If you have never dehydrated spaghetti, or if you have been thinking about trying it, this video could change your life. Anyone can do this! It's EASY! You'll never eat Mountain House spaghetti again.....
Tried and true, one of my favorites! In this video I show how I make dehydrated spaghetti with meat sauce made from ground turkey and bread crumbs. I have been making my own dehydrated meals for quite a few years now, and I don't regret it. Some meals are better than others, but this one is fantastic. Using ground turkey and bread crumbs, the meat does not turn out like gravel. Always delicious, every time. It's easy to do, makes a lot and it's cost effective. You could feed a lot of people on one trip, or you can have spaghetti on the trail many times, just from making one batch. This batch was 8 pounds of spaghetti that dehydrated down to 1 pound 12 oz ! Dehydrated food also keeps for a very long time if stored properly. The benefits of dehydrating are many. The process works!
Do you dehydrate your own food? Are you thinking about trying it? Let me know what you think. If you have any questions, I'll do my best. Lets talk about it in the comment section. See you soon.
Thank you,
Justin

Literally dehydrating spaghetti with meat sauce right this moment. It's 1 am... I'm jonesing (is that a word?) to get in the woods.... Anyways, I'm doing this now, but just wanted to see someone else's process. Yours is slightly different than mine, but I will try it your way! Thank you!

I do the same thing, but with Chili. I never thought to use Ground Turkey...great idea! With ground beef I am sure to get the leanest available, then I cook it and break it down to very tiny bits. Once cooked, I strain it through a fine-mesh strainer and run hot water over it for several minutes to wash away as much fat as possible. Like you, I've eaten my dehydrated frozen chili a year later and lived to say it tasted exactly like day 1. I bought a vacuum sealer for $10 off Craigslist years ago and it comes in handy for backpacking my pre-made meals, snacks, and breakfast oats because you can add boiling water to the thicker bags no problem (BPA free bags). Thanks for sharing, I will DEFINITELY be doing this next trip.

I have a lot of them ! When I'm hiking I do the same thing, pour boiling water into a freezer bag. It works great !Thanks for watching.

Nice! But for Lows Lake you can just keep it hydrated! A short carry to lower dam from car, a short carry to put in above upper dam! This is good to know for backpacking though! I want to start doing this because I CANNOT eat those store bought backpacker meals and I DON'T want to be eating all that salt.
@ItsGoodintheWoods

When I went to Lows I was there for 9 days. It was nice having the dehydrated food. And it is delicious. I find it to be much better than those freeze dried meals with all the chemicals and salt. And much cheaper!
@twochordcool
@twochordcool Год назад
@@ItsGoodintheWoods That explains it...9 days...nice! Yes, I want to get into dehydrating particularly for 2 reasons: store bought backpacker meals are disgusting and unhealthy, and the logistics of bringing real food, especially for any trip longer than 3 or 4 days...it's almost impossible if all the water isn't dried out of all of that due to the weight.

@ItsGoodintheWoods
@ItsGoodintheWoods 2 года назад
In this video I was using silicon coated liners I had purchased specifically for dehydrating. They were cheap and I found them at Walmart. I have been using them for years now. But you can absolutely make your own from parchment paper. Parchment paper can withstand much higher temperatures than a dehydrator reaches. Dehydrated spaghetti is easy to do and the results are amazing. A real good place to start your dehydrating adventure. Let me know how it turns out

Nice presentation Chef Good In The Woods! If something tastes so good that it blows my taste buds right out of the water I don't mind having it for days. Case in point: I dehydrated a favorite chili that my wife makes and had it for 8 days straight. And it was over a year old stored in the freezer just like yours. I survived with no ill effects. I'm no cook and I see that you do a lot of guess work as far as ingredients. I'm going to give this a shot myself and will probably double the amount. You used a pound of turkey, how many meals did you get out of it? Side note: I'll be tackling the NFCT solo starting May 15. In the middle of food prep and logistics.

Dehydrated chili is delicious! That is another winner for sure. I am glad to hear you have had success with long term storage. I have yet to have dehydrated food spoil. I don't recall how many meals this made. I wish I had done a better job of detailing that. I think it made 3 or 4 good meals. Good luck to you on your hike!!!

I have never tried that, but I am sure it would work. People rehydrate meals by boiling water and pouring it in a bag with the contents all the time. You will want the water to be as hot as possible (preferably boiling) and it will take at least 20 minutes to do its thing. You have me curious, I am going to have to try this. Thank you

So...how do you determine how much dehydrated to put in each bag, for the number of people?
@ItsGoodintheWoods
@ItsGoodintheWoods 3 года назад
That is a really good question. You need to figure out how many people your batch of food will feed before you dehydrate it. Then once it is dehydrated, divide the weight by the same number of people I figured 8 lbs would be good for 5 hungry dudes. Or me for 5 nights.
