Hello RU-vidrs! Welcome to the next episode in the British Rowing Trials November 2022 series. In this episode we get to hop onto the rowing machine and see how fast we can cover 2000m. A 2k erg test is one of the hardest physical challenges that one can do in sport and recommend that any fit person should give it a try! The aim is to get the cut off to qualify for the 5000m row on the water the day after the 2000m row on the rowing machine.

How do you just stand up at the end? For me it feels like I'm breathing through a straw after a 2K. You're a beast. Can tell you weren't overwhelmed by your success, but you got the job done. Don't dwell on the negative, just use the experience to go forward. It's impossible to stay at a constant mental peak, just like it's impossible to remain on a physical peak.

Great work CAM, you truly killed it! Everything was spot-on except your ole' fallback of a finish where you took your legs out of the race and finished with arms pulls only. PB"S will come and go, sometimes when we least expect them, but all are truly hard earned and well deserved, and so was this effort on that erg!! Stay mentally strong and you'll recover for that next race! Who knows, maybe even another PB! "Oh Yeah!"

@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan Год назад
Thanks will. On my pb i was the closest I've been to flat pacing. Think there's a combo with the individual and the training that individual is doing. Technically I should be able to do the same but the middle k would be significantly harder. Not sure if my body is in shape to deal with the extra stress currently

In something like this is it beneficial in hold back a little because you know you have a 5k on the water the next day or does the system reward the erg more? Liked the race plan, nice job
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan Год назад
I think it could reward you to be a bit fresher. Realistically athletes "should" be able to do both high efforts back to back. Also depends where the coach sees you going gif you get selected so water performance or erg might be looked at differently for differtn athletes

Love your videos and have been following the journey for some time. Just watching your technique in this trial, and I was thinking, your arms look like they're partially flexed at the elbow from the catch through the entire stroke. From a physiology point of view, this seems like a slight inefficiency, because you're expending energy to keep a flexed position instead of allowing straight arms to transmit the force from your legs effortlessly through your elbow ligaments. I'm not an exercise physiologist or professional rower or something like that, just have an interest. Anyway, incredible time!
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan Год назад
Yeah arms definitely bent. As you'll have seen in the videos over the years it's something I have done most of the time and work on frequently. You might not notice as the camera angle exaggerates the bend but there is a significant difference on the right vs left arm. A result of sweep rowing for many years. It does create a potential inefficiency. Not so much spending more energy but making it harder to connect the handle to the legs. Unfortunately the erg doesn't necessarily reward the greatest technique like the water does.

@christianbach9099
@christianbach9099 Год назад
Hi Cam, congrats on your time, very nice effort. I do have a question on technique. On video it looks like your arms are bent at the catch. I always tried to fully extend them so I do not need to hold against the drive from the legs. I wonder whether I am missing a decisive point here. What do you think. Nice content keep it up.
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan Год назад
If you can, keep your arms straight. Mine bend as a result of my time spent sweep rowing and my technique deficiencies. Ideally I'd have them straight but erg doesn't really reward the best technique like the water does!

I am really very curious about ‘drag settings’. * Does it matter which drag setting is used in competition, or can each rower choose whichever he likes? Personally, I’m dialled in @ 115 at the moment for training, but I have never competed in indoor erg competition. Thanks so much for your attention, love your videos! and admire your dedication and achievements!!
@CameronBuchan

Most competitions you can do whatever you like. For national team trials like this one you heavy weight men are supposed to do 138
@johngibson9671
@johngibson9671 Год назад
@@CameronBuchan Thank you! Very much appreciated….it’s a big topic of discussion amongst my friends at the local gym….it’s natural to believe the lower settings make it easier to row a given distance fast, but that’s a bit of an illusion, as your DF videos clearly explain. 138! Omg…I am 202 kilos and 2 metres tall….maybe I’ll get a break as I’m 65 yrs old! But I’m not planning on trying out for the Canadian National team anytime soon lol Cheers Cameron, thanks again

Yep, you definitely didn’t seem your usual self before starting this 2K - the body language said a lot. The most noticeable difference was the finish when you’re usually “hanging out yer arse”as they would say in Denny & Dunipace, but you got up and walked off! Hope the on the water 5K went well despite a sharp turn - that’s a dumb idea as they are supposed to be testing your speed over a distance not ability to turn a boat which is where you could lose time 🤪

Hmm I felt for you at those last strokes, that would have sucked. The mental toughness you've got to physical pain is incredible though. I think you can't change your bent forearm grip at this point in your career but it seems all the pros have that same grip with slightly tensed/bent arms so I can't criticize as a couch potato garage-rower, but my old coaches always told us so many great pros had some bad habits so yeah who knows maybe it doesn't really matter. I just think legs stronger than arms so bent arms could result in more fatigue than you need to accumulate even if you don't even feel it and hey 6 minutes with kinda bent arms maybe it's not actually fatiguing you at all
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan Год назад
Yeah completely my fault but we move. Bent arms for me definitely aren't getting fatigued, the straighter arms do help transfer power differently though. That's where I'd find gains. Work in progress and like you said, hard habit to break!
