I remember seeing gamesack every other Sunday (here in Brazil the episodes are always out on Sunday morning). Is was still in school at the time (2014, 2016) and I remember downloading games that they reviwed to play during class on my PSP. God dammit, where those years went?
@@KokoTheGorilla69 When you're school-age four years is a HUGE stretch of time. Just think how much changed, and all that happened, between freshman and senior year of high school!
@@texboy98 Me too, I lived in Recife, PE, on business from 2012-2016, and Gamesack was always something that I looked forward to on Sundays. Well, it still is, LOL!
friend of mine doesn't get sarcasm in text form, but then again he's sleep and calorie deprived and mods Mechwarrior 5, so his sadness keeps that from being applicable.
According to Krikzz's changelog there's been a bunch of updates since this review. It's now in V4.04 and for example multi bin support for CD games was added in 4.01. My own cartridge is in the mail at the moment, upgraded after good experiences with the budget model X3.
It’s prob the absolute best everdrive and mose advanced everdrive in his entire lineup . They all rock but this one in particular just really stands out .
Man... So many little disappointing bugs. It sounds like Krikzz rushed this one a bit. Seems like it needed a bit more time in the oven before release. This is most definitely not quite up to Krikzz's usual quality standards. Kind of a shame. Hope these issues get fixed soon!
It is and I hope they are fixed soon as well. But I also do hugely respect what they are doing here and how much more difficult this is than just making an Everdrive-type device to run ROMs on the system they were designed for. A lot of the Sega CD was just using the power of the Genesis but there were quite a few custom chips as well and to handle those through FPGA? Well, that is complex.
I seem to remember most of these products (both Krikzz and Terraonion) launching with hardware/software issues. It's hard for such a small team of people to test *every* scenario. It usually has to go out to the public before most things get ironed out. I remember getting my SuperSDSystem from Terraonion only for them to have to recall them since one of the capacitors were installed backwards.
@@SmaMan Well yeah, some very small issues usually with the Krikzz Everdrives. They've never had issues to this extent though. And the Super SD is a whole different can of worms as that thing was supremely flawed from the getgo. The video circuit was a complete mess, and those in the community even tried to help them fix it, but they copped an attitude and tried bashing the community that tried to help them. Ever since then TerraOnion has kind of had a bad rap with me personally, but I did still give them the benefit of the doubt and bought the Mega SD which is a quality product. The Super SD 3 is still flawed tho even today, they still haven't fixed all of the video circuit issues and they refuse to do so which is why I refuse to buy one.
@@bigwut123 No, not at all. I mean yeah they did a revision that fixed some of the issues, but some issues still remain, and they refused to do a 2nd revision. In fact Voultar still sells a RGB bypass mod for it that many ppl like to do. I'd recommend doing the mod to yours if you know how to solder. The remaining issues may be considered minor to some, but they are indeed present. For me I just refuse to buy one as I am not going to pay for a device that needs modwork to function properly when the thing already costs nearly 300 bucks. I don't like that you need to mod it to get a proper RGB signal out of it. Mistakes were clearly made, and they just plain didn't know how to design a proper RGB circuit. Voultar tried to help them and they copped an attitude. Not very smart on their part. Besides, I already have a nice working PC Engine Duo-R with an RGB mod, so I don't really need one of these anyway.
If you've ever used CHDman to convert bin cues to CHD, it is a good way to convert multi bin to single bin. If your multi bin is converted to CHD, when you click on convert CHD to bin cue, it will result with a single bin.
@@csukosd Do you know any HIDDEN GEMS?! I have this game for my pink Playstation 2 (which is HIDDEN GEEEEM) - it's called Call of Duty Big Red One - is it... hidden gem?
I just got the Mega Everdrive Pro and most of these issues have been fixed already. Multi-bin Sega CD images work, FM sound for SMS works, MSU-MD hacks available and nearly all MD+ hacks have been converted to MSU-MD, and menu now supports custom themes.
