"There was 40 feet between them when they stopped to make their play, And the swiftness of the ranger is still talked about today." I get goosebumps every time i hear that part, this song is way too good.

And the next lines-what a perfect, original way to describe the event! "Texas Red had not cleared leather 'fore a bullet fairly ripped, And the Ranger's aim was deadly with the Big Iron on his hip." He sings it so quickly and so concisely that you can almost see it happen in slow motion! Nearly 3 minutes of buildup for a climax that takes only two lines to happen!

When you listen to Marty's story songs , you don't realize it but the guitar tells a lot of the story. Grady Martin played the guitar for Marty and he was genius at creating a background mood with his guitar.

Marty Robbins actually pioneered the use of guitar distortion quite by accident. It's in the song "Don't Worry" which is a song about a romance breakup. It's a masterpiece, and I consider it his greatest work. Do a reaction to it and I guarantee you that the commenters will tell you the story of the first fuzz-tone in recorded music!

@@webbtrekker534 There's some footage from his show, where he ribs the guitsteel player about it "I told you to get that fixed" Funny part: It was Robbins who insisted they keep it on the song. The producer hollered for a new amp and Marty wouldn't hear of it.

Big Iron was released in 1960. Televisions were pretty widespread by then and the number one genre was Westerns: Wyatt Earp, Bonanza, Laramie, Mavarick, Cheyenne, Have Gun Will Travel, Wagon Train, The Rifleman, Rawhide, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Death Valley Days. Am I leaving any out?

I'm almost 76 and I grew up on Radio and listened to many of those shows on Radio first. Gunsmoke, The Cisco Kid, Lone Ranger, Sky King, Red Ryder, Paladin, etc. We got our TV in 1953 and many of those show then began dual producing programs. Many of the Radio stars couldn't make the transition to TV though Duncun Renaldo did make the shift to TV with the Cisco Kid. (Trivia: Even though there was no color TV in those days the program was filmed in color.)

"You Gave Me a Mountain" by Marty Robbins was covered by Elvis Presley and is included in his "Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii" concert. It is one of the saddest songs ever written and is a magnificent performance. Several reactors have reacted to it. Warning that it might get you teared up. Beautiful and sad song. "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife" is almost as sad and beautiful. It was Marty's FOURTEENTH number one country single!

Bobby Sykes and Don Winters are the superb backing singers on most(all?) of Marty's classic hits. There are some live performances on You Tube if you want to see them. For storytelling your need to check out the two other songs from the El Paso Trilogy. Three superb songs from the same story! I love El Paso, of course, but listen to the other two just as much, and with as much awe at the music/craft/voice/storytelling. Feleena is about the woman of the story, and El Paso City is, well, I'll let you find out, but unique and unexpected, while still being in the same vein. Sort of. The concept, Marty's voice, and the subtle harmonies of Bobby and Don snever fail to give me goosebumps. Do check them both out in due course! The live version of El Paso City is great for seeing the three work together vocally, but the 70s clothes are a bit distracting, so suggest you listen to the studio version first!

My grandfather and my father were both blacksmiths. As a child I heard the words of this song as "with pig iron on his hip.... Pig iron, pig iron, pig iron on his hip".

A perfect story song...one of Marty's best! Some people have used old Clint Eastwood clips to make a video/movie of this - fairly good also 🙂😂

I know a ballad that is a good match for this one, about a poker game played in the Old West : “Ballad of Weaverville” by Kate Wolf. It’s sung beautifully and is a fine story !

In my mind (or to my way of thinking), Marty Robbins wasn't a singer, e was a Balladeer-- the man who told the story behind the songs and legends. One of my favorites is "Mr. Shorty", kind of a cross song/ballad. Also, his 20th Century Drifter album is full of great, Marty Robbins classics that joins two centuries of living, explains a lot of his (at the time) current life. He died too young and the world was deprived of more of his imagination and talent, both with guitar and vocals.
