I currently own a Japanese model 1, an american model 2, and have owned a bunch of other models before... I bought this console a fee months ago and I believe it's the best Megadrive I've ever had. Such a cool product.

Heh, I figured that it would work with 32X since it's obviously not emulating - this "clone" has one thing that a lot of others don't - the Genesis A/V Out, which the 32X depends on for video input from teh console. The Genesis and 32X work as two machines, each with their own processes and their own video output; the Genesis produces its own video output, while the 32X places video output of its own on top. The 32X's video signal is just layered on top and sent through to the Video out of the 32X to the TV. So the bulk of the work that the 32X does is usually with the sprites/foreground stuff, while the Genesis is relegated to render backgrounds and such. This still works because it frees up the Genesis to use additional colors for backgrounds, while the 32X can use a palette of its own. So, in theory, a MegaSG could probably "play" 32X games with the 32X stacked on top (and perhaps some tweaks to the firmware to work with the 32X hardware), but since it doesn't have a Genesis A/V out to send the signal out to the 32X, it wouldn't produce the video output correctly. I suppose if the Analogue DAC included a Genesis A/V out, it might work? But then it's a matter of whether the signal conversion would introduce any lag compared to the video signal produced by the 32X. THAT might look weird if they were not in sync. As for the sound, I believe that the MegaSG tries to emulate the Model 1's sound hardware, while this console likely uses one of those clone YM2612 chips that are available on the market (same chip used by those Master System adapter carts with built-in FM Synthesis) - while pretty accurate as far as sounds and tones go, it's the main reason why the Mega SG sounds more "brilliant". The brilliance is all up to user preference, but luckily, Analogue includes the tools in the menu to adjust to your liking, if you want to flatten it out a bit to sound more like a Model 2. Overall, this would be better if it didn't cost as much as it does. For that price, you may as well get an actual Model 2 Genesis.

Looks like it That the 32X works indicates that this indeed replicates the Model 2 VA4. The Model 3 VA1 used the same ASIC, the Sega 315-5960 (which contains both the 68k and Z80 CPUs, VDP, FM synthezier, I/O controller and TMSS ROM on a single die), but disconnected a number of pins required for the 32X, PBC, Virtua Fighter, and the Game Genie to work correctly. On a side note, the large chip at the center of your Model 2 VA1 is not the CPU, but an ASIC containing the VDP, FM synthesizer, I/O controller, and TMSS ROM. The 68K and Z80 CPUs are the square and rectangular chips above the cart slot.

To me the sound chip still sounds better on the model 1 but its really neat that this exists. I might consider it if a model 1 version wasade available.

Need to get / make a spacer for the 32x. If you dig, there's some innovative stuff coming out of China. It's like digging through a crazy estate sale, where nobody speaks your language. (Nice Wicked shout out! That guy has saved me a ton of money)

THanks for doing this video so I didn't have to. I bought one about a year ago and never got around to really outlining its features and compatibility. I was disappointed that mine still had a lot of VDP noise/interference through the audio output; it was a problem I've encountered on a couple different original Model 2 units as well. Did yours suffer the same issue? It didn't sound like it, you would often hear it on the Sega screen in Sonic games when it transitions between black and white and when the machine is loading/moving sprite data.; it sounds like buzzes and clicks. The only other issue is that the S-video output is a bit too bright, probably the wrong value cap or resistor in-line with the signal. The same issue was apparent with your unit as well. Besides those things, this machine would be my default Genesis unit. IT EVEN PLAYS PAPRIUM. I've been meaning to try and fix the VDP interference or contact the guy who (re)designed the board to see if they have a solution, or if they are even aware of the problem to begin with.

I have my original Model 1 HDG Mega Drive hooked to up to my 4k tv with the rad2x cable, and it looks wonderful in my honest opinion.

Out of curiosity, have you tried the game gargoyles? It has known issues with clone systems and doesn't even work on official Genesis 3s since it used a bug that was fixed in later revisions of the Genesis.

If you look at the photos on the product page, there seems to be a similar clone of an SNES and some kind of NEO GEO setup. I'd buy a good SNES clone right now since I missed out on the Analogue Super NT and they haven't said a word about if or when they'll offer more for sale.

Would be interesting if they created one with SegaCD support.

Some model 2 revisions are not compatible with Knuckles Chaotix. If this thing is based on model 2 architecture, it would be interesting to see if it passes that test. I did a vid on testing compatibility with all model 2 revisions and all 32X revisions. I was surprised by some of the successes and failures. Some made it several minutes into gameplay before failing.

32x Doom with the rom patch that replaces all the last levels that were missing or were not added on the original cartridge and I think it uses the Atari Jaguar stage levels

Imo the blue color is less blue on the clone, a bit more faded for sonic, and on green hill the blue sky looks a bit purplish, otherwise all pretty good

True story, I intend to backwards engineer a sega genesis at some point, and build something like this, but I'd have different mods implemented certainly.

I liked it a lot, the sound seems better than the SG, and it's real hardware, not an FPGA. Pity it doesn't have Sega CD, but with that Onion Teradrive, that could be achieved. Too bad that I went to the shop and it was sold out... :-(

I think you mistake the CPU. On your model 2 it's on the upper right hand side the Motorola 68000 that would be your CPU . What you were looking at that's the same as more like a multi-purpose chip that they've used in things like the model 3 and the nomad. So something in there has to be replacing the Motorola processor. Probably the chip that you thought was the CPU on the newer one the reason it's a slightly different revision is because the integrated the 68,000 processor in the newer one which is similar to what they have on the model 3. Possibly on The nomad as well. Which explains why you don't have a Sega CD connector because the model 3 stripped away that when they did the all-in-one chip. Now the trick would be if it has Master system support integrated into the board which for example on a model 3 or 8 nomad you actually had to do an actual wire modification from one of the pins on that pack to one of the connectors on the cartridge slot. And if you were to do an ever drive with Sega CD support you would have to do a modification as well on a model 3 or nomad to get the proper audio

If you ever want to use a CRT this is way better than a mega SG its up to 200 now

Why did you compare the audio to the Mega SG instead of the real Model 2 Genesis you had in your hand?! From what I can tell the custom box actually sounds more like an original than the SG which does not sound like original hardware unless you enable the Lowpass filter, you need to adjust the filter and cutoff frequencies to get that warmer sound like an original, otherwise it's way too "tinny" like in this video.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I honestly prefer the audio snippets from this unit over the snippets played with the MegaSG. This unit was lacking a little bit of clarity, and the drum samples were a bit crackly, but the sound seemed a bit richer, with more midrange. Again, I recognize that I am probably in the minority with this opinion. If it says anything, I think the OST for Vectorman sounds kinda lame in stereo (that hard panning was ugly)

Why would you recommend a clone over this? This uses original SEGA Genesis ICs like the CPU (that's why it runs 32X no problem), so its technically not a clone but a reversed-engineered SEGA Genesis MoBo with modern components, this is actually MUCH BETTER than any clone, FPGA or not, as all the processing is done by original ICs. This is akin to the NT Mini from Analogue but without all the publicity stunts and without the $500 price tag, sadly, it doesnt seem to be available anymore. Shout out to the guy who made this!
