It's quite common among miniature painters to use your hands as a pallet.

you could actually do this with a small travelers watercolour set they actually last a long time if you are not doing large backgrounds and a few specific pencils like the watercolour pencil she was using and maybe a 2h as its easier to draw lighter and rub out then hb.

The amount of time it takes to learn to draw or paint really well is amazing, it takes a few months to a few years and that is so cool that you can learn something in such a short amount of time
