That opening is for power cable from outside. In certain camps they supply you with a power cable that has power outlet at the end and you can use it to power up your electronics
It can hold 4 people for sure. I personally go for a bigger tent than I need (3 person for 2 people) as it gives extra room for gear, spare clothes, etc.