Joe threw the cartridge in the air and caught it three times in a row. That's the very definition of a professional. I tried doing that, and my hair got caught in the ceiling fan.
Just Wow , once the standard everdrive was released, i could,ve only hope that people would mode existing mega cd games in a compremised form to run trough that old everdrive, (by deviding those nega cd roms into sections of 4MB aka clusterchain format, while the CD audio could,ve bern mixed and converted to just 8bit pcm), sure having a mega everdrive save all the all such impractical needs for such hurdle, but still it would,ve been cool anyway and i still see lots of untapped potential in them.
It's nice that people have another option since many people just don't want to mess with Terraonion, but i think this new one from Krikzz could maybe use a bit more time baking in the oven so to speak. When you are already spending $200 on a product, going up another $60 doesn't seem like a big deal to get everything you want and working in good order. The file format stuff alone on the Mega Everdrive Pro would be an annoyance. With MegaSD also being available at StoneAgeGamer so you don't have to ship in from overseas, it seems like the best option still. Hopefully Krikzz can fix some things up in time for the holidays.
Don't think that file format shall become an issue. I am used to gluing CD images for POPStarter. Krikzz option is better for me as he has a shady online shop here in Ukraine. Delivered within couple of days with only 1-2$ for postage. Though I would invest in SNES cart now, as my cheapo Everdrive X3 is pretty sufficient for my sporadic SEGA gaming.
WTH was Krikzz thinking when he chose to support only single bin/cue format??? He has to already know the rips that are most likely going to be used with his product. Terraonion has way better file support with their products.
Krikzz decided to give the MEDP only 64 KB of ram & 256KB flash.. . MSD has 192 KB & 1 Mb flash. It may very well be there is not enough memory in the MEDP to store the file names of all the bins AND do everything else it needs to in RAM.
It's nice to know that the Mega SD plays audio CD images, I tend to use emulators on my phone to play music as those interfaces have a great bit of nostalgia for me.
Problem is the Everdrives seem to be available longer than these other flashcards and receive updates long after other flashcarts development seem to have died. Everdrives seem to be very basic in menus but I get these to play games, not spend time in the menus.
I was curious about these ROM carts for years. Now I know what to look for, like being able to load Sega CD games with multiple bins- which it seems like the vast ocean of roms out there are like. Thanks for showing these off. And entertaining me this Sunday morning. Keep up the good work out there, my brudda.
I have a 32 inch Sony Trinitron from 2006 that still works and looks great, so I am getting my fxpakpro in the mail soon to play on my snes via composite. The picture for games is the best I’ve seen without going higher quality cables
It's clear that the MEGASD is the better choice even at a higher price, and if I was going to get a real Genesis again, and not just emulation, it would be the one cart solution I'd have.
@@black.iczelion afaik at least someone correct if wrong but the Mega SD is an "fpga" based Sega CD motherboard. Basically it's a Sega CD in a Genesis cartridge so it's impressive none the less.
Great to see that aleast Game Sack hasn't been affected by this bloody lockdown, and I can get my fix of retro game news and reviews. PS you look very tired in the Skit at the end hope your Ok Joe.
imagine getting one of those, fill the sd card with every single MD and MS and NES game known to man, and sending it back in time to your younger self....that would be crazy , huh ?
I only recently got my Mega SD, I wasn't aware that Krikzz was working on an alternative. It's good that there's some competition in this space. Sounds like the Mega SD is the more mature product at the moment, which isn't surprising as it's been out for a good while longer. The Mega SD had plenty of minor issues that needed to be ironed out too when it first came out. Krikzz has got some catching up to do, but the Mega Everdrive Pro is looking very promising.
