In today's video we're unboxing some huge amaryllis bulbs from ColorBlends as well as showing how to plant them up and care for them over the next few weeks. I think most people plant their bulbs in late October or early November so they'll have blooms around Christmas but I'm completely happy to be late and see blooms after Christmas. It's a fun thing to have in the house before, during, or after the Holidays!

Oh how beautiful those will be in their containers! Just wanted to add a helpful "staking" hint, hopefully. I use "porcelain doll stands", by sliding the foot plate under the pot from the back. Most of them are "height adjustable", so they can "grow" with the blooms. Hope this helps someone. Great vlog. See you tomorrow and God bless.

great idea! The base on those doll stands and the loop should be perfect. I have used the metal with loop flower stakes before but they often fall over too. Now I wish I had not donated the doll stands I had!

@@Bamboo4U2 Thank you. They have worked out great for me, but I will admit the idea began with me using about 4 of them with a "wild and unruly" cactus I had yrs ago. Some of them I had to remove their base and stick inside the pot. Great find. Thanks again and God bless.

ok, project #1,488,985! i was just looking at some galvanized pots at Joann's yesterday and telling my 3 year old granddaughter i really need some of those!! and now i know why!!!! i love to keep them indoors for the holidays and i agree, seeing them in january helps lessen the shock of no more decorations out, haha... these bulbs are FABULOUS!! oh my gosh. .back to colorblends i go! i cannot wait to see your "amaryllis on parade" in a few weeks!!! it will be spectacular!!!

I just ordered my Amaryllis bulbs yesterday! No lie! Perfect timing! I sent several as “kits” to far away relatives as Christmas gifts. I agree that even if they don’t bloom in time for the holidays they will enjoy some beautiful life in the dreary days of January. I splurged and bought myself some bigger bulbs to enjoy. I planted a Dancing Queen amaryllis last year and it was gorgeous. Two flower stalks and each stalk had 3 or 4 huge flowers. Be patient with them. They sit there quietly for a few weeks before you see anything happening. I got that bulb as a return to the garden centre. The customer said she had it for 2 weeks and nothing happened.

I bought 5 Amaryllis about 10 years ago and planted them in my garden. I live in Windermere, Florida, zone 9. Ours bloom April through May and have multiplied. I have about 20+ now. Gorgeous plant!

I'm definitely going to try planting my own this year! Last year, I bought a container with 3 bulbs from Costco and they bloomed like crazy. I thought they were done and gave them to my daughter and they rebloomed! I was fixated on your chandelier - I would love to see the whole thing :)

You inspired me to try Amaryllis for the first time. They seemed too exotic. I purchased 3 that came in a kit with a thick coat of wax covering 3/4 of the bulb. They’re meant to grow in their case and treated as an annual, I guess. They already have 2-3 inch stalks. I’m excited. Next year I’ll definitely try the natural way. Thanks for your year round inspiration. I thought gardening was over by November. I’m so glad to have my hands in soil all year! Many blessings to you and you’re beautiful family.

I already have 8 bulbs - 4 at home and 4 in the office and all of them are sleeping at the moment. This video of course makes me want to order lots more. :D But I can't bear throwing them out after blooming as the leaves are so nice and green. I can treat tulips as annuals in pots because their foliage withers away.

Hi Laura! I live on a tropical island in the Maldives. It's super hot over here. Can these bulbs perform well in our climate? Also, how do we fertilise a bulb that is in a bulb vase with water?? So easy, I used to be timid about growing them! She put out an aftercare video last year that is super helpful. After they have bloomed, I keep mine in a bright window and water sparingly throughout the year. Their leaves will continue to grow and then in early fall you want to put them in a dark cool place...this will reset the bulb to then hopefully bloom for ya!

Hi Laura!! 👋🤗 How are you & your lovely family? You are an Amazing, talented & Creative woman. *I already owned 5 Amaryllis that did Great from 2021 Dec to Spring 2022. I ordered 2 more in May & Kept them in the Basement from then till now, during that period they started sprouting leaves (unplanted) should i have chilled them in the Refrigerator? Can i plant them now? The ones that already bloomed are on the Porch (they got lots of sun during summer) will take them in about 2nd week of September. Much Blessings & Peace to you all. 🙏❤

I have a general potting up plants question. Does your soil gush out the bottom when you water the potted plants? I noticed you normal don't put anything at the bottom of your pots when you are planting them up. Sometimes, like today's video, you'll put a coffee filter. I put a rock at the bottom because my mom always put one, small, flat rock at the bottom of each pot she filled with soil and plants. Should I stop doing that?

Just FYI, this time of year you can buy them almost anywhere. They have them at Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart, even Kroger has them. They won't be the colossal ones but they are beautiful nonetheless and you won't feel as bad at the end of the season if you decide to toss the bulb.

I think like most amaryllis growers it is a once a year gift thing. However, we have overwintered them and have been successful in getting a growing plant the second year. However, looking at your bright growing area in comparison to our "sun window", we don't get a second year bloom most of the time, even after doing your suggestions. Since I use LED grow lamps for seed starting, could we use an LED grow lamp to keep the bloom stem not getting as tall or leggy? If so what would the recommended timeframe be, such as the beginning of the bloom stem growth until the formation of the flower bud? Thanks for your recommendations.

Hi, Laura. Amaryllis plants are toxic to kitties and should be kept out of Cheddar and Russell's reach. I just wanted to point that out as many don't know that plants from the lily family cause vomiting, hypotension, respiratory and renal failure in cats. Lovely video as always.

I just went back an watched the older video, question, does your bulb grow over time like a tulip will.? I bought the Amaryllis in the box maybe 4 yrs ago now, I actually don't do anything with it after the leaves start dying back, nothing, not even water. I just watered it 4 days ago an it's already showing growth almost 2", just wondering if I'd been transplanting it would the bulb have gotten nice an huge by now.?

I have never found an outdoor amaryllis RU-vid video. I'm also zone 9a and have amaryllises in my flowerbed. Unfortunately I don't have much experience, only two springs seasons with them. Definitely, fertilize after they are done blooming with a bulb tone or plant tone. In other videos, Laura suggests those for bulbs and I'm guessing that would be helpful for our outdoor amaryllises too. I think I watered mine too much this year. I don't know. It will be interesting to see what bulbs come back for me this spring. I have white and red variety.

I think I'll dig mine up and set them a little higher. Most of mine are planted up right to their necks. I hope yours enjoy their new sunnier location.

Just came back from buying an amaryllis at Lowe's. I live in 9B zone, so I am going to research on how I can plant these outside - moving here from North East, it never occurred to me until Laura mentioned in this video that in upper zones they can be planted outside. Beautiful! I never toss my Amaryllis, I've had mine blooming since 2009 when I first got my first Bulb and I wish I could get more. They seem to be so pricy.

I’ve been waiting for this! You have inspired me to try amaryllis. I made 9 amaryllis pots for party favors for my moms 83rd birthday party. Thanks for sharing your passion for gardening.

Oh my goodness, it hurt my heart that people throw amaryllis away. I guess I'm lucky to live in a warm climate that they are planted directly in my garden outside. I probably have 50 or more. My mom has more than I do. If you throw yours away please get with me. I'll pay the shipping for you to send them to me. 😊
