I love how individually, these birds choose to sing in minor. It adds mystery to them, and it suits them especially when they start singing at 5 in the morning or whenever the sky starts to blue.

I have 2 of these that visit every single day. One eats mince out of my hand, and the other one sits on the table next to me and flings the mince around and eats the little bits first. They're such great singers and if one of them whistles near me, it's so loud I have to block my ears, very ear piercing sound. Gorgeous birds they are.

I've been searching for a particular bird call my whole life, and I have never been able to figure out what it is. I've always called the bird the "birthday bird" because when I was a kid and would wake up super early and excited on my birthday, I would hear it. While I'm not 100% convinced, I thiiiiink it might be the butcherbird.

I was once camping and driving across the outback of Cape York when I came upon a Pied Butcher bird singing up a storm from a dead tree in the middle of nowhere. Fantastic experience. About the only equivalent we have here in America would be our Mockingbirds. They are gorgeous singers too.

Great footage with clear sound. I believe pied butcherbirds are talented mimics and have witnessed them 'sampling' elements of other birds' calls and doing their own mixes. I believe there are other bird calls & parts of calls in this presentation. I was very lucky to watch one bird sit outside my window in gentle rain and go through a series of long renditions with several other bird calls mixed in, as though singing idly to itself. Thanks for posting.

Yes I have heard the same thing. I have a gaggle of them who get fed by me and they mimic calls from other birds. There is even one that lands on my hand and follows me around when Im on the ride on mower, collecting the insects and worms.

They are by far the best singing birds in Aus, especially the first 10 minutes of every day, at roughly 5:50am just before sunrise these birds produce the best 10 minutes of songbirding on the planet, then the rest of the time they sound like in this video. That first 10 minutes though is beyond amazing. 4:26 it's almost like that but it's still a bit different and better

That’s a different tune again! I’ve been noticing the different tunes of butcher birds between the Central Coast & Hornsby area birds. What an amazing bird. I need to look up the native song of the Lyre bird as I’ve only heard the imitated sounds, which is mind blowing how they can mimic power tools, people chatting & other household sounds, amazing.

Not that it excuses cutting down trees, but butcher birds have adapted very well to urban environments, and are common in the suburbs. I live in the inner suburbs of Brisbane (5 minutes from the CBD) and we have a large number of grey and pied butcher birds. They'll often come and sit within feet of me while I'm gardening. Took me a while to figure out who was singing in the middle of the night though, but it turns out these guys are my insomnia buddies. They start about 2am and go right until dawn. I wonder when they sleep!

I was so freaked out when I watched a scary movie and started hearing these 4 whistling notes in the morning and only after my husband left for work, there they'd be "doo...DOO...Doo...doo...." just like the beginning of the video, I'm so relieved it was these fellas and not the dead little girl who might be coming to kill me in seven days or something 😭 they can sound pretty paranormal if you've never heard them before!
