the tuning is absolutely spot on. I was surprised at the lack of fluctuation. That is actually really impressive. What a beautifully made snare drum.

Best drum product ever made! I've been playing since I was 10 (53 now) and always got a decent sound and was sought out for advice a lot, but really was winging it. I remember the torque wrench in the 80's which sucked, obviously. Always a challenge to get 2 kick drums to sound the same in my career. 5 minutes with one of these on a 10" tom blew my mind. My friend owns a studio and bought one as he is not a drummer. His little Yammy kit sounded like angels pissing in my ears so I went and got one. I tell everyone to just BUY one.

Good video. Very informative. I love my Drum Dial. Best investment I've EVER made in a drum accessory. Hate those S Hoops though. In my experience, they take too much crack out of rim shots...makes 'em sound dull and thuddy.

I have read that the way to get a crisp. clean sounding snare drum is to tension the snare head a little tighter than the batter head. This of course is what those of us who like our snare a little tighter as opposed to the "thud" or muddy sounding snare drums.
@DrumDial
@DrumDial 7 лет назад
Thank you for the excellent comment! You are partially correct. The snare head should be tuned to a higher "pitch" than the batter head (not tensioned higher). If you were to tighten a standard 3 mil to 5 mil snare head much past 85 on the DrumDial, the head would just stretch and eventually break at around 90. Most batter heads are tuned to 89-90 and higher. A thinner head will always have a much higher pitch than a thicker head tuned to the same tension. We recommend tuning the snare side head never tighter than 82. A 5 mil head tuned to 82 will still have a higher pitch than a 10 mil head tuned to 90.

That is amazing! I am confused about one little thing though…mathematically 2/3 off should be the same thing as 1/3 on. If it was 2/3 off and 1/3 off OR 1/3 on and 2/3 on I would understand, but I don't quite get it.
@DrumDial
@DrumDial 8 лет назад
+zyxw vut You are correct! That is confusing. I misspoke and should have said "off, 1/3 on, 2/3 on and full on" , as it is a 3 position throw off! Thank you for pointing that out.

I would love to hear this same same with die cast hoops, it has a great body and fundamental tone, but is lacking in the crack and pop that us hillbilly kido's love :) Could just be the recording style, but the few snares I've played with super hoops I have HATED those hoops. I want to try them on toms though where rim shots aren't important...
@DrumDial
@DrumDial 10 лет назад
Thanks Joshua! Die cast and a higher top head setting along with much tighter snare wire tension will give us that traditional "crack" and "pop" sound. The mic we used is built in on the camera, nothing special. We wanted lots of fundamental and a fatter sound for this drum. Lots of options! Had lots of fun tweaking the drum sound and trying different heads on this project!

It looks like the dial has a piece of metal that needs to go under the drum's hoop in order to get the tuning reading. It looks like an easy fit with the S hoop but what happens when the player is using a drum hoop that doesn't flange inward?
@DrumDial
@DrumDial 8 лет назад
+CR Excellent question! The edge gage will fit all drum hoops. The gage only needs to touch the inside edge of the hoop. The edge distance is 3/4" when measured with the edge gage.

Great video , but there's something i can't understand. In most of the snare drum tuning videos, it's said that the reso head must be tuned "very high," very "crancked up", "way higher" than the batter side head. But, in your video , snare side is tuned to "81" and batter side to "85"...! so, what's the point ?
@DrumDial
@DrumDial 2 года назад
A thin head tuned to the same tension as a thick head has a much higher pitch. If you tune the thin snare side head tighter than 84, the head will stretch! We tune the snare side head to a higher pitch than the batter. The thin snare side head tuned to 80-82 has a much higher pitch than a thicker top batter head tuned to 88-90. The videos that you mention are referring to the pitch not the tension.
@mpcvore
@mpcvore 2 года назад
@@DrumDial thank you for your quick answer... another question : how can you get a higher pitch with a lower tension ? considering that you put, for example, a coated Remo Ambassador on the batter side, an a clear Remo Ambassador on the reso side (same thickness for both heads, isn't it ?)
@DrumDial
@DrumDial 2 года назад
The bottom resonant snare side head is not an Ambassador. It is a thin remo snare head. The top batter is much thicker than the thin snare side.
@DrumDial

The top batter in this video is an Evans 360 12.5 mil thick head. The bottom head is a thin 4mil snare side head.

