The pancakes, my favourite is the peanut pancake. It's crushed roasted peanuts and sugar. No peanut butter. :) I love it because the roasted peanuts elevate the taste of the pancake, unlike other flavours.
One Angmo woman when first stepped onto Singapore, said she's in the most expensive city. To self-fulling prophesize, she went to a cafe and came out mumbling, "$7.00 for a cup coffee ... very expensive". Wah Lao Eh! Go food court or hawker centre to drink lah! One dollar plus only. If you stay in a no-frill hotel, take the bus or MRT, eat at hawker centres or coffee shops* and buy your stuff at a supermarket, Singapore is not expensive. There're many tourist spots which are free. Do your homework before you come. *A coffee shop in SG in not like a cafe in the West. You can have a cup of coffee for $1.40 and wanton noodle or chicken rice for $4.00
I wholeheartedly agree with this. The problem with lots of foreigners here is they like to bring their 'lifestyle' in and generally refuse to go local. How many foreigners do you see in the heartlands like Tiong Bahru? rare if any.... But that is the food that Singaporeans eat everyday. My advice for foreigners who find Singapore too expensive for their lifestlye: better going off somewhere else where you can form your expat bubble enclave.
When it comes to food in Singapore, you are able to find very affordable food and very expensive food. Thank you for doing the research. Unlike some youtubers who went in search of Chilli Crab, ate at a restaurant in Little India and complained that Singapore is so expensive.
Welcome to Singapore. If you are srill in sg, you should visit Old airport road and Chinatown smith street hawker too! Old airport road has yummy char siew at roast paradise, also you can try the soup version of prawn noodles!
I'm a Singaporean who had lived overseas such as Australia and I am truly shocked on why Singapore is the cosliest city. Sydney is worse. Singapore is cheap. Don't be fooled by some expar magazines who only patron expensive restaurants when they go on holidays
Yes, the prawn mee hawker stall stated he would have to raise prices. But his prawn mee was worth more than $4, to me. I guess prices are going up everywhere in the world. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Hi Grifs ,good morning to you. Just happened to watch your videos n im glad that you have done your homework well before coming to Singapore. The next hawker center that i would like to recommend is at Tampines street 11 , called the Round Market. It served many types of our local food at a reasonable price with a good portion n taste. But by the afternoon most of the stalls will be closed. So if you happens to be there, go early to avoid the crowds . The coffee are good too. There's a stall selling peanut, coconut and red bean pancake at a coffee shop adjacent to the hawker center. Its very popular stall with a long queue. Do not get it at the hawker center cos its vegetarian pancake n taste very different. Remember its at a coffee shop outside the hawker center . Enjoy yourself if you are there .
Hi Grif, Welcome to Singapore! :) Hope you enjoyed yourself. In Singapore, every Hawker Centre has its gems and misses. Generally, you can't go wrong. Regarding the orange coconut filling, the shredded coconut is mixed with an orange palm sugar and hence, its colour. If you get a chance to try out the local Indian fare known as Putu Mayam you will get that orange palm sugar too. Putu Mayam is like a patty of steamed rice noodles eaten with fresh coconut and orange palm sugar. Goes well with cofee and tea!
hi hi, thanks for the video. The last part of your video, to answer to your question - as to why is the coconut orange :) is cos the seller uses "red sugar" in the coconut mix. Red sugar is the one among the variation of sugar types that we can find in our asian groceries stalls.
Yes the premium char siew would have been the better char siew and they sold out super fast. Tiong Bahru is a good option. Other hawker centres to visit includes Old Airport Road, Chinatown Complex, Bendemeer, Serangoon Gardens...
Hawker foods are cheap because they serve the locals ... as for tourists like you, you should go to touristy spots like Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa, MBS, etc and try getting your 3 meals there. You'll then realised why Singapore is THE most expensive city! Locals eat just 1 meals at these tourist spots and they have to tighten their belts for the whole week!
What rubbish u talking.. local go to local hawker which is why is not most expensive city in the world.. as u have said, locsl dont dine at tourist spot... why is the need to eat only 1 meal a day... full of s**t
I travelled alone to SG and there's a famous brand called Ya Kun Kaya Toast that offers really nice and simple eggs and jam toast sandwich. Their coffee is unique because its 1/2 coffee 1/2 tea.
The best way to gauge the cost of living is not to convert SGD to USD, use same dollar comparison e.g big mac or coke index and you will know how expensive this city is.
When you were eating the char siu the best place to eat is over your left shoulder ...Joo Chiat Beef King .their brisket soup with yellow noodle is the best thing..the soup is the same master stock that has boiled for 50+ years..the soup is alive..you missed out.