the MEDP does have some technical limitations it will have to overcome. Here's hoping KriKzz fixes them and doesn't just release a Mega Everdrive 2 or Mega Everdrive 3
I'm a big fan of Krikkzzzzizzzz (or whatever) and his work, but it would appear that he needs to step up his game. When I first saw the Mega SD, I thought "sweet. Kkkkzzzzr is sure to top it soon, as he is king of the flash carts." But I am surprised at how much better the SD seems than the ED Pro. I don't want my Genesis to play NES games with wierd colors and sounds or not at all. Just no thanks. I have an NES. It seems wierd to me that he would bother with that when there are already enough issues to work out with the Sega consoles. It's obnoxious that I would have to look for a specific repack of an image file, rather than just use any type. And why is the audio so much better on the SD? FM channel works and everything... I love my Everdrive MD. But it looks like I might upgrade to the SD over the Pro...
Wow.... After watching this vid, I am now strongly re-considering buying a Mega Everdrive Pro to replace my Mega SD. I think I'll hang on to my Mega SD after all.... Damn Krikzz, what happened man? You really dropped the ball on this one. This is what happens when you rush a product to market before it's truly ready. Thanks for bringing these issues to light Joe, much appreciated!
It's a great review but he doesn't get into he tech spec of the carts such as the power of the FPGA and the ram. Spoiler alert. It's not looking for the MEDP as it has 1/3 the ram of the Mega SD
The not being compatible with multiple bin files was almost a dealbreaker, but then I discovered a handy dandy tool called CD Mage that will let you collapse them into one single bin.
I might have to invest in one of these.. I did try throwing an SD card filled with ROMs at my mega drive but nothing happened. I don't really know what I expected to happen.. and now I can't find my SD card.
There is an utility called Binmerge that, as the name implies, merges various bin files in just one. It even generates another cue file matching the merged bin.
I’d still probably go with the MegaSD just for the ease of Sega CD games and compatibility. Very cool to see a new everdrive though and what they do with it
The MegaSD is a really great product. Unless you really need 100 save states or NES compatibility (which is cool!), I think the SD is with the $60 extra compared to the Everdrive pro.
@@NoshAbroad haha ya, i do want to get one with sega cd support because i had a power surge in my house and it burnt out part of the mobo where i had bypassed the fuse that is known to be faulty on the model 2s. Luckily i had another model 2 that had damage to the cd reading daughterboard so i swapped out mobos and it works but now i am all hella sketch that something might happen to this one so i keep it unplugged till i want to use it.
@@tuffasgong About 25 years ago when i was in HS my friend's home caught fire and burned down as a result of a Sega PSU being left plugged in while not in use. There was a very lengthy lawsuit and in the end Sega had to pay for the damages. However, later revisions of the Genesis manual say to unplug the Genesis after use as a result of the lawsuit.
Thank you for an unbiased review. Key notes for me personally. The bootup times ARE better with the Pro, and the cartridge is compact and natural. Though the Mega SD has game menu support with MCD games. And better cheat support for Pro-Action Replay.
Seems like Mega SD is the one I would get. Don't care for the NES support on Everdrive, although it is a very cool feature. You can however convert multi-bin CD images to single bin/cue very easily.
Do yourself a favour, avoid terraonion at all costs. And if you really need to, for whatever reason, order with a creditcard or paypal. Loads of quality issues with them, your package doesn't arrive or is broken or your order doesn't work? Well to bad, no money back or replacement even if you send it back. They even moved to a country to avoid having a decent warranty as well as lower taxes. Want to cancel your order even if they haven't send it yet, you can't. They screw over people that work for them and then play the victim when people ask to get payed for their work.
@@relo999 Wow... haven't heard of that but I have seen some recent drama with someone they work with on Twitter. I'd still probably take the chance and order one, though.