Hey guys, i have a Ludwig Black Beauty 14x8" and would like to get a nice fat sound, what do you think about tuning the batter around 250 hz and reso 380 hz ? and do you have some kind of sheet to determine the tension values you messure with your gauge from the frequencies? something like 250 hz => 85 on your drumdial? as well i d like to ask you for some values for a tt 12" and two floor toms 14"/16", for a nice smooth tuning interval (perfect fourths, should be good) What values can u refer? I recently purchased your drum dial, it s on it s way and i just wanted to ask that things, before it arrives. Sorry for my bad english i hope u understand me.
@DrumDial

For hz conversions to tension, it also depends on head thickness, diameter and depth to calculate. An 85 on a 14" would be different for a 12" . Very good numbers for what you are after are: 85 top batter 82 bottom resonant snare drum 12" 75 top batter 75 bottom resonant 14" 74 top batter 74 bottom resonant 16" 74 top batter 74 bottom resonant

The snare side head is much thinner. With a lower tension the snare side head will still have a much higher pitch than the thicker top batter.

ok, you have always responded quickly and with excellent advice.. my drums sound very good, and im getting comfortable with my drumdial... here is a twister.... i just got some Rata toms... 4 of them, all 6 inch single head, but with varying depth.... im trying to tune them all the same tension, and, while this works perfectly with different sized drums, it makes a weird sort of falling pitch on the rata toms... its musical, but not as musical as my toms, and frankly a bit off..... what is a good way to approach these little drums? thank you!
@jonathanreddish8590
@jonathanreddish8590 7 лет назад
also, what about tuning them to sort of match up to the next size, the 8 inch tom.... right now the 8 inch tom has the same pitch as the first rata tom, and so, rolling on down the line is not that great.... it would be cool if the falling pitches were cohesive.
@DrumDial
@DrumDial 7 лет назад
Tune all 4 , 6" toms to 78. Tune the 8" to 76. The 6" toms should only be a 1/4 step apart and the 8" an entire 3rd from the 1st tom in the set of 4.

I have a Drum Workshop Collector's Metal 6.5"x14" Smooth Brass Snare, do you recommend using the Drum Dial Bearing Edge Conditioner on a 3mm bell brass shell?
@DrumDial
@DrumDial 10 лет назад
Spencer Holmes, yes, the bearing edge conditioner makes tuning even easier on the bell brass shells. The bearing edge on this type of drum is slightly smoother than the bearing edge form on similar snare drums from DW. Tuning up to your desired tension using the bearing edge conditioner helps to make an extremely smooth transition without skipping or catching, especially at higher snare drum tensions.

DrumDial How are you getting that high of a lug frequency, especially with a coated head on (presumably) a 14" X (?) drum? What is the fundamental of the snare? I have tried a drum dial on res head, and it's not so easy with the snare beds. Still, I am thinking of getting one, because while my tuning is very precise, you are right about uneven tension while the drum being still in tune, but going out easily.
@DrumDial
@DrumDial 9 лет назад
wiremessiah We used a 10ml coated Evans head. That's the actual edge frequency and the fundamental for that top head ( bottom head dampened) would be about 1.5 times lower. See this link for proper snare tuning around the snare bed: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TuN6TT6FAWg.html, starts at 1:30 for the snare side. With both heads free, the final true fundamental was an A3.

@DrumDial
@DrumDial 8 лет назад
+Spoodermen Pls Yes, works great on marching drums. Marching snares: 96 top batter (for Kevlar heads, take the average reading, as the tuning tip will read between the weave). 80 bottom resonant (thicker Kevlar snare side heads can be tuned to 90 for a higher pitch) Tenors (and toms) 90 (very good starting point and the diameter will automatically determine the pitch). Bass drums 88 (for both heads).
