.
Parabéns Portugal! É um cançao totalmente com beleza e graça!! Especialmente porque eu falo português, 'amar pelos dois' fala ao meu coração. Besos do reino unido ♥♥♥
Como hermano entiendo el gesto de Sobral. Muy bien salir juntos a cantar, grandes artistas, protagonista tb a la autora, canción bella y todo made in Portugal.
Alin I personally voted 3 times for his song, because it's marvellous and I don't regret even one cent! At least he didn't get pity votes like the Bulgarian singer only because he is half Russian(he can't even speak proper Bulgarian) and Russia was banned from the competition this year. And this is coming from a Bulgarian.
Portugal, probably the most unsuccessful country in Eurovision history, suddenly produces one of the most emphatic winners ever. Eurovision fans live for moments like this :-)
Obrigado, obrigado, obrigado!!! Thank you Portugal, Salvador and Luísa. This contest needed this. An intimate song with feelings and words with a content. A song that doesn't need fireworks, djungeldrums, whips and whatever to transfer a genuine and true feeling. And finally, at last we don't have to listen to a thousand songs in a row, sung in an American accent accompanied by a thousand dancers, fireworks and waterdance, or what have you! Portugal, please give us back the true Eurovison with songs sung in languages spoken in Europe, and sungs that represent the musical tradition of each country. Amo Portugal!
My Precious... This is so beautiful, and broke my heart to see you and your beautiful sister singing together...you both love each other! Love you, guys!
How dare he, sing a song with meaningful lyrics, in his native language with no fireworks, or backup dancers or any special effects. Outrageous. He should have sung a bland pop song, had dozens of special effects all happening at the same time because that is clearly what people consider as real music nowadays. Seriously how dare he share his emotions trough a song, music is so the opposite of that...People are just so petty their favorite song didn't win that they can't recognize art when they hear it.
To be honest I dislike Salvador Sobral, not the song, that guy. He literally dishonested every other competitor by calling himself "the real music" and pretty much saying that they are "fireworks" if that quote was said by him when not winning he would be called douche but because he won it is a good quote... I really dislike him for that. There were many talented singers that put effort in their music and there are more emotions than just "love". I don't dislike the song tho. But even his sister has stronger voice than he does... he did not deserve to win as he was not the best singer. The song was fine, romantic, slow, peaceful... I like that... but he did not deserve to win, if it was performed by his sister (she has really amazing voice) then I would not really mind this song winning.
Daniela S occidentlis karma had meaningful lyrics too they just werent depressig ahahahah thing is - if you have a song with a touching story - anyone can win
This was one of the best moments of the competition for me. Good on them for allowing Luisa onto the stage. Both amazing talents from Portugal. Good luck in 2018 Lisbon!!
I am beyond ecstatic. Firstly , Salvador made history for Portugal, a country which never did well in Eurovision, by also scoring the highest winner ever in the history of this magnificent event. I cannot believe that this is actually a reality, even after a week since the finals took place. Can we just talk about the insane quality that this song is? Beautiful, romantic, a signal to stop in a mad speedy world , and definitely not the cheap pop that most people expect from Eurovision . One of the best winners ever. Eurovision in Kyiv will be remember as a turn point in bringing music back.
While watching this I was smiling all the time and thinking that your parents must be so proud. You are different and that is what our world needs now. Thank you for amazing performances
I am on the bus full of people, with the headphones in the ears, listening to this and smiling, with eyes full of tears while listening to this. Everybody's thinking I am crazy. Crying all alone on the road. But! This is so beautiful. Why is it so hard to bring REAL music, REAL art and REAL emotions to this world?
Dear Portugal. Salvador and Luisa!! Since a few weeks I havent watched this, but again my eyes are engulfed with tears and my heart full of joy & love. muito Obrigado, a very Well deserved winner ESC 2017
Portugal took a risk and look at how great it paid off! Yeah, other countries put on a great show, I mean Italy was amazing, but this was so great to watch too. Plus I don't speak the slightest amount of Portuguese, no idea what he was saying, but I was still emotionally there with him. And obviously millions of other people were too. That's why he deserved the win.
hello i am portuguese and, the song is about a love that never happened uncorresponded love , about someone, one person that loves so much, that can "love the other person" and also "for the other person"
Portugal didn't want Eurovision - so they threw in a no-effort jazz ballad, in their own language, that nobody would like ... They lost the gamble - europe and beyond loved the song, and Portugal is forced to host Eurovision this year.
Mai Nem A song with a meaning is a no-effort song ? Right mate .. I didn’t like the song much at first but it’s ok now, what really is important in music is the feelings that you pass to others. As a portuguese drummer ( musician ), I know how with an instrumment you can put all your feelings and messages through the art that is music People don’t respect meaningful music, which is sad.
