Flight EZY4912 from Split to Roma on thursday the 15th of August.
Just before surpassing V1, crew puts on full reverser, full brakes (as you can see with the smoke) and full airbrakes (spoilers). Roughly 500-600 meters later, the aircraft was fully stopped.
Security was called and Firetrucks were placed all around the 319.
Somebody inspected the gears from the runway few minutes, then the aircraft taxied to a stand far from the terminal gates (not an usual parking stand for a commercial flight).
The airliner couldn't take off and maybe needed a more detailled inspection before fly again. She spent the night at Split airport but pax were transfered into an other aircraft which especially came from MXP, at about 01:00 am (so more than 5 hours later).
It was very awesome to see this aborted take off for me, it was the first time I saw this and as you can see, the runway is very close !
PS: I was told that the take off was aborted due to a loud BANG crew heard while speeding up. They directly made the plane stop and they noticed that a tyre was damaged.
EDIT : Thanks to Mark Newton, who was inside, for the informations ! : pilots heard a loud bang due a tyre damages so they decided to stop the aircraft.

Great job from the crew to get the aircraft stopped in time. Aborting at speeds close to V1 is not an easy decision to make. Well done!
@Nummer378
@Nummer378 9 лет назад
+satos1 V1 is calculated so that the aircraft can stop safely without reversers before end of the runway. Speeds above V1 are critical, but less or equal are not a real problem. But you are right, it's not an easy decision considering that you have not much time to decide.

Surprising that they kept the reversers open all the way to the stop, and even afterwards. Not sure about the 319/20/21, but in general there is a low speed limit around 60kts for reversers, to avoid exhaust reingestion that can cause compressor stalls.
@theDoubleH63
@theDoubleH63 10 лет назад
Robert Courteau This is a 319 for sure ;) Yes pilots have to keep reversers off below 60kts but as it's a rejected takeoff for safety reasons they have to keep them on until the full stop of the aircraft :)

0:32. Was that the bang the pilots heard i wonder? The sound would of been delayed in reaching the filmer because of the rate it travels compared to light. Very well performed rejected take off. With the velocity of that braking I bet the passengers were eating the hair of the person sat in from of them lol
@amc3
@amc3 9 лет назад
Yes Adam, I think you were spot on. Captain decided "WTF?" = "RTO" within a matter of about half a second. He could have taken a potentially serious issue into the air, but instead used his experience and skills as a superb pilot to halt the aircraft on the ground. The very light fuel load would have made the decision much easier as well. Excellent flying skills.

The autobrakes system on the current Airbus family is very powerful, and cannot be overriddenduring an RTO by manual braking. It just wants to stop. Can't tell what caused it but I once aborted a takeoff for an AC generator trip, and we taxied back as well. Great catch.
@andyross37
@andyross37 11 лет назад
I wondered that too. So, I asked an actual A320 captain. His reply: Usually the airbus procedure for a RTO is to cancel the reverser once the aircraft has stopped. Everything is computer controlled so it might take a moment for them to close after the pilot moves the throttles to idle detent and resets the reverser switches.. A pilot might never perform a high speed takeoff during the course of his or her career, so these guys were probably thinking wtf!

I agree with you, on 0:28 there a small flash with the left hand engine, (looks like a fire) then the plane stops, therefore meaning the flash had something to do with the plane stop. the plane had not reached v1, meaning it was safer to abort the takeoff meaning the captain was right to stop the plane.