@@NirnBootMod Then at the very least order with creditcard or paypal. Promise me that. They have a long history of banning people from the regular channels you get information about them, like their forums, and wouldn't be surprised if they had some contract with reviewers that states "you can't criticize the company or no free sample" or something along those line. There are some more scummy shit they did in the past. All in all personally I will never order from them again as even before I ordered a SS3 from them (luckily the last revision as I waited a year, otherwise I had to do a 80 euro mod on it due to shitty audio and video work they did) and questioned their illegal, in the EU where they WERE based, TOS I got first shouted down and then banned. Eventually ordered one anyway. Since then they moved to Andorra, outside of the EU, where their shitty TOS is legal. (which is a fun story on it's own seeing as they moved during Mega SD pre-orders and didn't announce it or allowed people to cancel which made sure that people that already pre-ordered and where from the EU suddenly had to pay another 100 euro on top of the original price in import tax)
I get a much bigger kick out of collecting and playing the actual carts/discs, so these devices are not really for me. They do have some really cool features though & I totally understand how people would find them way more convenient. Thanks for another entertaining episode.
I'm pretty satisfied with the performance of my Mega SD, I have it coupled with the Mega SG and it's about as good as it gets. I wouldn't get too excited about the NES core on the MEP, MadLittlePixel showcased it on his channel live and it was very buggy, many games had bad glitches or wouldn't run at all. Hopefully some of the kinks with the MEP get worked out because it looks like a promising product, but as of now i'd give the edge to the MSD, even with it being a pricey device it gives you outstanding performance and options.
Thanks for taking a look at these! The idea of playing Sega CD games on a Genesis without a Sega CD is very appealing to me. Sega CDs are a pain in the ass to keep running these days and that is in stark contrast to the nearly bullet-proof core Genesis system.
after all this time, i just noticed the ascii turbo snes pad in the opening that you swapped with purple and lavender buttons. Nice. also I WANT THAT SHIRT.
Gamesack is my absolute favorite show for the classics, and Tim Rogers of Action Button Entertainment for the current releases. It’s a good time to be a game liker.
The only cool feature is the ability to play nes roms. I own the Mega Sd, less glitches, worth the price tag 🏷. Until Krikks patches everdrive pro, Mega Sd ftw
2:22 I LOVE Whip Rush!!! I thought I was the only one!! I think a lot of people are unaware of how to use the satellite weapons properly just judging from play videos I've seen
I’ve decided I’m actually going to save this episode for tomorrow and just put on an older console crunch episode to fall asleep to. See ya tomorrow guys. Goodnight 😴🌙
@@GameSackI mean, it doesn't claim to be anything else? So yeah xD It works great though, runs all the games I've thrown at it so far, no issues with it. Some downsides like you have to wait a few seconds for it to start a game it isn't as quick as the Everdrive pro or x5; it doesn't have support for additional chip stuff or anything- but it runs all the base sega genesis and master system games just fine without issue. So it works for my needs anyways.
@@sociallyresponsiblexenomor7608 I have one of those as well. Runs games just fine, which is what I use it for. Would I like a Pro or Mega SD? Sure, but sometimes you just can't beat stuff that does most of what the expensive product does, for 1/3 the price...
Man I will never forget the first time I saw sewer shark!!! I was absolutely blown away!!!! Still play it now and then...and hear metal munching monsters bearing six three six.... in my head almost constantly?? Is that normal?? Now shoot the tubes rat breath!!!
I was pretty disappointed with the support my Everdrive N8 got; that made the MegaSD a pretty easy choice. I've been super happy with it and I've used it a ton in the past few months.
Krikzz only manufactures them. It was designed by ikari_01 and the firmware is mostly his as well, with some contributions for special chip firmwares from redguy (SuperFX & SA-1), magno (S-DD1) and redacted173 (Super Game Boy 2).
Oh wow i didnt know the mega everdrive has save states. The market for complete genesis games has gotten way out of hand. Upwards of $150 for games that are readily available, so i decided at that price im better off getting an everdrive. With save state functionality, that adds even more value. Plus, there are a lot of games i want that are ridiculously expensive, such as truxton. Definitely going to get one, this info was very helpful. I have an everdrive 64 and i love it. Hopefully itll work on my mega sg, if not ive always wanted an original model 1 genesis and i already have controllers and a retro tink 5x so wont cost me too much more money.