@Prince Henry The navigator I loved the song, it just seems really weird that they chose to send in a song that, on the surface, has NO CHANCE WHATSOEVER of winning :) It won, lol. (thanks to people like me voting for it) The look of dismay on the Portuguese Finance Minister's face must have been something to behold!
He may not be the best winner Eurovision has ever seen, but his winning speech was the best speech Eurovision has ever seen! A statement standing for music against the rubbish we have today.Salvador is a legend!
I'm melting when listening to it... So beautiful! It's another level of contest, Eurovision will never be the same. And these words at the end from Salvador... So true! You don't have to twerk everywhere to get attention. Pure talent finally has won. Greeting from Poland
Love love love this song. Im from the netherlands but i was cheering so hard for portugal. This is one of the few times i actually liked an eurovision song. You did so well portugal, props!!
He is SUCH a nice person, I'm sooooo happy that he won, even Amar Pelos Dois wasn't my 1st. His song is one of the most unique song I have ever heard! Congratulations from B&H,see you in Lisbon next year!!!❤❤❤❤❤ #salvadorable❤❤❤❤
Well-deserved victory for Portugal. Congrats from deep within my heart. I am so excited for next year's eurovision song contest. The fact that it will take place for the first time in Portugal makes it even more exciting for me. I can't wait for it :)
People react badly to whatever song wins because their national pride is wounded. In tribal stuff vs. art, it's the art that always loses. But nothing can change the fact that Salvador and his lovely sister Luisa created a timeless piece of art :)
One of the greatest moments in ESC-history. So beautiful to see sister composer and brother performer together on stage after the most deserved win in ESC-history.
If one day someone asks about me Say that I lived just to love you Before you, I only existed Tired and without a thing to offer My dear, listen to my prayers I ask you to come back, that you come back to love me I know we can't love alone Maybe little by little you can learn again My dear, listen to my prayers I ask you to come back, that you come back to love me I know we can't love alone Maybe little by little you can learn again If your heart doesn't wish to do so To feel the passion, If it doesn't want to suffer Without making plans about what will happen My Heart can love for the both of us
The Greeks Once upon a time in ancient times said that through music express the deepest feelings of people. A representative of Portugal it is shown and demonstrated at this year's Eurovision Song Contest. Indescribably glad for the victory! IAnd the most important thing is the whole of Europe recognize quality of real art music. Infinite times BRAVO Salvadore . And thank you for every emotion that you share with all of us! Salvador is proof that we can always be original
Not a Eurovision fanatic, I used to say the event had given us not any great song apart from 'Waterloo'. Right now, I've changed my mind and cannot but listen it all over again. Given that I understand Italian reasonably, I can make some sense of what they're singing, but I know this: it's one of the most marvelous songs I've ever heard. Salvador e Luisa, thanks a lot. You are right now a major part of my 2017 soundtrack.
Portugal has the best song, and deserve to win..a beautiful music and lyrics. A song were salvador sings love, a song whch is different from the others, that touched our hearts..that toked us to a diferent dimension, a perfect song...
Congratulations Salvador and Luisa. You are great artists but also great personalities too.Thank you for the amazing feelings that this song causes to my soul and so many people's souls also.
Words of a legend ❤️❤️❤️ well done Salvador, what a victory for music and quite courageous to say those words on the contest of disposable music. I can only imagine how much he and other normal musicians suffered through the most of the acts.
Portugal and Bulgaria had the best songs, period. One of the few moments when I chose my favorites right. The big surprise was Moldova though. Good Job to our neighbor, Epic Sax Guy! xD
Such a beautiful song, beautiful music, beautiful brother and sister bond. Thank you very much. I enjoy watching and listening to this performance. God bless you
Salvador y Luisa son geniales, me encantan, dos estilos diferentes, pero tan bellos cantando juntos, los amo, desde México 🇲🇽 que bueno que ganó Portugal 🇵🇹
I don't understand all the people who are complaining. Don't they know what Eurovision is about? Didn't they watch the show and realized that it was about celebrating diversity? Thanks to artists like Salvador and his sister this show became a little diverse! It's easy to follow the mainstream, having the courage to be a little different and to show it on stage - THAT'S beauty! Those who complain about his looks or movements are just ugly!
How is that diversity? Just because it's a song from 100 years ago? Or because it sounds like it has been played a million times in a portuguese restaurant?
So a song "from 100 years ago" is not allowed to participate in a contest of the 21st century? Maybe you should just learn what diversity is about. It starts with respect! And I hope this song will be played in many restaurants all over Europe from now on!
