Dell's XPS took a very good lesson from Apple in that your interface with a notebook- screen, keyboard, speakers, touchpad- is *extremely* important, which is something that other brands are still figuring out to this day, but they still haven't figured out the lesson that Apple has learned from their crippled Intel MBPs: that there is a limit to the sacrifices you should make for slimness. You can see it in the new MBPs, where they abandoned the race for being the slimmest and just settled on something sensible. Just bringing the full depth most of the way towards the lip solved so many of the problems they created for themselves, it's crazy. I'm sure that a lot of very significant watts could have been freed up if they abandoned this chassis design where it grows ever thinner towards the lip. It might look very pretty, yes, but it sacrices a boatload of not only performance, but all of your ports! It's a nearly three thousand dollar device and it has fewer ports than a chromebook! It's a business laptop that requires a bloody adaptor to hook a wireless mouse and a projector to it! We have to give them points for the many things they do right- high battery life with high resolution screen and powerful processor, paired with good build quality, speakers, trackpad and keyboard. And, something rare in thinner devices, fully upgradable RAM! That's great stuff. If this GPU inched towards 75~90 Watts, and I'm entirely onfident that's very doable in a chassis with this footprint, then we'd be having a conversation about how this is an *incredible* device with almost no compromise. As it is, it's leaving too much on the table. Seriously, the Aero 15 crammed a 105 W 3070 in a chassis two mm thicker, and Dell is much larger than Gigabyte, especially in mobile devices. Apple figured out that virtually everyone would rather have half again the performance for a truly negligible increase in thickness and heft. Also, 720p webcam on a $3k 2023 XPS, what the fuck Dell? This is your flagship "do it all" business notebook, but it can't manage a decent Zoom meeting? At least the mic is good, I suppose. There's never been a generation of GPUs that have enabled XPS-like devices the way the RTX 4000 does, and yet Dell has simply elected to fail.
@NotebookcheckReviews
@NotebookcheckReviews Год назад
I agree. The overall experience with the XPS is still pretty great, for precisely what you mentioned. Fantastic screen and build quality, a good keyboard and trackpad and pretty good speakers. It just falls apart slightly when you push it too far. So deciding to put a 4070 in here might have been the wrong decision since it communicates this puppy is made for much more than it can actuaally deliver!

I think a higher TDP for the GPU makes sense if the XPS 15 used the P-series CPUs from Intel or Ryzen 7, but Intel's H-series is just far too hot and power hungry.
@TotallyNotEvil910
@TotallyNotEvil910 Год назад
@@electricmiragemedia But they aren't! Notebookcheck's newest video is on the Flow X16, which is pretty much what I said: about two mm thicker than the XPS, and with that, manages to cram a well-behaved 100 W GPU alongside a H-series i7. It even was much better I/O, and costs about the same, or less, than the XPS. Dell absolutely could have done, they straight up chose not to.

I got the 12th gen 3050ti XPS 15 for 1,400 GBP and it's an incredible machine. It's virtually silent when performing office work with the battery able to last around 8 hours. It can handle pretty much all games I play (sometimes I do need to drop the graphics), however, I do wish I could've had the option to spec it with a 3060. Despite this, the price dell is asking for the 13th gen model is absoulutely outrageous. If I were buying a laptop right now I'd probably just get my 12th gen again.

Hello, I mainly edit 4k 60p videos on Davinci Resolve and do some light gaming on the side. I curently have a desktop : i7 8700k with 1080ti 11gb and 32gb of ram. Is this laptop a good replacement? One goes for 2,195.50 euros on sale right now with i9-13900h 13th gen - RTX 4070 - 32 gb of ram. I know that editing sofware are getting more and more GPU dependent so I am kind of scared to do the move, and also does not have 1000 more to spend. What are your thoughts or recommendation? Even if you want to do gaming, it is hard to justify the 10% increase in performance of 50W 4070 vs. 50W 4060. If you don't plan on gaming all the time on this, it doesn't matter at all. You won't notice a thing. If you do want to game, look for Gigabyte Aero with 4070/4080.

Anything above 4060 just isn't worth it. The system doesn't have the space or components to properly keep the device cool, so even though the 4070 on paper is "more powerful", you get the same if not worse performance due to the thermal throttling.

I suggest getting something with at least 85 % coverage for AdobeRGB (this usually means almost 100% for DCI-P3 and sRGB) and at least QHD resolution. IPS and OLEDs are a relatively safe bet, and while the latest MiniLED Displays sound great on paper, check if you can use the backlight as a single zone, in my experience that makes for much more realiable and accurate color reproduction. After last year's offerings in the notebook lineup, this year's seems like a big step down. The 40 series GPUs seem weaker than last year's (maybe because of the crippled TDP) and I don't think we've seen or heard much from AMD's side as yet. It was enough for me to keep my 2017 MBP 15 for mobile use and decide to, instead, build my own desktop PC for working and gaming at home.

The 40-series GPUs are a lot better than anything you can get last year. They're a little bit underwhelming compared to other laptops 40-series with higher TGPs but even the entry level 4050 model is more than 30% faster than the 3050ti which was the fastest GPU you could get. 40-series are a lot more power efficient meaning Dell's low TGP targets don't hamper performance as much as they did last year.

This Dell XPS 15 once again feels like Dell's neglected middle child. It's using a 4 year old design that severely thermal throttles AGAIN, it has fewer ports than even the 2021 and later MacBook Pros, and battery life isn't anything too special given the price and meh performance. Honestly, if you're an Apple user, you're laughing with your 2021 or later MacBook Pro right now, because you're fine right now. If you're a Windows user, just go for a comparable gaming laptop, like the Eluktronics Mech 16 / XMG Neo 16 or pretty much any other "comparable" Windows laptop. Heck, Just Josh on RU-vid showed that Dell actually somehow disabled Intel's thermal throttle limit of 100 Celsius and set it to 108. It ended up thermal throttling and the chassis ended up becoming hotter than any laptop I've or Josh had seen to date. Do NOT buy the XPS 15. Go with an XPS 17 or another laptop.
@NotebookcheckReviews
@NotebookcheckReviews Год назад
I guess Dell does not expect most user will run 24/7 Cinebench runs on this one. Which I would say is a fair assement. Comparing this one to an XMG Neo 16 is not the right fit, don't you think? But machines like Lenovo Yoga 9 Pro or the Aero 16 I mentioned in the review show that you can adequately cool high-end components in a slim chassis and still give the user a bit more options when it comes to IO. That said, if you like a clean design and do not stress the core components heavily under prolonged use, the XPS 15 is still a fantastic machine ... within its limits.
@cameronbosch1213
@cameronbosch1213 Год назад
@@NotebookcheckReviews I'm sorry, but I disagree with you. This laptop is WAY too hot for the components it's trying to cool. Like, Just Josh showed that the i7 version was thermal throttling not at 100C, but around 107C. And the chassis was REALLY hot. Honestly, Dell should really redesign this laptop. When even APPLE can make something better in a similar chassis (the 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pros), then Dell needs to step it up or get out.
