Amazing Wyoming: Independence Rock, the Register of the Desert

One of my travels this summer took me to Independence Rock, a beacon on the Oregon Trail, the Mormon Trail, the California Trail, and the Pony Express. The landmark is quite impressive, and vistors can still climb the rock to this day and see inscriptions from countless travelers from the 1800s.
In this video I explain the significance of Independence Rock, climb to the top, and show a good number of the inscriptions from 140+ years ago.
If you are planning a trip through central Wyoming, you'll want to stop and see the magnificence of Independence Rock for yourself.

Splendid photography of this unique National and Western treasure, which remains immortalized; almost exactly as it was when the Pioneers when through. I traveled the old road too, long ago and each visit now is nostalgic as well as beautiful. I hope those precious signatures last forever, protected. Good job.

Yeah, for me it was quite surprising to just be driving down the road and see this in what is essentially the middle of a prairie.

Hi Allen, thanks for taking the time to film this and share it. Very interesting place and history. Loved the opening shot of the steam engine, was that taken nearby as well? Its interesting to hear your pronounciation of the word "route", for the context of a trail in British English it would be prounced like "root" but in the context of a cutter for shaping wood (or metal) then we would use the same letters and pronounce the same as you do!! Good luck from Spain!! PS I bet your grandson loved this vist, the little monkey climbing up the rock!!

He enjoyed it quite a bit. Truth be told, the filming for this was done over three visits this summer, and he was only on one of those visits. (Independence rock is about 4-5 hours from our home, depending on driving conditions.) I also have footage of him running DOWN the rock, which is generally a mistake because of the angle of the surface. Gravity helped him hit the ground faster than he wanted. With my old legs, I have to be more careful!

Thanks Allen… I remember many years ago (summer of 2003) on my way from California to Milwaukee, I rode past that landmark but did not stop. Now you made me sorry for that omission. Had I known its history and significance I would have for sure. Now I know for next time. 😊

That's the problem with so many historic landmarks -- they are too easy to pass by, without knowing their significance. I hope you are able to stop in the future.
